Hi

I don't seem to find a Hexagram Table (with the trigrams on the x, y axis) here at onlineclarity.co.uk to be able to see which hexagram I've received, if we're using coins for instance. Is there one? Otherwise, it means going elsewhere to see what hexagram I have and then coming back.

Maybe someone else can help you out with that, Livingdaylight (great name, btw!), meanwhile I recommend memorizing the hexagram table. It's not that hard to do and you'll find it's a great help for maintaining your focus when doing a reading to not have to look things up. Plus it's very handy to know for when you want to consult the I Ching sometime when you don't have the book or a computer. Start by drawing the hexagram grid and fill in all the hexagrams you do know. You probably already know all the double hexagrams like 1,2, 29,30, 51,52, 57,58. Then 63 and 64 are easy to remember. Then fill in any others you recognize. Now you have given your brain something to build on and if you make a point of learning a couple every day you'll have it all locked in pretty quickly.
I understand that back in the olden days I Ching students had to have the whole book memorized before they were allowed to even begin to try divination! Yikes!

Yikes! indeed...
I remember doing the 12 x 12 timetables in grid format at school ( a long time ago )

No, I don't already know all the double hexagrams. Could be a good exercise for the brain. And you memorize the numbers too, so that you know the number of each hexagram?

thank you :bows:

Yes, memorize the numbers, but I think it's most helpful to approach memorizing the hexagrams in groups of their lower trigrams. The lower trigram is about the realm of man, earthly life, the upper trigram is the messages coming in from the higher mind, the spiritual realm.

For example, first memorize all the hexagrams that have Heaven, 3 solid lines, as the bottom trigram thus: 1,9,14,26,43,5,34,11. In this fashion you will start to get a feel for what Heaven as the lower trigram means:

1. Heaven below and Heaven above = Sky following Sky, Day following Day, one day after another without end. Life goes on. Therefore the advice with this image is for the superior man to make himself strong and untiring.

9, Heaven below and wind above = sky with a puff of wind blowing about, not much the bit of wind can do to change the sky, maybe make a pretty cloud. Thus the superior man only refines the outward aspect of his nature.

14. Heaven below and Fire above = Sky with a beautiful Sun! Everything comes out in the open when the sun is shinning. You might take this to mean God sees everything so when he gets this hexagram the superior man knows to "curb evil and further the good."

26. Heaven below and Mountain above = Sky with a Mountain creating a barrier, a boundary. You can only take in so much, put some boarders some boundaries some structure to all you've been exposed to - before going further the superior man acquaints himself with many sayings of antiquity (and memorizes the I Ching?)

43. Heaven below and Lake above = Sky with a Lake full of water? This suggests a cloudburst! To avoid a similar cloudburst, the superior man doesn't hoard his wealth but distributes it.

5. Heaven below and water above = Sky with a rain cloud up there, but unlike 43 it's not yet ready to fall. The superior man waits and enjoys life while waiting.

34. Heaven below and Thunder above = Sky with thunder crashing about? Pretty intense, lot of energy running loose, the superior man doesn't do anything unusual at a time like this!

11. Heaven below and Earth above = Other planets up in the sky. The superior man looks at the planets above and recognizes the signs. As above, so below. He uses this knowledge (astrology?) to create Peace.
...

If you study the hexagrams in this way you will start to see the pattern in them and get an instinct for what they mean and not have to rely on an outside interpretation.
