This may be as fundamental as any question can be but I cannot find an answer.

In the 8 Trigrams all of which are solid and unchangeing in the original form, and the same applying to the 64 developed Hexagrams from these 8 Trigrams.
I am making a presumption here.

There are standerized intepertations for all the Hexagrams with unchangeing lines.

How did the process of the line values 6,7,8,9, for a coin toss develope? If the Yarrow sticks were used to give these number values and to create a method of altering the Original Hexagrams so we can make indepth readings, Which came first, the creation of the Hexagrams and Trigrans in their pure form or were they devined initally by the use of the Yarrow Sticks, declared pure Trigrams and then as the Hexagrams develope the need for changeing lines came into focus?

I base this question on the premis of western pragmatic thinking and the fact that numbers have a meaning in and of them self. If this inquiry is to vague or lacks a fundemental soundness please attribute it to a nieve soul in a learning mode.

uh, I really can't answer this question, however, speaking about numbers and divination, I found very interesting Marie Louise Von Franz's
"On Divination and Synchronicity: The Psychology of Meaningful Chance"
