How can evil lines produce a good change?

Hello,
I've wondered this for awhile. How can a hex with unfavorable changing lines produce a positive result? If you follow the bad lines and 'there will be evil', shouldn't that lead to a negative change? Is the idea to follow the changes, or to refrain and thereby bring about a positive change?

For example, hex 60.2.3.4 (limitation) has several unfavorable lines. The result, 49 (revolution) is favorable. How do I proceed? Avoid the first two lines and follow 60.4?

In another example, hex 1.5.6 changes into a highly favorably hex. But while 1.5 is highly favorable, 1.6 is a disaster. How should one respond to these contradictions?

Thank you for your insights.

One thing I have learnt on this forum is that the relating hexagram does not necessarily represent the evolution of the changing lines. Check this blog entry and this post out.

is there any evil line at all?

As long as I can recall, the word "evil" is not present in any changing line. We can find some demons :D, although they are not really that in the end.

I know the issue is about the relation between first hexagram, the lines and the second hexagram; but I wanted to point the other issue: in my experience, it's good to get rid as much as possible of western moral concepts when reading the Yi Jing.

Hi all:). Good question Devi. And, how funny this question came up here... I just asked about the transformed hex on my new thread I just posted... I have noticed that it often seems to reflect my current situation. Or, my recent past that ended me up in the mess in the first place:eek:. Hmmm...

Ok, I've read the transformed hex can be the background, but the list under the post link is much more comprehnsive. Great resource! That explains a lot... Thanks Cris:hug:

And Riurik has a good point... But I get what you are asking, and was just wondering the same thing myself. How about an auspicious line vs. inauspicious? You get a very auspicious line and a transformed hex like 39 or 44, not auspicious. That seems like more Yi-ish phrasing, right?

Thanks

Thank you Cris for the useful links, and to everyone who responded.

It's useful to think of the "changing into" hex as "relating". I've always thought of it as where the energy was going, and paid close attention to it.

So tonight I was contemplating emailing a man I was seeing until a nasty fight 12/31st. I've been sad about the split, and its my birthday tomorrow. Would like to get together, despite his shocking unpleasantness 3 weeks ago. I'm on the fence.

I threw After Completion changing/relating to Turning Point. Not clear what the lines were saying, I asked again...should I contact him? And got The Abysmal changing into Turning Point (Return).

Clearly I'm at a Turning Point. :) Not quite sure if that means I'll be over the guy soon or if the impasse with turn around.

I'm looking at 63.3.5 to 24, and 29.1.2.4 to 24. Throwing 29 is what lead to the fight in the first place... I decided to plunge in and speak my mind, and he got pretty mad about it. Still, it seems to me these hears are saying that its over, to stay/return would be dangerous, and I need to move on. Darn. What do you think?
