Hi all,I belong to an ethnic minority, am from a low socio-economic background and have been working hard to make things better for my own offspring - I'm lucky to have made friends with generous people and have at times lived with well off family members that have donated money, clothing, food etc over the years and taken us on many holidays and outings. However, I'm trying to make it on my own and have been studying towards a degree, while taking whatever work I can in between. I asked "How can I break through the glass ceiling?" and Yi's answer, 22.2 to 26.Beauty > Great Taming. One changing line 2 = Making your hair beautiful??My hair is kinda messy, bushy and wild - so I'm wondering if this is a metaphor of some sort. When at work or needing to make a good impression I straighten or style my hair...but I'm hoping there is more to Yi's answer than this.Thoughts anyone else?

Hi MeltingPot247,

"How can I break through the glass ceiling?"
22.2 to 26 ~ Adopt (22) your boss's style (line 2, your boss is in line 3) and follow them through the glass ceiling into the upper trigram of great success (26).

First, big props to you for making the sacrifices necessary to go to school, in addition to holding down work, too ~ that's impressive by anybody!

So, the text talks about styling one's beard (or hair, more generally) as a "mini-me" of your boss's style ~ if your boss is clean-shaven, then so are you; or, if your boss puts her hair up at work, then so do you.

The idea is that you blend-in as a new member of a posse (management) following and supporting a successful person (the boss) ~ so that their success is your success, too.

At some point, your school work will result in enough credentialing, or a degree, that it will open the doors for you to professional employment ~ marking the transition from hourly pay with no benefits, to a salaried position with benefits.

When that time comes, the Yi is saying, be ready to look the part, and follow your way through to great success.

Good Luck!

Here is a different set of words for you to wrestle with -
Hex 22 tells a story around how to create the change you want to see. You have to put a different spin on how you see things and how you act. How you feel inside kind of reflects what is going on in the world around you.
Line 2 - The line of how you walk in the world. Make small changes to bring about the person you want to become and how you would like others to see you. Be clear and focus. You are in this change cycle for the long term.
Hex 26 - As you begin to see what produces results you will become clearer about what you need to do. What you put in you will get out, and the more you put in to the new you the more you will see that things will untangle themselves for you.

Good Luck

Thank you both. Definitely sounds like I need to invest more time in personal/self development, whereas this year I was or have been experimenting in relationship with others. I am reminded of a few biblical verses Philippians 4:11-13 and Ecclesiastes 3:1-13, in terms of lessons I personally feel I need to learn.

How can I break through the glass ceiling?" and Yi's answer, 22.2 to 26

HEX 22: GRACE > HEX 26: THE TAMING POWER OF THE GREAT

HEX 22: GRACE (KEN-The Standing Still Mountain above LI-The Clinging Fire)

GRACE is by definition (Dictionary.com)
1. simple elegance or refinement of movement
2. (In the Christian belief) the free and unmerited favor of God, as manifested in the salvation of sinners and the bestowal of blessings.

Grace is beauty in form that is transient and fleeting if it stands alone or if it is all that defines you. Yet in these moments there is an opportunity to present oneself in such away to draw attention to oneself. Since Grace is fleeting one must be prepared substantiate the form with knowledge, ability, and awareness. I always think of Grace as the opportunity or moment that you capture the attention of the right people. When you are working so hard to break through that glass ceiling, how you show up, present yourself, interact with people above, below, and around you is important. It is about composure, professionalism, and presence. At first glance you must captivate the audience. This can be at social functions, parties, conventions...always on your best and best behavior.

Grace is fleeting and transient because it is not enough to satisfy. Think about an actress or actor. They can look good and show up and perhaps make a movie but to have real staying power there must be something that grounds them in the trade of acting. It is not enough to just look good.

It also takes both parts: GRACE and KNOWING YOUR JOB. I can speak from experience. I am a geoscientist and in 2018 it still is dominated by men and the boys club. I have often been either the only woman in the room or one of the few. It is not about good looks but that works too. Good looks must come through in the right way. In fact I have found that enthusiasm, confidence, and intelligence goes way further than good looks alone.

Race is an interesting affect in the oil and gas business. You do not find many African Americans women as scientists in this business but you do find alot of Nigerian/African women scientists in this business. Again, just as with gender the same applies, enthusiasm, confidence, and intelligence is what it takes.

Another thing to remember is to LISTEN especially if you experience yourself as having to breakthrough a glass ceiling that is implemented by gender or race. If you do not know something learn as much as you can = enthusiasm and seek out the knowledgeable = taking initiative and demonstrating that you love what you do.

GRACE is like enthusiasm and confidence. It is attracting the right people who you can support by bringing value to their business and who can support you by creating opportunity for you. It goes both ways.

Line 2:(Wilhelm)
Six in the second place means:
Lends grace to the beard on his chin.

This is perfect. Remember that ornament alone does not guarantee credibility or respect. The beard is a "superfluous ornament" (Wilhelm). It stands out, it is on the face so it is not easy to ignore, it is too much... similarly speaking so do low cut dresses, large breasts that are overly accentuated, skirts too short, flirtatious behavior... not only does it distract but it come across as vain.

The lesson to take from here is that be stylish, unique without drawing attention from the attributes that truly provide value to your position. Just like composure what you wear is equally important. It is not the brand as much as it is does it represent the position you are in, is it appropriate for your job, is it respectful to you and the brand you are creating for yourself.

Remember vanity is about insecurity. When one is vain it means that you are constantly comparing yourself to other people. You must be focused on your vision or goals with out being arrogant. Be a genuine human being that is focused on being the best at what she does and properly represents the company.

HEX 26: THE TAMING POWER OF THE GREAT (KEN-The Standing Still Mountain above CHIEN-The Creative Heaven)

Here the power of Heaven (CHIEN) is being restrained by Keeping Still (KEN) causing Heaven to held firm by Mountain. Three fold meaning holding firm (Wilhelm):
1. holding together
2. holding back
3. caring for and nourishing

All three apply to how you conduct yourself once GRACE has brought you to stage front.
1. Hold Together by stay composed and do not allow yourself to be easily distracted or disrupted
2. Hold Back from speaking or acting too soon in any situation, wait and listen first before speaking or acting.
3. Care For and Nourishing remember to take care of yourself both professionally and personally because only you know what you need and when.. no one else does

THE JUDGEMENT (Wilhelm)
The Taming Power of the Great.
Perseverance furthers.
Not eating at home brings good fortune.
It furthers one to cross the great water.

"Not eating at home brings good fortune." means you get to go out there and make money n the world not staying at home. "It furthers one to cross the great water." is taking the chance.

Store up your creative power through daily self-renewal through courses, talks, lunches with co-workers. This will allow you to remain sharp and continue to grow. Your personality, how you come across, your consideration, awareness, knowledge, your ability to play with others well etc will drive your credibility and respect.

THE IMAGE (Wilhelm)
Heaven with in the mountain:
The image of the TAMING POWER OF THE GREAT,
Thus the superior man acquaints himself with many saying of antiquity
Ad many deeds of the past,
In order to strengthen his character thereby.

Heaven in the mountain... treasure, gold, a dragon guarding the dwarves' wealth (Hobbit). Find a female mentor who is not threatened and would enjoy watching you grow. You can learn from her mistakes and she is a great resource that you can seek advice.

THERE IS NO LUCK ABOUT IT .. KEY POINTS:
1. Attracting the right people
2. Be the best "Total Package" you can be
3. Work hard and be considerate, polite, and present
4. Educate yourself via anything that will broaden your knowledge in your field
5. Find a female/race equivalent mentor who can support you in your vision and developing your brand
6. Leave vanity at the door --- in fact dump it like a cheating boyfriend because vanity WILL BETRAY YOU
7. Most Importantly HAVE FUN!

Thank you Sylvia1Ching - everything you wrote I connected with. I'm taking a break from my degree at the end of the year which is a necessity as it falls under the 'helping profession' category which has brought up a lot of childhood/young adolescent trauma stories during the course of my study. My new role will also involve dealing with my past and hopefully healing in a physical/practical way. I will be trained by a mentor within a Feminist organisation which pretty much has links to the Me Too movement and involves teaching young girls and women about safety issues etc. One challenge I have had, is finding clothes that cover all the areas of me that need to be covered, but I will be working towards that, getting rid of clothes that don't fit and watching what I eat, drink. Looking forward to being more active once study wraps up for the year :)

You are amazing. Everything comes of its own time. It sounds like you are doing all the right things. I hope that I could outline the main points because it is just those points that get you there. XOXO Sylvia
