Some context:
Recently, in a dream it came to mind that I was incarnated on Earth to learn free will, and bring this knowledge back to my people elsewhere in exchange for service rendered here. It was a dramatic dream narrative--not something I take literally--but it speaks to a feeling that I have not yet really learned to set boundaries, or act proactively in the world. It's a shadow aspect of my psyche coming forward, and a part of me is unfulfilled as a constructive participant in life.

So, this free will topic was floating around the edge of my mind this evening, and when I noticed it I thought to sit down and try to better understand what was going on by posing this question. I'm having trouble with my interpretation and would appreciate any insight.

My sense of the answer:
I'll start with the second hexagram 18 because it seems more straightforward. It seems to point out that the feeling that I don't exercise my will comes from an old learned behavior. Perhaps the root of it is in past experience that needs to be uncovered, and nourished. I should lean into the feeling, and see what associated memories resurface. It also asks for action--kind of denying the premise of my question. It even flips my feeling of lack of will as a negative thing back on me, showing that it's a behavior/pattern that served me in the past.

Hexagram 36 seems to point out something like: in order to learn how to act with free will, you first need to learn how to protect your inner light. And that there is a necessity to what feels like a struggle I have to deal with. Maybe hexagram 36 is directly saying I am entirely in the dark about the nature of this situation, or that I'm not really lacking agency in the way I think I am.

The changing lines are quite difficult to get at. Line 6 is almost saying to fail to learn this lesson will lead to my figurative death. Line 2 is perhaps a scenario with real setbacks, but in which I am able to recover and move forward. Is the left thigh a significant image? In line 1, flying away might have something to do with other people not understanding me, and a need to retreat to a different perspective to make progress.

Conclusion:
My thinking on this is pretty muddled, and the answer seems to point this out. Should I pursue new questions, and if so does the reading point me in any direction here? Or is the answer quite straightforward in imploring me to take action inwardly, learning to protect the source of my free will before learning to act on it. I would really appreciate any thoughts on this, thanks!

Hello,
Do you ask this question for a specific 36-18 situation that looks like a struggle? Because in a situation that does not suit you, you always have the choice to let go with your free will. Do you question your relationship to the world in general? Your relationship with others? To a person? Are you looking for your way to express a talent or a project?

Hi Matali,
The question was in relation to the world in general--my relationship with myself, others, and with fulfilling projects in the world. I left it very open both in wording and intent, and I think that's coming back to me with the many changing lines. My sense is that the situation and ordeal to get through described in hex 18 is internal to me rather than external, something underneath the surface.

OK, first of all, everything you say is very right but since I don't know what you're basing yourself on, it's obviously very difficult to be concrete to help you... What I perceive in 36-18 and your question of free will is a need to "cleanse" what bothers you, what troubles you (18). With 36 you feel the need to hide your light. Line 36.2 shows an injury but also the strength of a horse to avoid being injured I think: do you have a good friend or wise advice from someone who can really help you in your quest?

Thank you so much, that's really incisive and without knowing me a surprisingly clear observation.
