Today I asked the i ching two questions that are wrong in so many regards. To start with, they go against the sensible recommendation of not asking about other people's feelings or intentions. And also the questions are probably part of the (temporary) process of torturing myself with this kind of questioning after my recent breakup with someone.

The questions are:

How does he perceive me? Which is a not so bad question, now I think of it. And the cast was:

Hex. 42.2.4. 6>58

And then, the question I've been avoiding to ask so badly (but then when you repress yourself, you create a conflict, so I just let it go to be able to start thinking about something else), which was:

Does he love me? And got:

He. 44.3 >6

This last question seems to indicate that there is pain and exhaustion involved. Maybe he feels tempted by me sometimes, but doesn't consider me for a long term commitment. Maybe he is feeling sad about our breaking up but he will get over it easily. Or, if it refers to me, it might indicate that having a relationship with him would be dangerous, so it's a good job that this is not a possibility anymore. Not really sure about what I'm saying, but I like to try, at least.

As for the precious cast, (Hex. 42.2.4. 6>58), I don't have a clue of what can it mean… it's difficult enough to interpret the castings when the questions are about my own thinking, never mind when it's about someone else. The only thing I've been able to grasp is that he maybe sees me as a good influence? Any ideas, anyone? Thank you so much in advance :).

Hi misswasabi,

I think your readings are good. Here's how I see them ~

"How does he perceive me?"
42.2.4.6 to 58 ~ He liked you a lot (.2) and was willing to sacrifice for you (.4) but the breakup was a wake-up (.6) and now he's okay with moving on (58).

"Does he love me?"
44.3 to 6 ~ A further encounter could be awkward, possibly ending in dispute.

So, a summary of the situation might be: The magic is gone, not to be recaptured.

He'll be okay, and so will you, if you'll both just move on.

I hope this helps!

thanks a lot for your reply... I'll have to think about it, because it doesn't resonate a lot with me and how things were. Somehow it seems like the cast refers more to my perception of things than to him: I liked him a lot (.2) and was willing to sacrifice for him(.4) but I had to breakup because I woke-up (.6) (but I'm finding it hard to move on... :) Maybe, as some have pointed out many times, the chi would only speak about oneself, (no matter if we keep on asking about other people's feelings). Or maybe he felt the same way about us, who knows.Well... I guess I find it hard to choose the right question, one that wouldn't leave me even more confused. (Eventually, I will learn) :)

Thanks for your reply back, misswasabi.

You know, there’s more than one way to read these casts ~ how about this:

Since the changing lines are all the even lines, suggesting true Yin, then ~

42.2.4.6 to 58 ~ Increase true Yin in order to find true Joy.

In Taoist alchemy, it is said that awareness has two states ~ the pre-celestial and the post-celestial.
Pre-celestial awareness is the sage’s mind of Tao,
and post-celestial awareness is ordinary ego, the human mentality.

The mind of Tao is composed of true Yang (Heaven) and true Yin (Earth);
while the human mentality is made up of false yang (Fire) and false yin (Water).

True Yang is Effortless Action, and true Yin is Stillness;
while false yang is self-interested action, and false yin is avoidance/oblivion.

So, in alchemical terms ~ purely talking about your own self-awareness ~ the Yi could be encouraging you to take-up a practice that transforms the post-celestial false yin of avoidance/oblivion back into the pre-celestial true Yin of Stillness, which then leads to the Joy with no opposite.

If this reading resonates with you, then you may want to take-up a practice of meditation, and see if it increases the true Yin enough to find Contented Stillness, inside and out?

However…

44.3 to 6 ~ If you get too strong, it will cause conflict.

So, where avoidance was before, let there be firmness now ~ presence ~ without being overly rigid.

The tragic flaw of avoidance is that it decisively rules out finding the Truth of things as they are. This reading, however, suggests that there is a better Way…

I hope this helps, and all best!

Good night, radiofreewill. I am truly amazed with this reading; it's something completely new to me, but definitely resonates with me a lot. It's funny because lately I've been thinking on how much I need to focus on myself rather than keep on analysing what the others do or feel. And just yesterday I thought that I'd love to practice meditation in order to focus on what should matter to me and stop avoiding it. "where avoidance was before, let there be firmness now ~ presence ~ without being overly rigid."; that's a great piece of advice.
But yes, I find it very interesting that interpretation bonded to taoism. Can you reccomend a reading about the subject? sounds really fascinating. As for the link to changing lines, I don't seem to have acces to the content. Well, anyway. Big, big thanks for taking the time to help me with my readings :).

You're welcome, misswasabi ~ I'm glad the second reading resonated with you! It turns out that the one place where 'things as they are' ~ the Truth of your direct experience ~ can be found is the present moment; which when found is called the sage-like mind of Tao. Ego, or the human mentality, on the other hand, as a self-interested interpretation of your direct experience, is always one-step removed from the present. One of those steps away from the present moment is Avoidance, and the other is Reactivity ~ both are suffering. Together, Avoidance and Reactivity make-up the two sides of the ego coin. Luckily, they can be straightforwardly aligned, stood-up and set *rolling* along with the Way ~ once you 'see' them at work ~ through a practice of present moment awareness, such as sitting meditation. So, I hope you'll be able to find a good meditation group to sit with ~ it really is true that when you are peaceful, balanced and harmonious yourself, then the whole world becomes that Way, too. I can highly recommend William Horden's short book, "The Spiritual Basis of Good Fortune": http://a.co/9umDffa It uses the Trigrams of the i-Ching as a model for self-cultivation and includes good exercises. As spiritual alchemy goes, his book is easy to read, and easy to put into practice. I hope this helps. Thanks again and all best!
