How is 26 the opposite of 45?

If I am remembering correctly, the opposite of a hexagram is the one you get by changing each yin into yang and viceversa?

I got 41.1.2.4.5.6 -> 45 as a response to a question. And, since there are 5 lines changing I thought that I should read the only one that doesn't change, which is 41.3 (maybe that's not correct either).
Anyway, following this line of thought, I thought "How is this different from getting 41 with only changing line 3?" and of course the main difference is the resulting hexagram, which would have been 26.
And then I thought that it was interesting that 26 is the opposite of 45 (I think).
Hence my question.

45 deals with devotion to another/others - its celebration etc. etc - shares space with 12.

12 confirms belief through a competitive approach, 45 is more cooperative (congregating/assembly etc)

26 deals with devotion to self in the form of a collective, or even individual, holding firm to 'traditional' or 'tried and true' perspectives - the warning being on not letting those traditions take over and lead. 26 shares space with 11.

11 is mediating, focused on harmonising/balancing unconditionally - 26 does this conditionally.

The skeletal form of 45 is described by analogy to 25 - a generic focus on standing up to assert 'something' ;-)

The skeletal form of 26 is described by analogy to 46 - gets into generic issues of entanglement with something, more 'commited' to a particular perspective etc.

BTW trigram characteristics:

26 with/from perseverence(singlemindedness) comes discernment. (we block X in favour of Y)

45 with/from devotion comes intensity in expression (joy etc)

Thank you, Chris. I always find your explanations very interesting, even if they are sometimes difficult to understand. But these posts are pretty clear and enlightening.

Another aspect of this is that 26 is heaven within the mountain, and the treasure is within. 26 builds and accumulates on the inside until the pressure can no longer be held. 45 builds on the outside so that it keeps growing larger. 26 is great force within held in check by the mountain, 45 is receptiveness within resulting in joyousness without.

Thank you Gene.
Interesting, so 26 is more directed inward which ties up with being about devotion to self and 45 is directed outward, more like devotion to others.
What they have in common is that they are about devotion and about accumulating?

Hi Lightangel

The trigram kun, 3 broken lines denotes devotion. The trigram chien, 3 unbroken lines denotes force, (among other things of course.) 26 is about accumulating that force so that it can be properly channelled. This is done in internal alchemy by raising the level of chi within the dan tien (naval area approximately). When the chi is superfluous it breaks out into the channels and meridians. Since it is all couped up and has nowhere to go, it finally overpowers its surroundings, like putting too much oil in the engine. Eventually it has to find a way out. In hexagram 45 it has already spilled out and is increasing outwardly. In 26 the fourth and fifth lines are like two pigs in a pen that are growing fatter and stronger and eventually break down the walls. It is like an outwardly expanding force. In forty five the force moves inward and gathers around the center. Here instead of energy moving out from the center, it is moved into the center, whereby, eventually, the center becomes larger and larger. This is done in internal alchemy by a person being receptive to the forces of the universe. In 26 the energies are trapped within. In forty five they are free to expand as they are coaxed within. Receptiveness leads to joyousness. Also, a receptive mind is also a reflective mind. The I Ching pairs so many things in so many ways it is often difficult to get the deeper meaning of how they are opposites. But the secret is eventually to reconcile the opposites into one unified whole, and hints about how to do that are given in hexagram 38.

That's right, there are so many pairings it's difficult to keep up with them.
Unified whole... hex 38...
something to think about.
