My brother-in-law, Paul, and his family live in Naples, Florida where the hurricane is. They have evacuated and now I am asking how their house will survive the storm.
I got hexagram 26.1.2.3 - hexagram 23.

26.1.2.3 Seem to be about doing everything one can to protect the house.

23. Splitting Apart - I hope this refers to their evacuating or that the whole situation is about things splitting apart and not specifically their house.

Seems to me to be saying that despite their doing all the things one knows to do - boarding up the windows etc. - there is still damage. Or it could be saying - if we take the second hexagram to mean the surrounding circumstances and not the outcome - that in this crisis situation (23) they have done all they can do (26.1.2.3) and the house will be alright.

26's Image says, "A noble one uses the many annals of ancient words and past deeds..." Has the house been through anything like this in the past?

I don't think so but I know they have a friend who went through a hurricane a few years back so they are very aware of what needs to be done. They have left the area for now so we are not in touch. I'll update when I hear anything.

Hi Rosada

I think the advice seems to be saying to ride it out and see, hexagram 26 line 3 I believe is reflecting the way a hurricane behaves , constantly changing and unpredictable, i hope hexagram 23 is not reflecting damage as you say. However there maybe damage but that doesnt mean the house is flattened either.

Also as you say hexagram 23 could reflect a hurricane, I have an aunt in Florida she decided to stay, lets hope it turns out ok. The other thing is line 2 is to me saying that there is not a whole lot to be done and line 1 is a pretty clear warning of danger.

Update -

My brother-in-law Paul and his family boarded up the house and went 15 miles inland to wait out the storm at his grandson's house. They returned to Naples yesterday and found that fortunately only one shingle had been torn off their roof and a couple of small trees had been knocked over. (Over 10,000 tress were ripped up in the county!) But now no power and no water. A neighbor left out some trash cans which were ravaged by bears! (Bears? In Naples?!) So all in all very fortunate.

Looking at the I Ching hexagrams with this hindsight I first noticed that in WikiWing Hilary points out that 26 can represent moving out of the way of a natural disaster. (Mountain over Heaven - Head for the high hills!) The first two change lines seem to refer to problems but 26.3 seems to infer that if one stays on top of the problems they needn't lead to disaster. So perhaps this is a reference to Paul's having carefully maintained the property over the years and his boarding up windows before leaving. Perhaps I'll get a chance sometime to question him more closely and see what his take is on them is. Anyway, I come away from this experience with 26 now having an emphasis for me on the importance of "crossing the great water" - getting away from danger.

I originally assumed 23. Splitting Apart was a dire omen and getting it in relation to Hurricane Irma was downright scary. However even though the end result was bad - no power, no water - the house was not destroyed, so I am going to revise my opinion of 23. I note that Hilary commented Splitting Apart can mean shedding like shedding an old skin and the roof did shed one shingle!

Over all I would say this answer was mirroring more the whole experience - having to split and head for the high hills - than just the house. Also, if I were to now interpret the reading I would say the I Ching told me, "In a time when things are Splitting Apart, it is Wise Advice to do what you know to do to maintain the property and then get out of the danger."

I do hope 26.1 is not some warning about unseen damage - like water damage to the foundation or mold or something weird. If so I'll update. But all in all I think the house survived with minimal shedding. Thank you all for your considering this situation!

Or 26.2. :( I hope not. As you say, though, 26.3 is also in the reading. Maybe the first two lines lead up to it. His alertness to dangers large and small?

Hilary said somewhere that in readings with multiple moving lines, if certain ones seem to go together, you can group them and look at their combined zhi gua. 26.1.2 changes to 52, stillness/stability, which obviously sounds like what one would want...

Thank you, Liselle. I hadn't been aware of the combining lines technique.

Good to hear your family are safe as is the house and I've found these sorts of things do teach us so much about the IChing. I've a friend whose son is over there at present doing an exchange life guard stint - he is also safe and everything's ok.

Hi Rosada

I believe hexagram 26.1 was a warning to get out of there of which they did.
I assume my Aunt is ok, no news is good news in these situations.
Napels was one of the worst hit areas so they have done well. So maybe hexagram 23 did represent the hurricane itself. What do you think hexagram 23 represented?

Hilary writes in wikiwing that 23. means stripping away and also skinning with an emphasis on discarding the past. I wish I knew how to post pictures. Paul sent me one of the house covered with downed tree limbs. I think these tree limbs were old and ready to be skinned off the trees and also Paul will now have to peel them off his roof and house. But the thing I get from this is that 23. is NOT an omen of violence, but rather a natural process. So the branches fell but they didn't harm the house, they will just have to be stripped away. Also some screens around their patio were stripped away - blew off. To sum this up I would say 23. means out with the old to make room for the new.
