How often do you cast?

I've been thinking about the subjectivity of the iChing. One thing I've noticed since joining here and learning more about iChing practice is that the length of time that people apply to their readings seems to be very subjective. That extreme example of that lady (can't remember her name) posting reading after reading (I think about 16 of them!) about a relationship situation springs to mind. Other people get a reading about an ongoing situation, but then cast the next day and when they get conflicting answers seem to get confused. But to me, if the situation is still ongoing and static, there isn't much point in asking again until the situation changes.

I know there is the calendaric divination that Jesed kindly showed me in a previous post that I did, and for that one reading I am trying to follow the advice of the reading and the time frame indicated. I therefore won't be asking that same question until the time frame has expired (or maybe not at all).

For readings that don't have a calendaric component to them however, how long do you all apply the answers that you get? Again, subjectivity comes in to this for me - it's a number of weeks since I got my hex 2 reading and I am still carrying its lessons with me. However, a few days ago I got hex 9 for a reading and it 'feels' like I'm almost done with that hex for now.

So what do you think? Are there guidelines for how often to cast or do you just go with your intuition and let go of the reading when you feel ready?

I'd be really interested to hear about your practice :)

Hi Applegirl,

I follow more my intuition than a certain plan. It depends on the situation and the initial question. Sometimes I found the question not well posed or I see new things evolving or I seek for additional information so I ask again in a short period.
Sometimes because of the situation I have to wait.

For example, some days ago, thinking about a event I wanted to participate, I had a strange feeling, not something bad just a weird gut and I wanted to “explore” it. So, I asked Yi about that event regarding a specific issue and got 23.6 >2. Maybe something will happen then (I had that instinct- thought that I should participate). Don’t know what that would be but when and if … I have two choices and I’m prepared what may happen if I choose A or B.

..... - it's a number of weeks since I got my hex 2 reading and I am still carrying its lessons with me. However, a few days ago I got hex 9 for a reading and it 'feels' like I'm almost done with that hex for now.

I’m not sure what do you mean with this ,but I recall some time ago, I was asking each day “what should I know for today”. I got some shocking answers , different hexagrams each time, but what was interesting , imo, I saw Yi telling me a story. Like reading a novel and each hex/chapter was going the story a bit further. That continuity made me think that different hexagrams were working together towards something.

From here, I see hex 9 closely related with 2. Like 2 is the big plan and 9 the way to achieve it, the small details. (just my impression, don't want to confuse you)

EDIT : I recall asking the same open question , receiving for two weeks in a row the same answer, like Yi says “ Don’t be in a hurry. We haven’t finished with that reading”, lol. So maybe by “finish” you feel like cleary understand what was 2 about and you can move to the next step .

For me it's run in cycles, reading often or seldom. Obviously the more time someone has on their hands, the more likely they are to introspect, and Yi's the perfect companion for that reflection. And when life enlists you to run around, doing, who has time for asking Yi?

Timelines: time specific readings and methods notwithstanding, that's to be determined according to context/specifics. Are we asking about an immediate situation or a change of life? And how many times does someone receive an answer with a big "Ah Ha", only to realize later that the reading had yet to fully unfold at the time of the Ah Ha? Ah Ha Ha!

For me it is also purely according to intuition. Some readings stay with me for a long time, but usually they were about something big to begin with. Can be something which happens, but more often a big inner question. I got 2 more than a year ago, and I still live with that answer. It has no 'time', it is rather something I had to know, and I still have to know and remember.

Very often I ask about something what it actually IS. So it is not a question about what to do, just about insight. And that has no expiration date.

When I ask what I can best do in an immediate situation, the answer can last as short as the next 5 minutes.

To me, every answer has its own time. From minutes up to a lifetime.

Thanks for the replies, they're so interesting!

That's an interesting one Maria because in that case you're controlling the time frame - I did a couple of readings like that but didn't get into the habit of doing daily readings.

Yes I think I would say the same, for me the hex 2 resonated very deeply, maybe by the time I got hex 9 then it was more like I'd got the message of 2 and 9 was about the details.

For me it's run in cycles, reading often or seldom. Obviously the more time someone has on their hands, the more likely they are to introspect, and Yi's the perfect companion for that reflection. And when life enlists you to run around, doing, who has time for asking Yi?

Meng you're very wise :bows:. I sometimes go back over readings and it's like as you describe, I would have got the Ah Ha, but then looking back over the readings there is the added knowledge of hindsight so one learns further depths to the reading. That's why I try to make some notes at the time of the reading.

Thanks for that LiSe, it's a validation of my own intuition on this - it's a feeling that I get, definitely. I could stay away from the iChing for well over a week or even 2, but when I get a call to cast the coins it comes upon me very strongly and I just go with it. I then 'carry' the reading with me until such time as I feel ready to let it go.

Thanks again

I also ask that kinds of questions. When things or feelings are not clear most of the times I found helpful those answers. And of course , as you said, those readings are the ones I carry a long time with me.

Neither did I. I stoped doing this after a short time. It didn't "fit" to me

Daily readings are too much for me, too. Weekly readings are a perfect fit. That doesn't mean that when I ask 'what to be aware of this week?' I should always cease to be aware of it on the stroke of midnight the following Sunday. It's more of an ongoing syllabus kind of thing.

almost redundant after all those anwers and insights what i have to say: any situation to unfold is depending on your question, you know, that collapsing wavefront. But neither is it totally subjective, because you are also resonating with the whole universe. any of your projections is also part of universe, you move it, your are intelligent, it moves you, it is intelligent and alive. It is not a matter of subjectivity or objectivity, think about Heisenberg and leave those cartesian dichotomies.
It is as Lisa said, a minut and a lifetime, perhaps lifetimes. depending on question and reading.
My reading for today: 33. I think that's good for me indeed and not give in to this addictive crarity forum, have to organize myself first before I run like an elefant in china.

Thanks for all the answers! It is really down to intuition I think. I also find that the daily readings are sometimes too 'big' to just apply for that day. They can be that profound that they have a longer time frame. I might start doing the weekly readings and see how that goes.

Jilt I love your explanation and your inclusion of Heisenberg in it, you speak my language :).
