Not if you're standing under one :D

Maybe, at this stage, you can have a go at sharing your own interpretation of this hex and line. What do you think it's showing you?

Hi there!

Well...I think that it is obviously about enthusiasm. So to show willingness in any activity undertaken and to make things happen rather than just wait! So to drum up lots of energy. Line two seems to speak of treating everyone with the same respect?

40 is about the resolution of something, a danger (obstacle being removed) be forgiving? I don't really understand the significance of the 'southwest' does this mean travel?

I guess it is saying take back control, be enthusiastic, put energy into anything needing doing and do it well and be friendly and everything will work out fine. Maybe an invitation will arrive also!:)

It can be all the above, sure. But I think the importance and emphasis in general is placed on how we utilise the energy of enthusiasm, hence the big differences in the lines. I think Wilhelm in this case has a pretty good take on it, at least when I look back at my own experiences of this line:

This describes a person who does not allow himself to be misled by any
illusions. While others are letting themselves be dazzled by enthusiasm, he
recognizes with perfect clarity the first signs of the time. Thus he neither
flatters those above nor neglects those beneath him; he is as firm as a rock.
When the first sign of discord appears, he knows the right moment for
withdrawing and does not delay even for a day. Perseverance in such conduct
will bring good fortune.

So, enthusiasm is also knowing how to SEE the signs so we don't waste that energy. It is about not letting all that boundless energy get frittered away on illusions that we harbour inside and which often manifest outside.

Stephen Karcher talks about not letting that lead to rigidity but to be self-reliant and open. LiSe's summary is good as well:

Keep your heart safe, but open it when the moment asks for openness. It is good to have a strong defense against influences so you can lock out the bad ones. But listen to your intuition to tell you when to open the door so the good ones can come in.

So, imo, I think it's really a line about managing your enthusiasm so that it doesn't lead you or others into problems. Being flexible but disciplined. Bit of a balancing act until you can really let your enthusiasm manifest safely. Patience, perseverance and an objective / intuitive understanding of all the elements involved will get you there.
