I've struggled with my weight for a long time. Over the last year, I've actually made a lot of progress (often using varieties of intermittent fasting), but I'm still not where I need to be, and when I look at myself in a mirror, I'm super frustrated. All that effort, and I'm only here?

How do I get rid of this belly?!
36.1.2.3 Brightness Hidden > 7 The Army
.1: "Darkening of the light during flight. He lowers his wings. The superior man does not eat for three days on his wanderings. But he has somewhere to go. The host has occasion to gossip about him.
.2: "Darkening of the light injures him in the left thigh. He gives aid with the strength of a horse. Good fortune.
.3: "Darkening of the light during the hunt in the south. Their great leader is captured. One must not expect perseverance too soon.

So, taking this very concretely, I see this as: continue the fasting, and maybe even increase it ("does not eat for three days"). Build up strength (perhaps through weight lifting??). And then a bit of encouragement -- I've actually made a lot of progress, but I've got to be more patient ("one must not expect perseverance too soon").

Your thoughts?

Hi Liquidity

36 means being an outcast; 7 means grieving

So there may be a wider picure thing going on here. Something connected with you being wrapped up in a cocoon of feeling great loss and the way through it is through coming to terms with possible aspects of being rejected or ostracized by your social group. Sometimes 'big bellies' remain, or return, as a form of protection and only dininish as the old wound is healing or that we become able to protect ourselves in other ways. As the new form of protection grows, the gossip of the old hosts is not so powerful a draw, we gain the strength to counter the old wounds (we can move towards plan B ) and of course to implement Plan B or to shut down the gossip cannot always be accomplished speedily, or as fast as we would like it. Hence we need to revisit and reorganise our forces. Three steps forward (light) two steps back(dark) is still a nett gain even if for a while youhave hidden your brightness.

Weight loss requires the two pronged approach with respect to our physical activity ( reducing intake, increasing output) and aligning our internal thoughts and feelings. When the light shines on the inside then it is easier for the external to follow suit, Even though you seem to be having a time of struggle at the moment it's clear from what you have said in your post that you are still walking the path.

Good Luck

i think i remember you from the thread about Yi giving more direct answer to the question in the resulting hexagram (apologies if i'm wrong) and i'm wondering if maybe that's the case here? 36 can be just pointing to where you currently find yourself (1, 2 and 3 describing stages of your doubts - until the leader gets captured) and to get out of this situation you have to bring back the strong leader (who already managed to do so much great work thusfar! :)).

another, maybe a little too far out idea i have, if the paired hex 8 is "associate", then maybe 7 here can also mean disassociate, as in, disassociate from what you feel is troubling you regarding you weight (and focus on getting strong by actually increasing the mass - as the resulting hexagram may suggest)?

and lastly, this is probably how i would read it to myself based on the lines of the army: 1 - go about the exercise in proper order. 2 - set the right frequency. 3 - don’t try too much at once. 4 - when you feel like giving up - you can. sometimes it’s ok. be kind to yourself. 5 - set goals. but again - be forgiving and kind to yourself. 6 - the victory is in keeping it up?

Great points. You're right that the psychological is... key :)

I wasn't the person from that other thread, but these are insightful thoughts anyway. I'm also just starting to learn a new sport, and perhaps that may be what 7 is indicating -- a physical, social activity.

Hi liquidity I feel your point re the weight loss journey and there’s definitely a lot of truth in the psychology aspect of the belly and protection and what we are holding onto.
Apart from that the things that have helped me are nightly doses of probiotics as they help to breakdown your fats properly and the huge result for me has its also stopped my gingivitis.... gut health I believe is a huge key to weight loss.
I also drink a protein shake almost daily called Natures Way Figure Shaping Protein.
I also go to the gym at least 3 times a week but it’s very mild excercise
no over the top weight lifting etc. the thing with exercise in any form is it helps you mentally and emotionally as well. You may already know that.
I never fast (except from wine 🍷 haha) because I love food!!

Fasting for days (36.1) is harmful to you (36.2). There is a cause for not losing the weight and you'll accidentally find it out, and there's no quick solution (36.3). Resulting 7 also means doctor, so in my opinion there's a medical underlying issue.

Huh, that’s a very thought-provoking take on the reading! Thanks.

Hey liquidity!

Something struck me about 36>7 when thinking about my own approach to this sort of thing. After winter I will typically do something like a Whole30 that helps me reset and feel good by only eating simple whole foods for 30 days (with the goal obviously to continue this after the 30 but have a healthier relationship with indulgences). I like the organized, straightforward rules and timeframe. And what I've found really works for me is keeping this to myself, which makes me think of 36. Everyone is different, but I've found outer accountability or public accountability horrible and demotivating. I get organized (7?) internally. I think about my personal why and then I think about how. What is the plan? What are the rules? I personally like a healthy amount of rules. It frees my mind up from analysis paralysis. And then I don't talk about it to my friends or coworkers or family. And that removes all self-imposed pressure and allows me to stay focused within.

Doing this also makes you naturally have to dodge some social scenarios and/or find some resolve while you're in them. Cutting way back on drinking and lowering sugar and carbs can feel a whole lot like 36 when you're out to dinner with your friends who are indulging in wine and loaves of bread. It can be easier to just stay home sometimes as your willpower grows. Maybe the line isn't talking about fasting altogether. Maybe it's talking about fasting from whatever it is others are serving you... on your "wanderings." Donuts at the office? Pasta night at a friend's house? Quietly decline and maybe they'll have "reason to gossip."

Finally, without going into the lines, I will just say that I am a woman and weight lifting has completely changed my body for the better. I'll never give it up. If you aren't doing it, I would very seriously consider it. Your body will begin changing shape very quickly and you will grow leaner just from having more muscle. IF can be less effective for women. I don't do well with it unless I'm naturally not hungry. Be careful with that.

Good luck to you!

I apologize for interfering. I can tell you by my example. In one year, I lost 25 kg. I stopped eating fast food, sodas and salty foods. And also I began to drink a lot of water and walk every day for at least 3 kilometers. Never give up. You will succeed!

The first reaction I had was also to see 36.1 like Diamanda, that it isn't telling you to fast more, but that fasting is counter-productive. It's the first line of the reading, which can represent what you've been doing in the recent past, not necessarily what you ought to do.

If you read it like a continuous story, it might go like this, "Liquidity's been fasting (36.1), which injures her (first part of 36.2). She needs the strength of a horse" etc.

It makes sense to me that "strength of a horse" might mean weight-lifting. (But you'll probably need cardio along with it, or so says things I've read.)

The last couple phrases: "Their great leader is captured. One must not expect perseverance too soon." I think this is encouraging - you've made progress, you're just not done yet. That's okay. Not being done doesn't mean you've failed, it just means you're not done. (And yes, Yi can see you've been working on this for a long time and still chirp that it's "too soon"... 😩)

Thanks for the interesting thoughts! The more I think about this, the more I think the 7 indicates my new sport, because that is what seems to be driving my fitness -- and also eating better generally. But it certainly dovetails with what you're talking about, because talking about my diet isn't the focus anymore. It's just being done quietly...

Yup, I think the strength of a horse and the 7 refer to my new sport, and fasting isn't nearly as compatible with it, because it deprives me of too much energy... so your interpretation makes sense in that context.

More thoughts...
7.The Army can be about defending and strengthening areas that need clearer, firmer boundaries to protect you from invading thoughts that might discourage your resolution.
36. Darkening of The Light may be counseling you to protect yourself from negative input, both from people that discourage your diet ("Oh, you don't need to lose an ounce!") and also from any other area of your life that is confrontational,
In other words...

(36/7) Avoid Stress!
