Hi,
A client that I've done a lot of freelance editing work over the years is advertising for a full-time position that would involve overseeing the freelance editors as well as other editorial duties. I really like the publisher; however, working for them would involve a 2-hour commute each way. So I asked should I asked: Should I apply for this job? 6.5.6 --> 40

I thought 'fair enough'--be aware going after the shiny object.

Then I ask how life would be for me if I were to get this job? And I got 25.2.4.5.6 --> 19 (Disentangling, Nearing) This one kind of perplexes me--things start off well, but eventually not to my liking? Does anyone have any insight they can share?

Many thanks!

Well... personally, I can't imagine how a 2-hour commute each way is doable at all on any kind of permanent basis. But you're not rejecting it out of hand. Would you be able to move closer if you get the job?

I don't have terribly clear ideas about the readings. You might have to mentally re-write your question for the first one, since Yi isn't really set up to say just yes or no.

40 as the relating hexagram... it says this (quoting Hilary's book):

'Release.
Fruitful in the west and south.
With no place to go,
To turn round and come back is good fortune.
With a direction to go,
Daybreak, good fortune.'

Any chance it could mean that you feel like here's an opportunity in front of you, so of course you have to pursue it? That's what the last two phrases are about: if you have a direction to go, set out right away, at daybreak. Don't lose any time.

I can understand that, but since it's the relating hexagram it's probably not advice. It's usually a feeling or belief or context, how you're relating to things.

Also there's more to it - it more suggests you figure out if the direction will work. Maybe in this case, if you can figure out how to solve the commuting problem, then go ahead and apply. But if you can't, then...

They might even ask you that in an interview. "How on earth would you manage this?" You'll have to have a good answer - as you said, demonstrate that you're aware of the problems. "I'll suck it up and power through because I really want this job!" might not convince them...

Maybe that's part of hexagram 6, line 5 especially. Maybe it means have a good argument with yourself. "Arguing: good fortune from the source" - good fortune will result if you get to the heart of this, really contend with it. Maybe pretend you're on the witness stand, being interrogated by someone who throws every possible objection in your face.

Second reading - I really don't know. 25 is about disentangling; 19 is drawing very close and paying a great deal of attention. They seem quite dissimilar. The only thing I can think of is... in order to make a decision like this, it does seem like you'd have to examine it closely. Maybe 25 and 19 are kind of a picture frame for the reading: "You're still too detached from this, Compass. Draw closer. What do you think your life would be like?"

That seems to fit with the first reading - really contend with it. As you said, don't just think about the shiny prize.

But that's not a direct answer to your question, and I have no idea about the lines.
