I am quite new to the I Ching but am finding it quite helpful already, though I am not at all confident about my interpretations as yet.

I have a question about asking time related questions.

Clearly if we ask something like 'When would be the best time...' etc., we could interpret the answer as relating to when a set of conditions or emotional states etc. come into play, but somebody has told me that there is a system that links the Hexagrams to a calendar that allows one to tie the Oracles answers to time-based questions to specific times/seasons/months etc.

I have used Google in an attempt to find more information about this, but haven't really come up with anything.

Have I been told something inaccurate, or does anybody know anything about such a system? To me, such a concept doesn't seem quite in keeping with the ethos of the I Chine.

Thanks!

There are numerous ways to answer questions of time.

I agree. The Yi is best used for perspective and insight rather than matters of fact.

Hi Bloke,

I think there are people already did the 60 Hexagrams for 12 months, and to make it easier for you let us put it here.

The Chinese people used 60 Hexagrams for 60 Gua Qi to create Chinese calendar.

They use four main Hexagrams as 29 坎 (kǎn), 51 震 (zhèn), 30 離 (lí), 58 is use for 4 main seasons.

Hexagram 29 坎 (kǎn) is the mid winter when water is strongest. (Keep in mind thousands of years ago they use month 11th is the starting month of the year, which “heaven first creates water”, and by calculation that the first day of the creation of this world Heaven was starting at Yang Wood Mouse of the year, month, day, and hour).

Hexagram 51 震 (zhèn) is the mid spring when wood is strongest.

Hexagram 30 離 (lí) is the mid summer when fire is strongest.

Hexagram 58 渙 (huàn) is the mid fall when metal is strongest.

Starting with Hexagram 61 中孚 – Trung Phu (zhōng fú) "Center Returning", "inner truth", and ending with Hexagram 27 頤 – Di (yí), (providing nourishment)", “resting”. They used 中孚 (zhōng fú), "Center Returning", "inner truth" as Yang Qi (energy) of the universe is beginning at Trung Phu (zhōng fú), and Yand Wood Mouse of 6.7 days begin from there. They use the meaning of Trung Phu zhōng fú) "Center Returning" to start and Di (yí), (providing nourishment)", “resting” ending 365 days of the year. The other 58 Hexagrams were also created by meaning.

However, for practial use, most School of I Ching use Hexagrams 24 Phục (fù), Hexagram 44 Cấu (gòu) as Winter and Summer to divide Yin and Yang Qi of the 4 Seasons, 12 months or Times of Night and Day. Some use Hexagram 11 and 12 as Spring and Autumn to divide yin and Yang Qi of the 4 Seasons, 12 months or Times of Night and Day.

Sixty Hexagrams of 12 months as follow:

11. . . . . . . . 61, 24,
12. 3, 15, 38, 46, 19,
01. 62, 4, 42, 53, 11
02. 5, 17, 35, 40, 34
03. 16, 6, 18, 49, 43
04. 56, 7, 8, 9, 1
05. 14, 37, 48, 31, 44
06. 50, 55, 59, 10, 33
07. 46, 60, 13, 41, 12,
08. 57, 45, 26, 22, 20
09. 54, 25, 36, 47, 23
10. 52, 63, 21, 28, 2
11. 64, 39, 27

There are also 12 months that created from the 2 Hexagrams of Heaven and Earth from the Pre-Heaven Trigrams as following:

☷ ☷ ☷ ☷ ☳ ☱ ☰
☷ ☳ ☱ ☰ ☰ ☰ ☰
=> 11 12 1 - 2 - 3 - 4

From Hexagram 2 changing 6 times become Hexagram 1, first 6 months end.

☰ ☰ ☰ ☰ ☴ ☶ ☷
☰ ☴ ☶ ☷ ☷ ☷ ☷
=> 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9 10

From Hexagram 1 changing 6 times become Hexagram 2, last 6 months end.

I hope this would help.

Anybody want to learn more about Lunar calendar should go to this site:

http://www.informatik.uni-leipzig.de/~duc/amlich/calrules_en.html

I forget to mention that the author and the Vietnam Country made mistake on some accounts of the different of Chinese and Vietnamese calendar.

For example, in 2007, the Vietnamese New Year started on February 17 and the Chinese New Year started on February 18. The Vietnamese argued that because of New Moon phase of the Vietnamese calendar start at 11:14 PM on the 17th, while Chinese New Moon phase start at 12:14 on the 18th. However, they forget that the Zodiac of Beijing the sun in the South on February 17 is at 12:34 PM, while the sun in the South of Hanoi on that day is at 12:00 PM. Not only that, they forgot we were using Lunar calendar, and Lunar calendar the first hour of the day is starting at 11:00 PM of the 17th, which then would be the 18th of the next day. On the other hand, if they said we could not do that because it is not at 12:00 yet, then they should turn back the Beijing hour to 11:40 PM of the 17th because of the Zodiac hour is 34 minutes late. Either way, the whole Vietnam was using the wrong date for the whole year. This should have created wrong prediction for millions of people on that year. What a mess.

I happened to know the different so I used the Chinese calendar on that year. My followers and some other people who knew on their own did the same. The rest of the other Vietnamese people used the wrong date and even the month (if it is on the last day of the month), and especially those who lived in Vietnam at the time. If that is not enough, they celebrate the New Year on a wrong day, too. That is sad.

How would I know they were wrong in 2007? In conjunction with the reason already pointed out, I did several I Ching Numerology Oracles, and saw the meaning would have different results and the date it should happen. From practical results, I definitely knew this author and the rest of the other authors in Vietnam and the Vietnamese governments were wrong.

Well, to make it short, that is the different between a researcher and a practitioner.

Hexagrams as a calendar, and fortune-telling methods such as Plum Blossom, are examples of the “Symbol and Number School.” They have many adherents, but as you mentioned, this is not everyone’s ethos of the I Ching. A more general way to do things might be to ask, “what can I expect from doing this now, as opposed to next month?” Or, “what should I wait for before taking this action?”

Water On earth, you have hexagram 46 in months 12 and 07. The 46 in month 07 should be changed to 32.

Pocossin,

Thank you for catching that. You are corret.

However, I never use that in my prediction. I only use the 5 Elements of Actual Natural Seasons and Months for my own prediction. The reason for this is because the study of calendar is different from the study of 5 Elements.

Hi Water on Earth

I'm very impressed with your method and I was wondering if you can give me a clear interpretation of Hexagram 16. I asked if someone I haven't seen or heard from for about a month misses me and got Hexagram 16. He would tell me I made him feel 16 with all my enthusiasm when we were together?

I also asked if this person wanted to contact me again and received Hexagram 36 lines 1, 3 and 5 turning into Hexagram 8. BTW this person was very disrespectful towards me and I let them know it and that in order to continue being friends they had to stop doing something that was damaging to my self-worth and values.

Any imput from everyone is greatly welcomed as well! Cheers!
