This question followed on from one yesterday which asked 'what am I not aware of?' and part of it was defining what I'm doing. So this one follows....'what must I do?'

And it seems a vague question but I'm thinking of parts in my life that seem seperate but maybe I hope are not as things seem to change together. I'm doing new things at this voluntary work I do with new people. We seem to be being able to forge some kind of alliance between us and we are working in a place where there are lots of creative things going on and we are trying to get people to work together & communicate more. But it's really new and I'm afraid too. And I'm literally moving too, out of somewhere secure to somewhere almost dangerous. It's not exactly my choice but I know why it happened and hopefully it's temporary.

Anyway I don't know if I'm meant to copy and paste the response or just put the hexagram number?

The question was...What must I do? and Yi's answer, is 48.1.2.4.6 to 13.

I love the idea of getting other peoples ideas about this so if anyone has any thoughts! Specifically the transforming lines as I haven't quite got the hang of which ones I got on here! Xx:)

I love that I got the well by the way as I was thinking about that image yesterday when looking at this website and thinking how often its come up recently for me....and thinking about how to let things go and pass and still have a centre of some kind of stillness and permanence...

I'm also relatively new to this message board, so I hope I'm replying in an appropriate manner!

(For your reference, I'm using this translation: http://deoxy.org/iching And I'm not sure how other, more experienced people rank this translation... But I've been doing a lot of readings with it lately and having really cool results, so for now I'm just rollin' with it!)

First, to me the entire reading really seems focused on working to benefit humanity/ society/ the community. Does that sound like the voluntary work you're doing? If not, it may be answering "what must I do?" about some other area of your life where that is more of your focus.

I feel drawn to the phrase "a man may fail in his education to penetrate to the real roots of humanity and remain fixed in convention- a partial education of this sort is as bad as none- or he may suddenly collapse and neglect his self-development."

Is there any area of education/ self-development (whether left incomplete or never started in the first place) that would help you in your contribution to society more?

Next, the phrase "the superior man organizes human society, so that, as in a plant organism, its parts co-operate for the benefit of the whole."

It sounds like you were noticing that this "organism" you're involved with is really beginning to take form and work together! If there's still some room to grow, this hexagram might be encouraging you to take on a leadership role in establishing more organization there.

Line 1) Don't discount/ discredit yourself.
Line 2) Don't neglect your good qualities – utilize them!
Line 4) If the part about self-development/ education struck a chord with you, and you find you need to get your own ducks in a row first on that, then you might not yet be of use to the others, but it will be worth it in the long run, when you can implement those skills.
Line 6) I think it's saying not to fear the "well" running dry when you give of yourself, because "there's always more where that came from."

In Hexagram 13, it stands out to me that it says "True fellowship among men must be based upon a concern that is universal. It is not the private interests of the individual that create lasting fellowship among men, but rather the goals of humanity."

This would lead me to think (when reviewing which areas of self-development and education to continue pursuing) I should not focus on my personal interests, but on that which is going to better things for everyone you're involved with.

I hope some of this rings true! But if I'm way off, pleeease tell me. I'm still trying to improve in my interpretation abilities.

I wouldn't worry too much about form. Content is what's important. And interpretations here will vary because we're all students, and none of us are you, so our own personality and bias will be a part of our interpretation. In the end, it is for you to decide.

From my perspective, there's nothing you must do, but two things you must do if you wish to draw up water from the well: you must a) have a wooden pole that's long enough to reach the water, and b) you must be careful, not too hasty or reckless when pulling up the earthen vessel filled with life giving water. These of course are metaphors, as the well and the water also are. Until you contemplate and understand these essentials, there's no way to benefit from or have relationship with the Yi, and more importantly, that source within yourself.

The truths that you find within yourself may then be extended outwardly, and the same conditions apply. Because your well is accessible doesn't guarantee that others will be able to reach it or treat it (or you) with respect. That's why you must drink from your own well so as to not be discouraged or fearful.
