Sometimes the I Ching just nails it. I love it when this happens because it is so helpful to have "someone" just point out what you're doing, what's essential and no sympathy for moaning and groaning.
We are intending to fly back to New Orleans. It will be the first time I've been back since the flood. We've sold the house and now we have to clear out a storage shed in the backyard. Most everything got distroyed, but some stuff was stored in the container. I don't know what's in there but even if anything good survived we'll have to just pass it on as the cost of trucking anything back to Washington will be prohibitive.

So taking a tip from Rosalie, I asked the I Ching, "What should I focus on when I go to New Orleans?"

I received 56.2.4 changing to 18. The Traveler and Dealing with Decay.
Perfect. No big lecture on the deep spiritual meanings of death and renewal, just reality, "Your taking a trip to clean up a mess." The change lines are kinda nice too..
56.2 Staying at an Inn and getting some help.
We have reservations at a very nice bed and breakfast and we have been able to connect with a neighbor whom we're intending to give anything salvagable to. (So much easier if you have to give everything away to give it to a friend rather than putting it on the curb.) Having the I Ching point this out makes me appreciate that it's not just random luck that we have this Inn and Friend, but evidence Life is looking out for us.
56.4
Wilhelm's traslation specifically says. "limit desires". Yeah, okay, I know I'll only be able to carry a few things back on the plane. "Persistently concious of being a stranger in a strange land." Whoa, a clear warning New Orleans will not be what I remember. Thanks for the heads up.

Changing to 18. Working on What Has Been Spoiled.
Duh.
"The superior man stirs up the people
And strengthens their spirit."
Well this is good advice. Ask not what New Orleans can do for me, but what I can do for New Orleans. I'm not losing my tools, I'm helping my friend in his business.

Anyway, just thought I'd share the thoughts. If anyone sees anything more in the reading, I am interested.

I'm thinking that 56 also talks about lawsuits which I'll paste later on this post since it's long.

Not to be negative, but I'm wondering if your neighbor and maybe some of the people you see will have feelings about your leaving, or having the option of leaving. I was thinking that's what "limit desires" might mean.

Also, I've been there twice since the storm and it is appalling and shocking - and I didn't live there so it might be even more difficult for you to see places you used to go that may not be there anymore. It's really heartbreaking.
You may notice there are almost no children.

I don't have my books here - only some notes. So -here's what I've got:

"........The superior man is clear-minded and cautious in imposing penalties and protracts no lawsuits.

These words have to do with punishing others and warn against punishing them excessively, thereby creating ?lawsuits?. It also warns against putting people into permanent imprisonment by deciding they are hopeless.

A lawsuit is an ongoing inner conflict between people (families, nations, etc). One sues and the other counter-sues, one ambushes and the other seeks to pay him back; one accuses or insults and the other replies with an even greater accusation or insult.

Such lawsuits are difficult to end; once distrust becomes established, it is hard to eradicate.

One party is always suspicious that the other might start a new hostile action.

Each secretly waits for the old issues (?spoiled game? as it is called in Biting Through (Hex. 21) to be brought up. To be ?clear-minded? either means to recognize that a lawsuit exists or that we should avoid causing or continuing them.

We create lawsuits when our ego seeks to punish other people?s egos and when we feel vindictive pleasure at seeing someone get his comeuppance; lawsuits occur when we give others up as hopeless or dismiss them as worthless because of class, race or other facetious considerations."

This may not apply - but you may want to keep it in my mind - and that may also relate to 18, along with everything else you already thought about.

Thank you for making me aware of this, Rosalie. You were right to pick up on the lawsuit referances. My son sold the house to a neighbor who had been (is) our friend. But during the negotiating my son expressed a bit of sellers remorse, and the neighbor - rather than just saying something like - "Aw don't worry you'll always have a place to stay if you ever want to come back for Mardi Gras," actually went to a lawyer and sent my kid a letter threatening to sue if the deal didn't go through! It's supposedly all streightened out now and I hadn't even thought about it as a continuing drama but I think you've hit on something I should be sensitive to. Perhaps 18. Work on what has been spoiled, refers to the need to mend any hurt feelings that may linger.
Interesting, after giving your insight some attention, I have felt much better about the whole trip, as if some unknown cloud can now disperse. Further I'm seeing Work on What has Been Spoiled as not just mean clearing out my stuff, but I'm also realizing I can really get into the idea of considering what I can do to "stir people up and lift their spirits". Specifically, I've gotten turned on about flower essences lately and it would be totally doable to take a bunch with me to share.

It's a tremedeous help in getting ideas to evolve to have you and the Onlineclarity group to talk things over with!

Well, we don't actually go for another two weeks so meanwhile on to other thoughts.

Good - that seemed kind of drastic to have a lawyer write a letter???

With the Bach's - what do is recommended for tiredness (when not enough sleep)?

If you google Bach flowers you should come up with a site that will give a few words about each of the essences. I am just a beginner but I would think first Rescue Remedy cause that is just so good for so many things, then Oak is for people who can't give up and Olive is for exhaustion.

Advanced Bach Flower Therapy by Gotz Blome is my favorite book on the flowers.
