Hello--

I started a job freelance editing and my client paid me part cash, part bad check- He brought his brother (its his check) I cant imagine why they would have paid me 800 already and then void a check-- and am not even sure if I want to continue when there was balking with payment- acting as if he didnt know what half means, and now voiding a check. Part of me feels vindictive, get an attourney, keep the money and forget it-- I asked what to do and received 9-22 Any advice? I sense this means hold back, then move on from this trifle, but input would be great. thanks

Wilhelm sez: "It is
only through gentleness that this can have a successful outcome."
Don't be vindictive, push nicely (with grace) but steadily (don't take the bs) for your money. You're already prepared to take it as a loss but what do you have to lose by a little nagging?

If I were in your situation (and I'm glad I'm not :)) I would be happy to receive 9.2.5>22 in answer to the question 'what to do in this situation?' Here's why.

When you receive Hex 9 it means that gentle restraint and persuasion are what the situation require (which is an easier thing to do perhaps than exercising the great restraint required of you in Hex 26). The gentle restraint in this case is of two varieties: first, of yourself - restrain any petty or rash impulses that would aggravate the situation or challenge the debtor; second, persuasion is to be used on the person who owes you the money. ("Yes, of course I understand your reluctance to pay, but I have to remind you that you DO owe me the money and the simplest way for both of us is for you to honor the debt. I certainly don't want things to get more complicated, and I imagine you feel the same, yes?") Notice how what I've imagined you saying to him starts and ends with 'yes'? That's positive. The fact that the relating hex is 22 suggests that this approach is a graceful and beautiful way to deal with it, and suggests a graceful outcome as well.

The positive outcome I see in this approach is imaged in the two changing lines as well. 9.2 talks about being led back to where one belongs (Does this mean you and your feelings, or does it mean him and his honoring the debt? Does it matter?) And 9.5 is the most auspicious of all for debt collection: it talks of capturing truth in a way that connects with someone, capturing it in a way that allows you to walk right in and claim wealth for yourself. I would think that the truth being spoken of here is at least the truth that he owes you the money, if not the truth of how to make him see this.

You correctly clocked the holding back, Tabitha, but I really believe that moving on is not what the Yi's telling you, but rather holding back from moving on until you've exercised the power of persuasion to bring him around to where you want him.

Whatever you have set your mind to doing then stop, don't be reckless and be drawn into a conflict, it requires that you work with this guy to sort out the mess by cooperation and not by fighting.
