How to interpret Hex 9 line 5 with regards to a person's character? What kind a person is he? Sinister?

One I Ching book describes as bad so I'm confused.

Please advise.. Thanks.

I certainly do not see any sinister aspect to the character of a person described in line five of hexagram nine. I use the Wilhelm/Baynes version mostly, and find it works very well for me. I also occasionally use Alfred Huang's book some and Hua-Ching Ni occasionally, but I don't trust a lot of the other books. Some I haven't tried, and I don't know what you are using. In fact the W/B version commentary speaks of sharing with friends. I wouldn't worry about things at this point. To really see someone's character you are going to have to be around them a while.

Take that one Yijing book and throw it away.
Replace it with a translation of the real Yijing.

Strong person vs weak person?

In the Wilhelm/Baynes version, what is the meaning of weaker person and stronger person? Does it mean that men in ancient time are the stronger persons and women the weaker ones?

And what is the meaning of superior man?

There has been a lot written about this on this site, and a certain amount of disagreement as well. I hate to say anything because it could just open up a lot of emotional feelings from people about this subject, but I will say this just real quickly. In terms of rights and freedom, we are all equal. In terms of our capabilities, we are not. Hexagram 10 talks about hierarchy and states that hierarchy ought to be based on the natural talents that people have and not arbitrary choices. Of course, some arbitrariness is going to creep into the system, it can't be helped, but by and large hierarchy should depend on real capabilities.

The I Ching is written on many levels, but on the basic level, a weaker person could refer to someone who is not in a position to create a lot of change, where a stronger person could relate to someone is a better position to help. And some people are just mentally (as well as physically stronger than others). It may not seem fair, but it is reality. I am sure you have met people who just have a knack for getting things done while others aren't so successful. Most people have both strengths and weaknesses. It is just the way life is.

It is the same way with superior people and inferior. A boss is superior (within the context of the organization) to a lower level worker. It doesn't mean he has greater rights, or greater privileges, (excluding privileges within the organization) but it does mean he or she is in a greater position and can affect the life of the lower workers whether they like it or not.

I think this is enough. It is important not to react emotionally to these concepts, but just look at them in terms of real life situations.

I feel like I may have done you a little disservice by giving a generic answer. In terms of your specific reading it has no reference at all. It is typical of practitioners to make a lot out of every little part of the commentary, when in reality, while they are significant overall, they have little meaning for one specific question. I sense here a mind set that comes a little too much from fear and not confidence. In your case superior and inferior have little if any meaning. I would concentrate on the part of the reading that relates to your particular situation, and not let fear control you based on every little word in the commentary.
