Iv been hexagramming incorrectly

I'm such a nincompoop if been drawing my hex. Incorrectly. 6 is a broken line right as is 8?

I asked I ching what should I expect if I start work as a receptionist at ........so and so a place? I was answered with 46 turning into 39...

This answer seems more obscure than when I drew them incorrectly... Can someone please help me interpret?

Just tell us your 6 casts, for 46 > 39 you should get 897868, just note those numbers and give them away. If you make mistakes then the Yi can work around them to a certain point, however you will be more tranquil if you cast correctly.

It's a descriptive answer. The Yi is waiting for a more specific question. It's part of the Yi's teaching, don't worry about it and ask more questions. You need to learn to focus on your problem and express it with one clear question, otherwise your answer will be delayed, that's what 39 also suggests: do your best to get help.

46 - Formation

One is guided until they reach knowledge.

2 - If one makes a gesture, it will be noticed.

5 - Before continuing, one asks if the stage is completed.

Thanks taoscopy..I still find the translations obscure..is there a website that explains the meanings more clearly? and is a more direct question a yes or no question? I asled the receptionist qn again and now received 22 Grace turning to 41...?
Also what do you think of "nuclear" hexagrams? i was just reading about it..

Well this website has an impressive knowledge base called "Wikiwings", you can suscribe to it if you are eager to learn more.

Nuclear hexagrams are great fun! They give you more insight about the situation. They can also can give transformations, and the nuclear hexagram also gives another nuclear hexagrams with transformations, the possibilities are limitless.

But I rarely study them carefully, some people like to study the structure of the hexagrams and it's the source of great philosophical ideas, however for practical everyday questions they are not really necessary.


For your question here is the nuclear hexagram and it's transformation:

54: Assistance - a receptionist provides assistance

line 1: someone hesitates so go to meet the receptionist

line 6: someone needs something prepared from the receptionist

64: instability means that the customers come to tell you about their problems

Protect one's interests by making oneself useful.

1 - One hesitates so they go further.

6 - Others wait until one has finished to prepare before returning.

As you can see the nuclear hexagram and it's transformation can be seen as "the origin of the problem", so they give some insight but are not as useful as the oracle's answer.

For the heck of it, the nuclear of this nuclear is 53:

53 - To associate

One offers their fellows to overcome constraints by associating.

So you can see that the meaning is still related but becomes more distant from your original question. It's usualy not necessary to study that far! Unless you love doing that of course.

As you know there are 64 hexagrams, but those 64 hexagrams only give 16 nuclear hexagrams, and those 16 nuclear hexagrams only have 4 nuclear hexagrams: 1, 2, 63 and 64.

1 and 2 are their own nuclear hexagrams while 63 and 64 are the nuclear of each other (so there is order inside chaos and chaos inside order).

So, to complete our study we can see that the nuclear of 53 is 64:

64 - Instability

One must show patience and only act knowingly. They are cautious and inform their relatives.

Then it will alternate between 63 and 64.

63 - Maximum

One can make a few improvements to not see the decline.

I would stick with the basics for a while and not concern yourself with nuclear hexagrams, fan yao, strange systems that ignore lines, or anything else.
Master the fundementals of understanding the hexagrams and lines. There is enough there to keep you busy for a lifetime. (And less to make you dizzy.)
There are many sites with many different authors takes,
some of them try to explain through their religious beliefs,
Some are at times brilliant, sometimes... not so much.

Keep it simple, master the basics.

This one ! Read around. Not just here but in all the forums here such as exploring divination, Hilary's blog posts. There is also a free course if you click the learn section and there is also an on going foundations course in Change Circle. This is the best I Ching site there is so do some exploring.

You could also use the 'search' function here. In general don't swallow anyone's interpretation whole (including mine) People have very individual takes on answers. You must find your own way.
