Hi, everyone,

I have a friend who is highly enough placed to have the power to hire me. I have been an amateur, of sorts, in his field for a long time, and we worked together on an event once. There is a lot of affection between us, but I have never asked him for a job, because I didn't want him to think that I was coming around to wangle a job or advancement out of him (he is quite highly placed, way above me though that doesn't seem to play out in our friendship, except perhaps in a sense of mentorship coming from him--in other words, he treats me with respect like an equal, but advises me sometimes.) I wanted it to be clear that I was investing energy in him simply because I want his friendship, so I've never asked him for a job.

Well, it's getting to the point where if I don't get a job in the next two years, I will probably have to leave this region and move somewhere a lot cheaper. So I asked the Yi, Is there a chance he might offer me a job in his office?

I got: Hexagram 14, Ta Yu, Possession in Great Measure
14.2.3.6>51

In the second line, undivided, we have a large waggon with its load. In whatever direction advance is made, there will be no error.

Well, this seems good. Hillary said once that this line tends to be a reassurance, a "Hey, you're good enough" line. Also, I got this once in relation to him before. He had reached out to me, telling people who were waiting to see him to wait a moment while he greeted me, because I was an old friend.

The third line, undivided, shows us a feudal prince presenting his offerings to the Son of Heaven. A small man would be unequal to such a duty.

I'm not sure what to make of this. Is this line about him or me? Is it a warning that I'm not up to whatever job might be available? Talking about how a small man wouldn't be able to give me the job? Or talking about how I should offer help/gifts of my talents with sincerity and no attempt to impress or anything resembling artifice? (this is a Lise-influenced interpretation)

The topmost line, undivided, show its subject with help accorded to him from Heaven. There will be good fortune, advantage in every respect.
The situation is shifting, and Yin (the passive feminine force) is gaining ground.

Well, on the one hand, one can only say "Great!" right? but at the same time, Lise's interpretation is all about how spiritual achievement and spiritual rank are what counts, not material rank, which sounds like no job offer to me. It sounds like the Yi is saying "Get over this notion of a mere job."

The future is embodied in Hexagram 51 - Chen (Shock): There is an intimation of ease and development. When the time of movement comes, the subject will be found looking out with apprehension, yet smiling and talking cheerfully. When the movement, like a crash of thunder, terrifies all within a hundred li, he will be like the sincere worshipper, who is not startled into letting go his ladle and cup of sacrificial spirits.

And then there's the relating hexagram. I admit I don't fully know how to interpret these, now that I understand that they don't always represent "the future."

In this case, looks like a big shock or change that moves the earth itself. Which would sound more like getting a job than having things remain the same.

Anybody with any thoughts or advice or help would be appreciated.

Does your friend know you are looking for a job? Those lines suggest to me that
14.2 He recognizes you have abilities.
14.3 He might not realize that unlike feudal prince you can't do what you do just for the fun of it, you need to work for a living.
14.6 He would be receptive to your approaching him.

51. I see this hexagram as describing an independent individual so it makes me think your friend would evaluate your application just as he would any other job seeker - don't think he would feel you were imposing on your friendship.

First off, Rosada, thank you so much for your work on this site--I can't tell you how much your "Memorizing Hexagrams" threads have helped me--they're one of the first places I go for interpretation help.

Second, no, he doesn't know, because I haven't asked him. Once, a long time ago, I had an informational interview with him, talking about his field generally, but that was years ago (and we were much less close).

One thing Lise says about Ta Yu is that, while Heaven is helping you, you have to work for it. And I guess one obvious manifestation of that is, if you want a job, you have to ask for one. :)

Thanks for your help!
