Hi everyone!

I asked the I Ching, here on Clarity, about my job situation.

I've been seaching for a job for the last 8 months without success up until now.

So i asked if could find a job till the end of November 08 : 51 unchanging /Shock /Arousing/ Thunder.

Can there be any positive side on this hexagram on this context ?

I'm a newbie but the only thing i can think of is more upheavel, more struggle,
more "no's".

Thank you very much for your help.

Think of it as being a surprise or shock after messing about for 8 months.

Thank you Willowfox.
But i'm not sure if i understood your insight.
It's a shock/surprise of still not finding an appropriate job till November, or finding one?
I'm sorry, maybe it's my bad english ...
Best regards
Joana

I asked I ching - What does this interpretation mean for Joana and got -

45. Meeting changing to 17
Line 1:

Have confidence, it does not end.
If there is agitation, then a group seems to be shouting.
Each handshake turns into a smile.
Do not worry,
going forward is without fault.

When a group is agitated, it may seem intimidating. But addressing the issue and shaking hands will ease the situation. There is no need to worry, the connection will not be ended. It is no mistake to go forward and address the issue.

17. Following

Following.
A foundation for progress,
it is beneficial to persist.
Without fault.

Following someone elses initiative. This helps progress. It is good to keep doing this, it is not a mistake.

My interpretation would be - focused on shaking hands. The more hands you shake the better your situation seems to go. You will ind a job - but you need to create the action and go out and find something. Maybe addressing the issue is saying that you need to talk to someone else who can offer you employment until you can get a real job that you enjoy...?

I get the feeling that 51 is not a direct answer to your job question,
that it means that something else will happen which will distract
you from your job quest. Joshua's kind side-reading might hold the
key as to what that shock is about, something to do with a group
of people where there's much confusion? The I Ching has lots of
ways to say 'yes' or 'no', but 51 sounds like neither to me in this case.

Joana, I have been in a very similar situation the past few months. I have received 51 several times, and this is what it has ended up meaning in my case.

The first time I received it was the morning I received my first contact from the job I would end up eventually wanting very much. The shock was because I had sent a resume and cover letter so long ago that I wasn't expecting a call at all from them.

I received 51 a couple of times again when I would ask questions about this last interview I had-- from different perspectives. Both times it would be one hx changing into 51. Now in retrospect, it clearly means I would end up shocked about what I was being offered, since it ended up NOT being the position I applied for.

I do not think 51 refers to anything terrible at all-- there is a relief that comes with 51, a relief from pressure. But the nature of 'shock' is that we aren't expecting it, because then clearly we wouln't be terribly shocked if we knew it was coming, lol. Hang tight. It should bring some form of relief.

I like the translation you are using, may I ask which one it is?

I was just over reading in Open Space how Frank had asked about Obama's campaign and how he had received 51. Interesting to then come here and find you had gotten the same hexagram when asking about the job. I wonder if the 45 reading applies to Obama also? He's sure been shaking a lot of hands...

Looking at the sequence, I think of 50 as giving us a glimpse of the future so we might get ourselves in position. "The superior man consolidates his fate by making his position correct." Then 51 describes the shift to actually being in the new position. A real life example could be an eldest son who's always known that some day he will have to take responsibility for the family business, but even so it's always a jolt when he finally does take up the role and feels the energy of the new position. From 50. The Vision to 51.REsponding to the prediction, and the I Ching counsels how to handle it, "The superior man sets his life in order and examines himself." That is, one must recognize the new position is the role he was born to play and he must put his life in order to align with it and not harbor any "secret opposition."

So in your situation, perhaps the I Ching is encouraging you, like Vida and Obama, to go after the job you really, really want, the one you feel destined for, you just may get it.

Obama may be elected Nov.4 - perhaps that's when you'll be hired!

Thank you for the kind insights that you gave uppon my reading.

Joshua1230 even bothered to take a side reading to help the interpretation!

I must confess i don't like 17 that much, though, because it seem to always point out to other things/persons that are implyed in the reading.

Diamanda, i really hope i can manage NOT to be distracted from my job quest...:)

Vida, it really was a relief to read that you interpreted 51 as a relief, as a positive thing...in fact, after i posted the thread i got a call asking me to send my CV to a firm, but it was a very preliminary move...way to soon to tell, but was a surprise, a good shock (51) ...as it was shocking ( old fashioned shock..bad one!) making a new reading on this kind of opportunity and and reciving 21.1.4 > 23 !!!

Rosada, thank you too for your insight and your (i assume) bit of irony (about my interpretation):)

As i'm a newbie i read Wilhelm, Legge and LiSe...then i try Bradford's but since almost every time there are more than one moving lines...i get lost in the fog !

Then google the hexagrams and when i got completly confused i finally decide to try your patience here in the shared readings to see if i can finally make some sense out of the readings.

It's your kindness in answering to my doubts that makes me increasingly fascinated about the wisdom that the yi, if properlly interpretated, can carry into our lives.

Thank you very much.

"i really hope i can manage NOT to be distracted from my job quest"
well, you won't! "he does not let fall the sacrificial spoon and chalice" :)

The new reading about that position doesn't sound good. Perhaps that's
what the shock will be - coming from those quarters, and you should
not let this distract you or dishearten you from your job quest. 51 does
not say you will or you won't find a job, it's just telling you that first of
all you need to take care of the upcoming shock. It emphasises that
an important event is coming up (in this case not so pleasant).

21 shows that you want to fight to get that position.
21:1 is probably telling you that there will be signs, that the position
is not right for you, but you will feel inclined to continue to pursue it.
21:4 speaks of a very difficult situation, in which you'll be determined
to show strength and continue to persevere and pursue it. But, even
if they offer it to you ("securing funding"), it is still not advisable to
take it.
23 - collapse, "do not go anywhere".

It really doesn't sound like a good position for you.
In the meantime, also keep in mind the positive message of 51:
"Laughing words -ha, ha!"
There will be relief after the shock.
Perhaps your new reading on this position is relief enough in itself!
(in the sense that you should not let this particular one worry you
because it was not worth it in the first place).
