I just asked the question: If I contact my network, and ask for a job, will I get one?

45.2>47
if I contact my network, and ask them for a job, will I get one?

Here's the answer:
The present is embodied in Hexagram 45 - Ts'ui (Gathering Together): The king will repair to his ancestral temple. It will be advantageous to meet with the great man. Then there will be progress and success, though the advantage must come through firm correctness. The use of great victims will be conducive to good fortune, and in whatever direction movement is made, it will be advantageous.
The second line, divided, shows its subject led forward by his correlate. There will be good fortune, and freedom from error. There is entire sincerity, and in that case even the small offerings of the vernal sacrifice are acceptable.
The situation is evolving slowly, and Yang (the active masculine force) is gaining ground.

The future is embodied in Hexagram 47 - K'un (Oppression): Despite exhaustion, there may yet be progress and success. For the firm and correct, the really great man, there will be good fortune. He will fall into no error. If he make speeches, his words cannot be made good.

The backstory to this is that I have a tendency to self-sabotage and withdraw into myself immediately after having achieved a significant success. I'm also perennially shy, and have more difficulty following up on connections and selling myself--capitalizing on past successes--than I do with actually creating the successes in the first place. For instance, I withdrew away from the academic community right after I got my PhD.

My boyfriend pointed out this tendency to self-sabotage and I actually found it empowering, as it seems to put some of the power back into my hands, whereas when I felt like the world was simply behaving in a way I could neither understand nor make any good out of. That's why I asked this question.

It looks to me like the answer is: yes, but you might not like the job you get! Although it could be a more complex answer, like all will go well *where you have connections* but where you don't have connections things are going to suck, whether you have a job or not...Help?

An interesting reading, at least from my perspective, because it may be given info on two situations at once. The commentary on hexagram forty five line two says, "There are secret forces at work, bringing those together who belong together." In this sense, I feel it bodes well for your prospect of getting the work. But there is a second connotation here too, and that is the secret forces appear to be not only for getting the job, but for coming to understand yourself. The secret forces are the forces that bring you to see yourself as never before, and perhaps that can help you end the cycle of destructive tendencies.

Best wishes for your enterprise.

And kaelin, many of look at the second hexagram not only as a "future" hexagram but as a "relating hexagram". It sounds as though in this case the relating hexagram is describing your current relation to the answer. You are "confined" (and from what you say about your self sabotage you have confined yourself). It sound like reaching out to your network is certainly a good first step and as 45.2 says, "Good fortune, no mistake." I don't think that Hexagram 47 in this case is describing the future result of the action. It seems like more of a "relating" hexagram than a "resultant" hexagram in this case. So you don't have to worry about not liking the job that may result from the quest. You can ask another question once you see what possibilities arise.

So in a way the answer to your question is "Gathering Together when Confined" --- like saying "Yes, reach out from your confinement."

I agree with callingcrane

Hexagram forty seven describes your tendency to sabotage yourself, not the future outcome. The idea is that with a change of thinking, also comes a change in your circumstances.

Gene and callingcrane--that is a very useful insight; so you don't always take the resulting hexagrams as being a future outcome! That makes some of my readings make more sense, certainly. I should have known the I Ching was not necessarily going to be that linear. :)
I will check back in when I have a result from all this.
And BTW, I have been living a very 47 existence for about two years, so it makes sense that it would describe where I am *now*.
