Context: I've been out of a job since April. It's been a rocky road as summer was slow and I have had many interviews on a weekly basis almost and positive feedback, but never get the final offer. I have been very persistent on my job hunt and now I am lost at this point what to do since December is around the corner. Thankfully I live at home with parents so financially things are okay with me.

What should i do about my job situation? Hexagram 21.1.4 to 23

I am not sure how to interpret this. Only as hexagram 21 that this is a difficult task and hexagram 23 as "splitting apart" from the work force as in not being able to make a return? Or is this "letting go" of looking for a job, but wouldn't that be hexagram 40 then.

How should I spend my time? Hexagram 53.3.5 to 23

I am not sure how to interpret this either as it doesn't look helpful. I see hexagram 53.3.5 describes "a miscarried woman" and line 5 describes "a woman having no children for a long time", so I take this as a lack in success for any type of undertakings which then turns into hexagram 23. Was thinking it would say travel (56) or retreat(33), but doesn't look like that.

Should I worry? Hexagram 33.3 to 12

All I understand here is that I am blocked in general from everything, and there's some type of obstacle so stop giving it 100% in my job hunt?

Hi jp78, you haven't been here for a long time.

Let me see if I can make any sense of your answers.

I think this confirms you are in a difficult situation and it looks like, in 21.1, you are being held there for some reason ? The reason one cannot move in 21.1 is that one's feet are in the stocks and in my experience this is a time you are almost being held back for your own good, so you don't rush into some kind of trouble.

You asked what you should do and Yi shows you sitting with your feet in the stocks. When your feet are in the stocks you can't do anything at all. But it is considered a relatively mild punishment, more of a humiliation than causing huge suffering. This isn't to say where you find yourself is a punishment but it can feel like one, it can feel like being a kid put in the corner and told not to move.

I think perhaps the 21 is you trying to bite through to a solution but you just can't at the moment. In general I think the 23 shows this is due to things far beyond your control like the economic situation, cutbacks, your age, people you compete against for jobs, I mean all those things that we have no control over that can conspire against us in the job market through no fault of our own. So looking at this I don't see that there is much more you can do but what about line 4 ? Line 4 suggests it is worth enduring on through this tough time because there is ultimately something valuable going to come through it in perhaps an unexpected way. What if, for example, there is another route for you beyond the kinds of jobs you have been applying for ?

I think this whole experience is making you think about your life and Yi says ultimately this can bring reward but not necessarily in the field of job search you now envisage.

Remember 23 is the context of the question and here there is more confirmation that in your job search you really aren't on a winning streak ! It just doesn't look like it's possible to fight these conditions so what can you do with your time ?

Well in line 3 one is advised to take care of one's home, to take care of those one has a responsibility to and to 'resist outlaws' and resist being an outlaw oneself. An outlaw can be anything that tempts you to stop caring about looking after things, anything that makes you act recklessly or selfishly. Don't fall prey to hopelessness or carelessness, look after people/pets/things/yourself/your interests/home.

If you do this then in line 5 it seems along cherished dream or goal or indeed relationship/baby can come into view in time.

All in all this is a very long process I think and I think your test is not to fall prey to outlaws as I described above so that when fruition does come in line 5 you are able to receive it, to build on it, to be ready for it. Also what about your personal life, it may refer to that ? I'm not sure how old you are, or even if you are male, I think so, but I wonder if some of this has to do with personal goals, relationships. 53 is of course the long courtship procedure towards marriage. In line 3 the man abandons his wife and responsibilities, but if he doesn't do that then in line 5 she has a child.

Perhaps some of your time might be spent growing more relationships with people or cultivating the ones you have ?

Should I worry? Hexagram 33.3 to 12

All I understand here is that I am blocked in general from everything, and there's some type of obstacle so stop giving it 100% in my job hunt?

I wouldn't say give up your job hunt but I would say it is somewhat out of your control right now. I think there's other things for you to be focusing on rather than this kind of job hunt which I know may not make sense when you need the money but life is much bigger than jobs and sometimes life takes jobs away so people can work on the other stuff and there is a lot of 'other stuff' to work on in life outside of regular jobs.

Sorry my delay in response Trojina. Thank you for the comprehensive answer. I do feel things are out of my control and at this point I am interviewing with companies/positions I am not even interested in at this point. This experience is making me think hard about what direction I want my life to head in. I've actually planned a vacation abroad in Europe this Thanksgiving to take my mind off this situation. I have paid close attention to my family members and few friends, but it is rather difficult trying to court females when you're not working or doubting your career direction especially in a place close to NYC where everyone wants free dinners and the next best thing. Since you were wondering I am a 29-year old male just trying things out.

FYI, I learned about the Tao and the I-ching in one of my philosophy classes back in University and was fascinated by it, but lack the confidence interpreting the hexagrams sometimes. I feel like to truly have a grasp on it you have to experience the hexagrams first hand. I visited a hindu temple recently and had a brahmin priest look at me without any knowledge of who I was tell me that, "you haven't had a job in the past couple months and obstacles stand in your path outside your control" so it just confirms what you said Trojina. The solution was prayer and faith :/

Hi Jp, I see you’re still active!

what happened to that 21.14>23? Has that chewing unveiled something powerful yet? Did you find the reward in the same field or another field?
