Short version:

There is a survey here. Please take it!

Thank you! :bows:

(And the longer version: I was talking to Justin Farrell, author of some excellent Yijing journal software, about his idea for a dream journal. I said it'd be great to have software where you could store readings and dreams - and synchronicities - and other kinds of readings, if you use them - all in one place, and search and browse it by theme.

You can maybe guess what happened next: he volunteered to write it.

I think this is a superb idea. The cosmos at large does not communicate in separate boxes - dreams in one place, visits from birds in another, Yijing readings somewhere else. It's all one flow. Being able to store and review all the modalities together would make it that much easier for me really to get the message... which, after all, is the whole point.

Question is... would anyone else would buy this, or is it just me? Well... that and a few other questions, like which features would be important and useful to people.

So before we take this any further, before I ask Justin to get stuck into however many squillion hours of coding would be required to create this, please could you take the survey? It's just 10 questions - shouldn't take you long.

Also, if you have friends who are not Yi people but maybe tarot enthusiasts or interpreters of dreams - could you ask them to do the same? Maybe post a link on any related forums where you participate? That would be brilliant...)

Spose if it hasn't been created yet you don't know how much it would be...but doesn't there need to be a question on the survey re 'how much would you pay for this software ?'
because frankly thats a fundamental issue isn't it...its not how much I want it or what I'd do with it but can I afford it anyway

I see your point. I feel that way about sales pages - always scroll down to the end to find the price first. But you're right, we don't know what it would be yet. Nothing ridiculous. For now please assume it would be exactly what you would want to pay for it... maybe put a note in the box at question 10 to say what that is if you like... and plunk your answers in anyway.

(Trouble with putting pricing questions in surveys is that people's answers often bear little/no relation to what they would actually pay. So I decided we might as well just leave that one out altogether and have a shorter survey.)

If it is Mac friendly, and it seems it might be from the survey :), I will buy it for sure...unless it is like 5,000 dollars... then maybe I will wait for a coupon to come out or something.

Well... just fill in your email address after the survey, and then we will send you a coupon.

Has your avatar always been that yellow, by the way?

eh ? you can't just paint a crows stomach yellow and say its a robin  Looks to me like a very ill crow...with jaundice...or maybe has been subjected to cruel genetic experiment...or has very purulent pus like stomach infection ?

...anyway robins breasts are red....in UK...maybe American robins are yellow

Anyway I liked it better as a crow, it had more presence....now it just looks like it needs shooting to put it out of its misery.

ETA do the right thing AQ let this bird die and give us a healthy bird as an avatar

hahaha... you are so funny. I was jaundice as an infant so I guess it fits. I love the crow personally but love so many other animals. I thought I should change it up! :)

um.. but you are right... it is just a painted crow. You caught me. I liked the pink background and stance of the crow, so I just gave her a halloween costume of a robin. And I am keeping it for a little bit. I happen to like it. :)

...would be interested to know results of survey concerning Mac use. Or Hilary, if you know already about the possibility of it being Mac friendly. I am in serious need of organization.

There's a distinct possibility - Justin was talking about learning a different programming language specially to make something compatible. The survey results should help him decide whether it's worth it.

Can I take the survey multiple times using various different names? :p

Ssssshhhh try not to draw attention to this survey thing....cos if its just the 2 of us who entered the prize draw one of us will win it for sure right ?

So lets not go encouraging other people to notice it.....

lets talk about birds instead for example, custard loving birds

Hm. Maybe we should run a contest to find your new avatars. How about a nice, cute fluffy bunny?

Yes, the general intention is for the software to be compatible across Windows, Mac, and a number of other platforms too.

A fluffy bunny for trojan and a baby puppy for myself eh? People want to see cheek pinchingly cute stuff right? :)

I'm thinking of doing a reading, and based on the imagery, go from there with the next avatar. Let the Yi choose. Or other people on Clarity! I like the animal kingdom, but who knows what could happen...

Trojan still has not confirmed she will be changing her's...

That looks like a very discerning kind of rabbit  The kind of rabbit I'd almost consider as having as my avatar.

Having thought about it long and hard, and weighed up the pros and cons and so on

I have decided I cannot sacrifice the crab.....its my totem...

If that means the custard bellied bird must stay....sigh, then so be it

However I think you will change him soon anyway.....

...you are already changing
......you are already changing
........you are already changing

....see thats the hypnotic power of the crab.

Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow....but custard birds time is limited ;)
of that I can assure you

LOL yes something tells me that may remain my go-to journalling software.

The biggest obstacle to recording casts for me is indolence so would software help with that given I would still have to transfer answers from scraps of paper and old envelopes etc to the software.

If I can't manage to transfer them off scraps of paper to all to my big journals will I manage to transfer them to the software ?

OTOH, currently, each time I want to access a cast from a few years ago that I know is in a journal with notes etc I have to find a ladder, climb the ladder, balance precariously on ladder for 10 minutes trying to find the right journal, climb down the ladder, brush cobwebs out of hair, put ladder away...only to find I have the wrong journal which means getting the ladder back out.

I'm thinking this new software has to be an improvement on that

My first few years of journals are on paper, and I even had a go at indexing them... but that doesn't make them searchable, and doesn't make my handwriting legible either. I'm assuming Brad has an absurdly capacious memory and legible handwriting.

I'm wondering whether we can contrive some way of adding readings via mobile thingies, Iphones and stuff. Maybe use the phone to photograph the back-of-envelope reading, and add the photo to the software, or something. Of course, it's easy for me to have ideas... making them happen is Justin's department.

Truth be told, all of my notes are kept on Mac's TextEdit in RTF files, one page for each idea, labeled so they list properly, organized in folders and subfolders. I think RTF is the easiest of the WP formats.
I did my whole Matrix translation, including all of the word tracking, on notebook paper, without a computer. Barring a coronal mass ejection, never again.

I find keeping a journal a real investment. It does require work entering the readings, notes and outcomes, but there is a great deal to be learnt from looking back. The big advantage of computerized journals is that they are searchable. So for example, when I get a particular hexagram and line in a new reading, it is great having a facility where I can quickly view all my past readings where they had also come up (and what actually happened after the reading). I was lucky in that I have been keeping records on my computer journal almost as long I have been regularly practising I Ching.

Like Hilary says, the new software should help the data entry issues through the ability to store photographs of existing reading recorded on paper notes, and the facility whereby notes can be added via a smart phone. The latter could come in very handy for recording outcomes and developments relating to readings, which occur during the day, whilst users are away from the computer.

I'm channeling Truffles the rabbit under trance state

"At this point in time I can't see myself taking a photograph of a cast and I strongly disaprove of the practise. It seems a bit unecessary to me. I mean what are brains for. What is the human race coming to !? "

Out of trance

Well I agree with Truffles to some extent. I can't see myself taking a photo of a cast....don't have a smart phone....but presumably this would appeal to many more technologically advanced modern people....and even myself in the future ?

I'm just hoping this software doesn't get to be so complex I can't figure out how to use it. I think thats mainly what Truffles was trying to say. I think he may have been masking his sense inadequacy with modern technology under the veneer of disaproval.
