Hi All,

Can't find the thread where Karcher suggests one go into the next hex in sequence when one gets a 6th line changing. He spoke of 23 line 6 changing and going into 24. Was it line 1 of 24 to be looked at specifically or the whole hex? Please help.

By the way, I contstantly see this at work these days when I get sequence hexagrams when I cast again anyway. For example, if 24 must be looked at after 23 line 6, I get 24.

I understood Karchef's method to be that the odd numbered hexagram was the incentive, and the even the manifestation. So in hexagram 23 for example, when you receive line six, you consider 24 line one as the manifestation. If you receive 23 line five, then you would look at 24 line two as the manifestation. If you receive hexagram 24 line 4, you would look at hexagram 23 line 3 as the incentive. It is always paired hexagrams. The incentive hexagram is 3,5,7, etc. the manifestation is 4,6,8, etc. Three goes with four and four goes with three. You would not compare hexagram four with five, it is always the previous odd numbered hexagram. The lines are always opposite, so if you receive line one you would look at line 6 in the paired hexagram. Line 2 with line 5, and line 3 with line 4. Hopefully this makes sense.

A minute Gene,

If it's always the previousx hex, then why is 24 being looked at for 23 line 6 instead of 22? Confused.

Its the previous ODD numbered hexagram. So if you receive 23 line 6 then you would look at 24 line 1. If you receive 24 line 6, then you would look at 23 line 1. It is always the hexagram that it is paired with, and the odd comes first. One with two, three with four, five with six, etc etc. Two with one, four with three, six with five, etc. etc. Usually, the even number hexagram is the odd numbered hexagram reversed. There are certain exceptions to this, as, if you reverse hexagram one, you still have hexagram one. In cases like that, the even numbered hexagram is the odd numbered hexagram with each line changed from a yang line to a yin and vice versa. I don't think there are any other exceptions, but you can look through your book and see. As I recall, Karcher said these hexagrams were exceptions and he dealt with them in more depth in his book. I don't have the book or any way to get the book right now. Hopefully one of these days. But if you look at 23 it is five yin lines with a yang at the top. If you look at 24 it is all yin lines with a yang at the bottom. The exact reverse of twenty three. Because of that, they are considered paired hexagrams. So 23 shows us the incentive, and 24 shows us the manifestation. Now, there is something a little unusual about this pairing because, when line 6 of 23, or line 1 of 24 changes, you have relating hexagram #2. In most cases, when you use this method, the relating hexagram from the changing line will be the upside down hexagram from the relating hexagram of the changing line of the paired hexagram. That means you will have two relating hexagrams, that are paired, just like the original hexagrams are paired. For example, if you receive line 4 of hexagram 25, then for the manifestation you would look at hexagram 26 line 3. When line four of 25 changes, you get hexagram 42. When line three of 26 changes, you get hexagram 41. 41 and 42 are paired. This is the norm. Hexagram 23 and 24 follow the norm in terms of one hexagram being upside down from the other, but it is not normal in that both relating hexagrams are #2, at least when line six of 23 or line 1 of 24 are changing. Hopefully, when Steven's book becomes available, more will be cleared up.

Its the pair that should be investigate, and the pair alwasy starts on the odd number. 23 pairs with 24, so for 23.6 you check the 1st line of the pair (24.1).
Hex 22 pairs with 21, not 23.

Gene, Studying Karcher's post, I have a strong feeling that he looks at line 1 of 24 with changing line 6 of 23 and Pedro's 48 line 1 changing to 47 line 6 because it's spmething to do with placements of the changing lines themselves. 23 line 6 has to proceed in sequence to line 1 of 24 and 48 line 1 can only look back to 47 line 6 because it is at the bottom of the hex, not the top.

Whichever line changes in the hexagram, it is the opposite line that is looked at in the paired hexagram. If line one changes, look at six, if line two, look at five, if line three, look at four, etc. etc.
