Hello.
I've been renting a space for my private practice, one day a week for just over a year now. I work mostly full time at another clinic but thought I would give this a try. I haven't really been seeing many clients there and haven't really put in much effort to build a practice as I can be as busy as I want at my other place, where I've worked the last 8 years. I've been going back and forth as to whether I ought to keep renting the space and just put more energy into building more clientele there. I admit I've been somewhat lazy about it, but I enjoy the people there and have the potential to make slightly more money as I work for myself. I am torn because I don't know if I am just not being courageous enough to go about the work to build a private practice or if it's just not for me at this time. There is a part of me that feels I am taking the easy way by staying at the same place as an employee where all the business "stuff" is taken care of for me. I love it there and love the people I work with. At any rate I asked the Yi if I should stop renting at the new place at I received 48:1>5. I understand this as I'll have to work hard to build a practice at any new place I decide to move to, if I in fact do. Perhaps I could use the rent money for other endeavors. I would greatly appreciate any insight to this reading. Many thanks and much appreciation in advance.

Dear Chris,

I think Yi is saying that you should indeed stop renting the new place. The well is a good metaphor for your practice. Line 1 indicates that theres just sludge at the bottom of the well, this might indicate that this practice is situated in an area that ultimately will not prove worthwhile for your practice. Maybe there's a similar practice close by to the new one, because noone is using this well. In iching 123 it says 'people must themselves be useful for society. If a person has no value to society or makes a stingy contribution, he will be deserted by society'.

I think the Yi knows that in the other practice your helping alot more people. and possibly the additional pressure of this new practice will not succeed, as you need to go through all the following lines in jing to reach 48.6, when the practice is of great use to society and can be easily accessed. Maybe by keeping both jobs, your own contribution to society, your practice, will be greatly impeded.

I do get the vibe that the Yi is saying that you should stop renting the place, but just to play devils advocate, 5 is the follwing hex, which might give some hope. However the fan yao of 5.1 is far from the end of waiting, and it must fix securely at this point why its waiting. 48.1>5 suggests that you'll be waiting for more time for yourself to begin to develop your own practice, and currently I dont think youve really developed a firm intent to do that, as you are currently obligated elsewhere, and yi says that this job is going to ultimately help alot more people. I dont think the sage really cares whether youll earn more money or not! :) This book is about helping as many people as possible as far as i've seen.

Yx

Thank you yx. I appreciate your insight and wholly agree with it. There have been several other people who have tried to start a practice there with little return in their effort. I don't need the extra space and can be plenty busy where I currently work. Thank you again for your insight and it's very helpful in teaching me the ways of the Yi.
