Leerling, you may want to look at the bibliography http://www.hermetica.info/YixueBib.htm that Bradford and others maintain. You will find Schulz's works listed there, as well as a myriad of other works by serious students of the Yijing.
To sum up about the hexagram sequence:
There is no one answer. The bottom-line is that there are pairs of hexagrams in an order that was set a long time ago. The order starts and ends with symbolic hexagrams. It is divided in half, unevenly.
This basic structure is what people have been exploring. Mostly, people have just accepted the order at face value.
Number of scholars over the centuries have pursued explanations of various aspects of the order (in essence, the Wings are some of the first recorded attempts).
In recent decades, some have proposed mathematical explanations, life cycle and seasonal symbolism and patterns, narrative, history, line dynamics, and on and on.

I suggest reading the following:
The Ten Wings (Rutt is most thorough)
Steve Moore's Trigrams of the Han
Hacker, Edward and Steve Moore. ‘A Brief Note on the Two-Part Division of the Received Order’
Scott Davis' Classic and his papers

Others, including Schulz, have proposed new orders, so you will also find articles on that topic. Mawangdui is one of the alternate orders from long ago.

These will give you a good survey of what's been done.

Thank you all! I think I now have a list of 20 to 30 of the most essential works on the I Ching. My apartment is already chock-full of books (on all kinds of other subjects) so much more is out of the question, and besides: enough is enough.
