Based on a 1661 book by Joseph Glanville, Matthew Arnold's poem "The Scholar-Gipsy" (now often 'Gypsy') recounts the apparitions of an Oxford scholar who abandoned conventional life to live with the Gypsies.

Glanville wrote:

"There was very lately a lad in the University of Oxford, who was by his poverty forced to leave his studies there; and at last to join himself to a company of vagabond gipsies. Among these extravagant people, by the insinuating subtilty of his carriage, he quickly got so much of their love and esteem as that they discovered to him their mystery. After he had been a pretty while exercised in the trade, there chanced to ride by a couple of scholars, who had formerly been of his acquaintance. They quickly spied out their old friend among the gypsies; and he gave them an account of the necessity which drove him to that kind of life, and told them that the people he went with were not such imposters as they were taken for, but that they had a traditional kind of learning among them, and could do wonders by the power of imagination, their fancy binding that of others; that he himself had learned much of their art, and when he had compassed the whole secret, he intended, he said, to leave their company, and give the world an account of what he had learned."

Matthew Arnold : The Scholar-Gipsy

A contemporary of Arnold, the remarkable Charles Godfrey Leland, investigated the Gypsies and concluded that their fortunetelling ability is a common human possession:

Leland believed that intuition and creativity could be taught, and apparently conducted a large scale test to prove his theory: "The proof of this is that the 200 pupils who attended an industrial or art school in Philadelphia took precedence in studies among 110,000 others in the public schools."

Hi Tom,

Interesting synchronicity your interest in Gipsy lore and posting the above messages. I've been looking for the same information myself for the past few weeks. I happens that I recently started watching (oh, the shame of it all...

) a soap opera in the Spanish channel Telemundo called "Gitanas" (which is the plural word for gipsy girls in Spanish) which is, I think, quite good in capturing and showing that lore as it is lived in Mexico to this day. There is a big community of gipsies in Mexico and in many other parts of South America and their perception is as bad as anywhere else in the world, something I consider very shameful.

In my case, I remember, as a child, watching Gipsies coming to the town I lived in and setting up their big tents in empty lots. They would stay for a couple of months and then move on. The colors and the people were something to watch and awe. This soap shows that way of life pretty much as I remember seeing it. That's when I started looking for information about their lore...

As you may know, Spanish soaps only last for about 4 to 5 months (not the lifetimes of American ones). To anyone interested, I believe Telemundo has a "closed caption" feature in English for this soap that airs at 9PM EST.

Hi Luis. I hope you will look at Leland. He gives some of his own experiences as a diviner, a theory of divination, and profound comments on the nature of the human mind, and this is from the 1800's.

You want real gipsy lore? Type "George Borrow" into google. Try and get hold of a copy of "Lavengro". You will find more of Romany interest there than in Borders or any small-town "New Age" bookstore. Trust me!
