Hi All,

I thought with all our heavy war discussion last week we could use a bit of levity. Hence....

Ever wonder about this stuff......?????

1. Only in America......can a pizza get to your house faster than an
ambulance.

2. Only in America......are there handicap parking places in front of a
skating rink.

3. Only in America......do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front.

4. Only in America......do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke.

5. Only in America......do banks leave both doors open and then chain the pens to the counters.

6. Only in America......do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage.

7. Only in America......do we use answering machines to screen calls and then have call waiting so we won't miss a call from someone we didn't want to talk to in the first place.

8. Only in America......do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight. (THIS ONE ALWAYS BUGGED ME!)

9. Only in America......do we use the word 'politics' to describe the
process so well: 'Poli' in Latin meaning 'many' and 'tics' meaning 'bloodsucking creatures'.

10. Only in America......do they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering.

EVER WONDER ~~~~

Leonard,

I really sat here at my desk laughing my strange very conspicious laugh at your lines. You are really funny. Thanks. Makes me feel specially great since last night I shed a few tears over my boyfriend's new pessimism about our future -- now that our meeting is postponed to dunno when because of his new research project on the Grand Unification Theory...but I still think it's worth waiting for him because despite it all odds we're so crazy about each other. Sigh how long must one wait? I got hexagram 39 -- (no moving lines) but anyway, that's okay since friends help you overcome the obstacles in your path. And since you're MEANT to overcome, so says the Yi.

Hotdogs in packages of 10 and buns in 8. It's a plot I tell you, a plot. when you are out of buns, you go to the store to buy more, but then, when you are out of dogs you still have 6 buns to go, so back to the store you go to get more hotdogs. eventually it evens out, but by then you are sick of dogs and buns and swear never to buy them again, at least, until they go on sale again at a significant discount.

Hi Angel,

Sounds great to me. Espana is still a bit in the future for me, perhaps as much as two years. Sigh.
I really miss it though and think about Denia and Altea every day!. Also have friends in BeniAli and miss their company. I WILL get there, somehow/someway/someday! ;-))

Angel, I would like to take this opportunity to say I think your advice to Candida was very well put and extremely to the point. Good job. I was thinking of sending her an answer in much the same vein but your suggestion about making a list and writing those things down never occurred to me. Very good, I believe she has received most of the tools she needs to resolve her problems now, thanks to you and Candid, who also made some very good points in his post to her.

Keep up the good work, I look forward to meeting you mano a mano when I finally arrive in Espana.

But some day it will happen I'm sure. When my son is a bit older and my dogs too and maybe Ican ask my ex husband to look after the house and the dogs! PLUS My guy is still a student so I oughta find a way of earning abroad too.

Serious bit...
Anita - I find that almost any unchanging hexagram means 'work through this if you want to get beyond it', and with hexagram 39 the idea is that if struggling on in the same way as before is not bringing you what you seek and need, you need a complete rethink, what Karcher calls a total 're-imagining' of the situation. I don't know whether this is what Leonard had in mind when he suggested that you should think about moving, or whether he just naturally has marvellous intuition
wink.gif
. Anyway, it could be time to brainstorm some truly radical ways of changing things...

Non-serious bit:
do any Americans here know what 'DIY' means (note to Brits, please don't tell them), or should I perhaps be thinking of a different heading for 'DIY Corner' in the newsletter??

Look, people, I was just a bit worried I might have discovered another 'fortnight' equivalent when a US correspondent wrote to say he was still trying to guess what 'DIY' in the newsletter stood for, and was it something very clever and Yi-related.

I disclaim all responsibility for anything else anyone might read into this.

By the way, Leonard, you missed out the Japanese instructions for I-forget-what which read, cryptically:

'Do not use for the other use'

Well, gosh darn, Hilary. I have all these other things going on right now in my life and although I will eventually become proficient in reading Japanese, as of the moment, I shyly admit I can only speak it. But.....it is on the list. I'll get right on it just as soon as I return from my afternoon appointment with the nose-hair plucker!

ps: Could you send me the meaning of the Brit 'DIY' by private email? I am literally bursting with curiousity!

OK, I used it 'for the other use' and it was almost a mystical experience. Wow! Forget that afternoon appointment, I'm gonna learn to read Japanese right now! Who knows what further adventures lie waiting within packaged foods? Thanks for the tip, Hilary!(Oh, and I love it when you say fortnight! Really, honest Injun, cross my heart. I was not being facetious.)

Dear Hilary,

How right you and Leonard are! I know you are but a struggle it is going to be. Today I went and got some canvas to start a series of smaller paintings that I could carry along and sell in Germany -- that way I don't need to depend on my job here. I could spend 3-6 months there and come back and have enough to live on. Plus I have a short story course I've written going online next month and am also working on a copywriting course AND a non fiction book on staying young. So I am trying hard. This way I can keep going across to him (and he too will be coming here, but for shorter periods as he's still studying).

By the way, when I asked about the possibility of selling my art in Germany I got 31 line 5 changing to 62. Does that mean that -this sounds silly I know - I'll move my back and shoulders asb the line says -- which means paint, have no remorse and yet 62 warns I must not expect too much right? According to all my critics as well as my boyfriend, the paintings should sell very well abroad -- better than here in India. I do Fauvist (is that the correct term?)nudes. The 24 I already have are on heavy hard board and too large to transport easily I think. I was wondering, could 62 also mean that I should keep the paintings small -- as I intend to?

Any insights, anyone?

Hi Anita,

Interesting concept that you should make your paintings smaller and transportable. That idea hadn't occurred to me, regarding your reading.

62, to me, concerns "the doing" of particulars. We receive inspiration and set about drawing the plan or blueprint. Then the working on details begins.

In your case, this could mean a new brush or new brush-stroke. It could be encouragement to keep on painting. Focusing on the doing, or the continuance of doing.

In the workbook, Artist's Way, the author offers two views of writing, or any art. See which of these two sounds to be full of life force:

1) I painted a picture.

2) I am painting a picture.

62 represents offering #2. Its being done in the present and not crediting the past. The focus isn't on "the greatness" of your work, but on the "smallness" of doing. Greatness comes as a result of working on the small details, on refinement of past accomplishments.

Your idea about reducing the size of your paintings is interesting and may well apply. But only you could know this, and it may not be for certain in your own mind. Why not try it and see what comes of it? See if magic doesn't happen. If you are right about it, magic will happen, and your painting will reflect this.

The same applies to actually selling your art. Details of how to accomplish this is as important as the art itself, if you wish to profit from it.

Long ago, I shared something here that was (longer ago) shared with me. "An artist's responsibility is to their art. An entertainer's responsibilty is to their audience." Its up to each of us to determine our own definition of which we are, or both.

Dear Anita,

I got the feeling that you are not getting the most of your answers. I know this is not the first time somebody has told you this, so I will try to show you what you might have missed:

1.- Try to think in one phrase linking the primary, related hexagram and line to get a general idea, very simple. Something like: ? ?humility?, avoiding regrets, will have a response?. Just to have in mind the relating hexagram while working in the primary hexagram.

2.-Read and re-read Gua Ci (The decision): You have HENG and ZHEN that means: Favorable Divination, your partial answer. Then, you have a clue about how to get the most of it: ?Auspicious for taking a maiden as wife?. This can be taking literally or metaphorically, but in either case, you should think in this, is important.

3.- Gua Ming, or Hexagram name XIAN is the picture of a halberd and a mouth. The meaning of this is not clear; It can be ?no mouth but goods? , or ? attack with the mouth comes closer? or something else. Since you are writing and painting, and mouth is related to words, you can have here a hidden meaning. Study this further. See Lise´s Yi for more information.

4.-Have you notice the trigrams?. Something like ?Your inner tranquility brings joy to your work?. See the small beautiful things that aide us to understand situations.

5.-Your nuclear Hexagrams in your primary and related hexagram are VERY important in this case, both have the same internal meaning: exhaustion. Hex. 44 is the exhaustion of coupling, and Hexagram 28 the exhaustion of your activities. You should work on this!.

6.- Yao Ci or line.- ?Affect one´s back?. Actually is not the back that you see, but the spine If you read all the lines in this hex. Only this line names an internal body part. Might it have something to do with your nude paintings?. And then you have the result of this: ?without regret?. Keep in mind that, ?without regret? means only is OK.

7.-Hexagram 62, your related hexagram , in this situation and in my opinion, is not a warn or any future event, but your own mood. Asking several people as you do with the Yi seems to me lack of security in yourself. That what in point number 1, I wrote humility to name this hexagram for your case. See also the ideograms for this hexagram XIAO GUO: e grains of rice and a difficult pass in a mountain.. The ideograms here are telling you something. Discover it!

8.-Hexagram 61 is both your complementary and the hexagram before your relating hexagram. Were your believes the pre-era for your actual situation? Why now seem to be missing in you present state but still there outside?. Think in two trees: pine and oak planted together, they are different but both are trees, and when one moves with the wind his branches reach the other and viceversa.

9.- Since you are a religious person the Da Xiang or symbol in hex 31 should not be missed: ?the noble one receive people by emptiness?. Do you remember the female image in the decision?. More ideas to work on..

10.-A little bit further, to understand better the line I have looked at the Fan Yao , the line 5 in your related hexagram. I really like the metaphor:
Talking about possibilities??.?Dense clouds, but not rain?
Achievement ?The duke shot a bird with his string-arrow?
Difficulty????..?He retrieved from a cave?

I have not pretended to do the reading for you, just make you aware of some important points that you might be missed. I would love to heard somebody else opinion. There are some many good advices to find inside!

Anita, I have done this writing with all my heart, please do justice and take the time to meditate about it.
Thank you.

Just one further thought on Hexagram 39 - I think part of the idea is to change from struggling on your own to working hard (that doesn't change!) with friends and helpers. At the least, don't assume that you have to do it all by yourself and in isolation. But I am absolutely delighted that you're taking 39 to heart and doing some rethinking.

Angel's given you a wonderful range of ideas on 31 >> 62 to explore with your own intuition and build up your own understanding. Maybe start out with the idea of Influence as the way art works? Literally being open for a 'flowing in'... being vulnerable (that mouth and axe!)... and also having an influence, because you become a conduit for the energy...

I'm not sure if anyone knows 100% for certain which precise part of the anatomy is in the line - Angel, where did that come from? Something I should be reading, no doubt! Still, I'm fairly sure it's the centre of strength and actual action.

This is a hexagram you might even understand best by doing the actions. Seriously - feeling energy entering your spine or your upper back and neck, and seeing how that affects the way you stand and move. (I've been known to walk round the room experimenting with this one and #52!)

I hope you can find the time for all this exploring, rethinking and experimenting!

Have you put any of your paintings online? I would love to see them.

My My!

That's what I call friends! All of you who have given me wonderful insights. Leonard, Angel, Candid, Hilary. Angel, you're right, I still tend to miss things in my readings. But sharing them and asking for insight is no measure of my insecurity. After all, this group is for that. Besides I'm not perfect. Angel thank you seriously for your reading and for taking the time. Hmmmm...marrying maiden-- you bet I haven't missed that since I have received it at other times while asking about my future with him. Trouble is I don't understand nuclear trigrams, so I don't look for them. How do you figure them out? I will think more in depth about your reading and get back to you as I begin to work.

Candid, thank you so much for your taking time with my question. Blueprint must be part of the plan of course otherwise the paintings will simply linger on my already overloaded walls! When he comes he can take them along with him to see what kind of interest they incite in Germany.
And magic? I'm sure that will happen as it always does happen whenever I create with words or paint.

Hilary, working with friends -- makes me also think of you people as well as him and my friends in the Temple. Prayer does wonders -- it channels you into the right way of thinking and acting. The last time he was here (about 5 months back) he said I wasn't trying hard enough from my side to be with him and that all the responsibility seemed to be on his shoulders -- that's 28 for you Angel. Also I AM trying to do a lot at one time -- so maybe I should cut out the copywriting course that is almost written any way, and concentrate on my non fiction book and my painting. I find that the energies of painting and writing are totally different from each other and so they do clash. I normally cannot write my own stuff when I paint (aside from what I do in the agency which is my bread and butter anyway!).
And 44 -- hmmm I hope that happens! The last time he thought that not coupling would help him come to terms with the idea that we would be separated for much longer than we thought. That I found very unnerving.

Hilary, the spine, oh yes, I stand all the while when I paint and I forget about all else -- there's no exhaustion then and no hunger. Just the canvas and me. Later on I do feel exhausted, but that's fine. Sigh -- I used to have my painting online when I had a website but I will try to post some here. Where should I do that? If you'd like to see a small version of one of them, you could maybe check out an interview on http://www.Koramangala.com under Kora Buzz. Anita Saran John there.

I'm getting really excited now about painting again after ages. The last time I painted in a frenzy was in 87,98,99. And then just one after that. My main passion is writing.

Hilary, I will certainly think more deeply about what everyone has told me here. And thank you again.

Also, I've just got myself a Webphone connection today so I can call Germany for pittance. So now I can afford to talk to him every week! Great excitement on all fronts.

Hi there,

Hilary,

The idea of the spine instead of the back or shoulders seems to me quite natural. From a traditional point of view, line five is yang , correct, central and responding. So the idea of something internal, strong and central makes sense to me. Besides form a modernist point of view, Richard Alan Kunst in his doctoral thesis ?the original Yijing? translates mei2 as spine. This idea is also supported by a classical teacher, Henry Wei in his authentic I Ching. No doubt that nobody can be 100% sure of the exact meaning of mei2 and many words in the Yi. Actually the real mystery is in the hexagram name: Xian2, How can a character that represents a halberd means together, unite, complete?. Lise, any idea?

Anita,

One upon the time, there was a boy that asked the Yi: Does she love me?. The Yi answered him: ?there is not fish on the sack?. The boy thought, that´s great, since she hates fish, that means that she really love me and he went to the bar to celebrate it with his friends. At night he was alone at home, his girlfriend had left him for his best friend. The reaction of the boy was fire the Yi because it didn´t work . I don´t want you to be in that situation, disappointed and without the aide of your friend Yi. Sometimes, answers don´t come easy and require some time and study. We tend to see what we like to see. It´s human nature.

You can find a great deal of information about nuclear hexagram at clarity following this link: http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/practical_I_Ching/contexts.html Meanwhile a little game for you. Find similarities in the names of your nuclear hexagrams:
Hex.- 44 Key words: dissipation, interference, extenuation, attenuation, distractions, complications, chance encounter, undermining, awaiting a meaningful affair, indiscretion, seduction.
Hex. 28 Key words: Inundation, saturation, extremity, crisis, emergency, stress, strain, encroachment, transgression, overload, surcharge, overwhelming, too much.

My opinion is that is two hexagrams, doing the same function are saying the same, this must be something important.

About your related hexagram, keep in mind that is very subjective. It is up to you to decide what it means, I was only conjecturing.
About your invitation for doing the reading of 28, I let somebody else to do the honors.( is this English?) One last advice, in order to have a clear answer you must first ask a clear question, since you seem to be asking quite often, I think you could get clearer answers if you frame your questions in a particular time, like : how about going to Germany next week?
It´s a trick that works for me, try it!

Don´t forget to name Lindsay among your friends. She gave you one of the best reading I have seen in this site.

Have a nice weekend with your son and family. I love your painting and yes, definitely you are top model.

Thanks Angel again. And for posting the link. I'm really hopeless at such things. And thanks Lindsay too. I am constantly learning here and you're right Angel, sometimes I see what I want to see but I'm trying to overcome that. Angel, are you saying that this meanginful affair (44) could become too much to handle? (28). Well, I'll keep that in mind, but I'm not gonna give up on it.
