Light of Superior Man

Hi All---

Asking Yi a question about destiny and the last hexagram was 64 (line 5 fan yao) the light of the superior man.

I asked Yi what this means and received:

16.2,3,4 & 5
40.3,4, & 5
32.4 & 5
46.5
48

16.2 a man of wisdom knows the timing and what will become...

Any thoughts on this reading? I would appreciate any comments!

Especially on 40.3 --- I have received this often in the last couple of days.

Thanks,
Deb

Hi Deb

Sorry I can't answer your questions. First off, I don't know what it is about destiny you wanted to know, and maybe it is best for me not to know. That's okay. I'll communicate with you in email.

I have an idea about 40.3 but it probably doesn't apply in your case. Then again maybe it does, just not in the way you are looking for. A burden on the back can often be anguish and sorrow we have experienced that we do not let go of. The carriage is the outer shell we show the world that every thing is okay. When deep down, you know it is not. We can often be "oppressed while riding in a golden carriage." Everything outwardly looks okay, but our inner world is full of insecurities. Our insecurities can attract hidden enemies in the sense of further negative thinking, negative thinking to keep company with the original negative thinking. More than this I cannot say, but will email you soon.

Thank you Gene--

The impression I get regarding 40.3 is something poor looking impressive, as though a false representation. A show of wealth (although there isn't wealth it is implied that there is wealth) will attract those who would benefit from it...

Don't know, though.

yes, Deb

That is certainly a valid reading of this line. I was just giving it somewhat of a personalized meaning, though it may not apply to you. I do think though that there has been significant hurt in your past. I just don't want to trivialize that, or say much about it in front of everyone. So I will leave it at that and you should get my email soon.

Another thought regarding 40.3....

If one has a burden to carry, the carriage offers rest which draws others who want it for themselves, or if they are envious seek to deprive you of it.

Hi Deb

In ancient China it was consider a breach of propriety for people of lower rank to ride in a carriage. It was reserved for those of high rank. If someone of low rank rode in a carriage, it was figured that they did not have the power to defend and protect it. In today's world this does not apply, However, it still can make others envious. Sometimes people want to take away what we have not because they can use it but because they want us to be just like them. In effect we are saying, I am higher rank than you, and the other person says, okay, proove it! I think in your case though, there is something on the mental or emotional level that you have not let go of. Some feeling, some anger or disappointment. The robbers are the internal feelings of guilt, of hurt, of pain,of anger. They robs you of your joy. Wrong attitudes, and I don't mean that in a bad way, can seize our day and destroy the joy of it. They can oppress us as in a golden carriage. (hexagram 47) They can sneak up on us like creeping vines. At first we don't notice, until they have well wrapped themselves around us. They can make us feel there is no way out, as in hexagram 39. They can become the hawk on the high wall that needs to be shot down. Well, now I am rambling. By the way, all these things apply to me too, with the attitudes I have to what I am going through right now, as you more than most are aware of. We do not allow the universe to do its own thing in its own time, but maintain hard attitudes all day long. (As in 16.2)

By the way, tonight is a near full moon, so probably many of us are feeling our emotions even more than most of the time.

Gene,
I think everyone has pain in their life at one time or another. We can't live if we become a victim (hmmmm transporting corpses???)

I'm not feeling pain or holding on to it. I think if I'm holding on to anything regarding this destiny reading, it is potential. But that in itself isn't best either.

And maybe that is not allowing the "universe to do its own thing in its own time"...

Thanks for those wise word!!! : ) And thanks for your thoughts and time as well. I do appreciate it very much.

Sometimes we may receive the line, "the light of the superior man is true," when we have come to understand the lesson the I Ching has for us. It can also be received when we have questioned or doubted the I Ching. Before completion points to the hopeful promise of spring. The new era is almost upon us. As such, we review our past life and see it in a new light. This is a time of reflection. The victory has been won. We now look back over the achievements of the past, and become aware in a new way, like never before.

Here the I Ching makes its influence felt. We begin to understand that it is deeper than we imagined. Just like the great water we are trying to cross. When the line changes we have hexagram 6, And here it does not further one to cross the great water. We have already gone through the danger, and reached the light of the end of the tunnel. "Thus the superior man carefully considers the beginning." Another way of speaking of reflection. Also, in reflection, we discover the causes of "the finest clothes turning to rags" in sixty three when the new era begins, and already are starting the process whereby things may be shored up on a regular basis, and the new era prospers continually.

We review our mistakes in the battle we have just won. The battle may very well be inner. Things going on inside us no one sees. But we see because the line is in the middle of the trigram li, which means eye. We learn how to deal more efficiently with the situation in the future. And we grow and become stronger through the experience.

See also, hexagram 36, the image, "The superior man veils his light, yet still shines." How is that possible? It is because it is done by deed and action, not by talk. I often hear people say, (not to me necessarily, but maybe me too,) Do you have confidence in yourself? What confidence? Either you can do something or you can't. If you have practiced and trained for it, you can do it. If you haven't you can't. And yet I see over and over again. Somebody says, "I can do it," so everybody believes him/her. Words mean nothing. Lao Tzu said, "he who talks doesn't know, and he who knows doesn't talk." The more I live the more I know this is true, (and yes, I know, I do a lot of talking) The light of the superior man is true because he has paid the price and made the offerings in order to become something special, something that has character, quality, and endurance. Our dark side will be brought face to face with us sooner or later and sometimes in not such pleasant ways. Luke Skywalker found this out in his trek through the cave and came face to face with his dark side. "To be a true champion one must explore the darkness also." It is not always easy to align ourselves with the light of the superior man. One way to do it is daily use of the I Ching for personal growth. Also, daily practice of "Chariot driving" as in 26/3. This can be study of Tai Chi, yoga, meditation, or whatever, but something to help us along the way. I am a firm believer that American, and probably other societies nowdays honor and emmulate the wrong groups of people. We honor our movie stars, our politicians, our singers, and dancers. People who are good, and have some good qualities, but have done nothing to understand their dark side. To know themselves. To get in touch with the higher powers, call it gods and spirits, or unconscious and superconscious. The superior man has "fought the good fight," and overcome himself/herself, and the dark side also. He has gone beyond the boylike contemplation of hexagram 20, or the viewing through the crack of the door. He travels a lonely but straight path, unassailed by the viscitudes of the world. Hexagram 10.2. He asks or seeks nothing, but goes on his way, and learns and understands the path of righteousness, and the way.

I realize the above doesn't have much to do with your reading per se. I will try to get to that later.

In hexagram 16 we "set armies marching." This is done because we have developed such personal power, by the experiences in hexagram 15, we learn to humble ourselves and cooperate so well with other people, they are willing to follow us even into battle. In order to do this we have to be able, like line 4, to gather people around us like a hair clasp holds hair together. Then having done that we have a following in hexagram 17. The I Ching too, counsels us to gather around, get into the army of truth, set ourselves marching to the drumbeat of the side of truth. The I Ching asks us to be a part of the whole. In 15 we set aside our personal wishes and learn to cooperate. In 16, we become part of the whole. By becoming part of the whole we drop our ego. We see things on a cosmic scale and become one with heavens army. Then we follow the leader in hexagram 17.

The final hexagram was the well. How fitting an answer for "The light of the superior man." For it is by drawing from the well that we receive light, and water, our nourishment, our replenishment, and metaphorically, our wisdom and experience. The well asks no one to come to it. It is only there for those who search for it. It does not woo, it does not advertise. It simply exists. "The superior man hides his light yet still shines." The superior man is one who has drunk from the well. The average person walks on by without even realizing that it is there. They see from a limited perspective, and only from those things that are personal and of concern to them. All else fades away into oblivion. If they do drink, they only drink from the mud of the well. they get a simple answer to their question, and are happy going on their own way. And the Lord says of them. "you say that you are rich, and have need of nothing, but in fact you are in poverty, I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire." Nobody wants to go through the Baptism of fire. "John Baptizes with water, but I baptize with fire and the holy ghost" We want to know how our relationships will turn out. We want to know how our careers will turn out, and we want to know other day to day things. But we never stop to think, they turn out the way they do because of the ideas and attitudes, feelings and emotions fixed in the subconscious mind. We are "oppressed by creeping vines. By stones, and things that have no real substance. We do not look to our own inner world, only wanting to know the outcome. But the outcome is determined by what is fixed within us. "The well is cleaned, but no one drinks from it. This is my heart's sorrow..."
