Django...

I appreciated Steve's honest expression as well...AND Louise's. I admire their courage. SUCH emotional integrity!

I really felt the thread was ALIVE! I started this thread to ask you a question since the other one is supposed to be closed.

Would you mind either posting or emailing me the Wilhelm version of the 5th line of hexagram 15? I have an interpretation of it that basically boils down to:

You may have to take the lead and say exactly what's on your mind. This is one of those times the principle of emotional honesty is more important than the principle of modesty.

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Val

Six in the fifth place means:

No boasting of wealth before one`s neighbor.
It is favorable to attack with force.
Nothing that would not further.

(Extracts of further explanation on the line:
..........
no boasting of his superiority but he must make certain of the people around him.The measures taken must be purely objective and in no way personally offensive. Thus modesty manifests itself even in severity.)

This is quite a free translation on Wilhelm's part, actually. Probably because the original version looked so hopelessly unenlightened to him

. The original goes something like:
'Not rich in your neighbour...'
or possibly even
'Not rich, use your neighbour.
Harvest to use invasion and subjugation,
Nothing that does not bring harvest.'

I think the point has to be that you go vigorously about getting what you need, that it's more important to have food on the table than to be virtuous. It strikes me as quite simple, like the rat-like creature of the title ideogram, which will just take what it needs from your grain stores.
