I edit academic books (humanities, science, medicine) on a freelance basis--I've been doing it for many years--and back in November for the first time in about 15 years I didn't have a new assignment lined up--none had materialized. I emailed around and finally got more work, but only a small assignment and now am looking for more work.

Back in November while waiting for work, I asked 'Will I get more copy-editing work soon before Christmas?' and I got hex 2 with changing lines 1,3,6, leading to hex 22.

So I've been wondering whether line 1 is the small assignment I got shortly afterwards, and whether the I Ching is saying, 'Continue on as normal, prepare for the winter with your family, and that Christmas will be as it is', i.e., that we will make Christmas for our children as beautiful as we can and that's what's important. But I feel that maybe more is being said here?

What do y'all think?

Hi Compass,

To answer first to your other post, I believe that it must have been just accidental that nobody replied to your original post. Even if people viewed it, they obviously couldn't reply at the time (or later) and your thread somehow was left behind.

The changing lines are not promising for any new big work, and neither is 22.
Lines 2.3 and 2.6 sound quite odd here.
2.3 advises keeping one's brilliance concealed, and warns against going after government/public/royal service.
2.6 speaks of old enemies continuing to fight an old battle.
Except if the lines refer to the content of your recent small work? (eg litigation?)
Maybe you can figure out what they refer to.

Sorry the forum passed by your reading. That's awful!

Hexagram 22 is a good hexagram to describe editing, since it has to do with refinement of the details . . . Hexagram 22 is your relating hexagram -- the context.

The counsel given in the lines is a little perplexing, but maybe the most important thing is the warning given by line 2.6 not to become involved in power struggles. Also, according to The I Ching for Writers, by Sarah Jane Sloane, line 2.6 suggests that you are not being properly receptive to the Creative. Wait and listen for what the Creative is trying to tell you.

I am thinking that this is the holiday season and it's a good time to take a break from the relentless pressures of freelance work and celebrate the holidays!

2.1.3.6 > 22

Agree with Ginnie, 22 refers to your question, it describes the work of copy editing. I get this a lot myself, the question is directly mentioned/reflected in the relating hex.

In Hex 2 the Mare quietly perseveres and follows the lead of others, old friends not new ones.
Look for work with your existing contacts, in a low key way. They may want to toss you some work or have some "leads" for you.

2.1 Be able to take a hint.

2.3 Hidden lines and... Maybe you can help finish someone else's work they are too busy for.

2.6 Hang in. Don't sell yourself short in desperation, undercut yourself in price. You want work that can sustain you, that endures.

I didn't know h22 was the editing hexagam and I didn't know about Sloane's book--I'm going to go check it out. Thanks very much! :bows:

I find that very fascinating and great proof of how the I Ching goes right to the heart of the matter every time.

That's what kind of happend since I did the reading. I was given a couple of assignments to sustain me through Christmas, as well as the other half of an assignment that wasn't finished a month ago.

My main concern was having enough money to help get the family through Christmas, but after talking it over with my wife, we agreed to have a simple year for the kids--keep it special but not extravagant--that to me spoke of h22--the appearance of beauty. We just knew what needs to be done and didn't get worked up about it. :)

And the I Ching is right about not selling myself short--there is the desire to change, but to make it a worthy change. I had asked a follow-up question as to whether I should think about changing career and got 64.2 -> 35: don't cross the river out of fear or anxiousness, which I thought was great advice.

Thanks again for your advice. :bows:
