Hi all! Long time since I've been on. Hope this message finds you all well, happy and healthy!

My daughter accidentally left one of the hamsters cages open this morning and I have a Winter White Dwarf hammie cruising the house. To say the least, the kids are upset. I had to drive them to school due to the search and my daughter's hysterical crying.

When asking the Yijing to show me if I find the hammie, I received 53UC. We'll find him... Just going to take a while. (Hoping not too long. I would prefer to find a living hamster)

When I asked Where I might find Tobias, I recieved 16UC. Can anyone shed light on an approximate location within the house that I might find my little Toby??

May I suggest that you take a deep breath and center yourself. Read the hex aloud and thoughtfully from your favorite translation, three times. See if there are any phrases or words that leap out at you, (or at least step forward).

The nuclear hex is 39 - in your situation I might want to check nooks and crannies in the bathroom or kitchen? ...reference to (things that might) hold things together (like a cupboard?), and floods...

Taking a breath is fabulous advice. Been looking for him for the last 5 hours. Going to take your advice and give it another go in the kitchen and bathrooms. I'm thinking I should give the laundry room another go too.

It's noon here in New York. Hamsters are more active at night. If I can't find him durin the day, I'm going to sit very still tonight and see where he pops out from.

Thank you so much

In a similar situation my granddaughter put food in a container that the hammie could get into and not get out of - a bowl with steepish slick sides and a ramp up from the outside - and left it overnight.

Where might I find Tobias?
16 unchanging

In a place like a hen's nest. Put his cage on the floor so that he can easily return to it for food and water. Check mops and other such places of concealment. Put crumpled newspaper in a box on its side so he can hide in it. I have heard of hamsters falling into waste paper baskets.

Luckily, Toby's cage was on one of those shelving units that look like a ladder leaning against the wall. I have two other dwarf male hams on there, a male rat and two male gerbils. I keep the boys with the boys. So I know he didn't fall into any waste baskets, being he was low and no baskets were near him.

I put his cage on the floor in between the living room, dining room and kitchen so he can find it. His bedding is a good four days old, so it has his scent on it. I even took out his favorite female teddy bear hamster, Trixie out (who happens to be in heat- which is good as far as scent goes) and he didn't come wobbling like he often does.

As little as he is, he has been taught how to climb stairs as a means for exercise. I'm going to go through the upstairs once again.

Thank you both. If any more ideas come to you, please pass them along.

Rinda's suggestion about a container he can't get back out of sounds really good - a pot or bowl that's taller than Toby could stretch to pull himself out of. (Can hamsters jump?)

53's lines are about the geese gradually ascending to higher ground...so could 53 mean climbing? Do hamsters climb?

Hexagram 16...this might be a stretch, but the feudal lords and army references in the Oracle section might suggest an organized plan. Feudal lords (I think) were the lords of smaller areas of a kingdom. Maybe you could close all the doors in the house, even closet doors, to try to prevent Toby from moving from room to room as you're searching for him (it's harder to catch a moving target, so anything that could keep him in one place will probably help). Then maybe you (the humans) could move from room to room, searching one at a time.

You might close all the doors, and then put food in ALL the rooms and closets, and see what gets eaten. Then you'll know what area he's in.

An unfortunate wrinkle might be if he's tiny enough to be able to wiggle underneath closed doors, if there are any gaps. You might have to seal those with rags or something.

None of this will help if he's not in a room with a door. Many houses have large areas of connected rooms without doors. In areas like that, maybe keep putting food out to entice him - and keep doing that until he comes for the food when someone happens to be watching?

I just thought wearily to myself, "Oh what a procedure this will be for them!" ALONG THOSE LINES...from what I learned on the 53 unchanging thread, it might be that finding him will be a procedure - one with a lot of steps you can't leave out, or one which might take some time.

Crossed posts - apparently Toby can climb. Would he climb curtains and then not be able to get down from them?

By the way...he's so cute! :D He will turn up.

Thank you Lisa! He's a little doll face.

Yes, hamsters climb. The dwarves don't climb as well as the larger Teddy Bear breed, but they also don't have a great range of stretching.

I truly figured he'd come out and go by where I keep the girls. He's a regular Casanova ;) All the doors have gaps, aside from the outside doors- so that limits the garage and outside.

He's truly nocturnal and I think you're on to something about having a plan. I was thinking that I'll take out one of my male gerbils, Tommy (whom is nicknamed the Devilish A**hole), because he is more alpha aggressive and he'll force him out of any hiding place. Meanwhile, the two kids and I will watch where Tommy goes. He'll stomp one of his feet if he finds another animal, prior to attacking. This could work with no carnage!

Isn't Hex 16 about music - do you have a guitar, piano or tuba he could hide in? - Liss

Hello Liss! <3

No. I can't say I have any of those items. However, with Christmas upon us, I do have a few musical snowglobes out and a singing Santa. I will search there now!

Haha - what about a stereo system or do they have favourite music they like to listen to?

Nope. Still didn't find him. I have two stereo systems... Didn't check the one in the basement. That would match up with what Rinda said about hutches or cabinets. Running down now!

Or do you have a piece of furniture or something belonging to ancestors?

No fireplace, no old furniture. The closest I come to either is the boiler and I tore that room up

Maybe ask again - maybe ask where is he today?
Hex 16 can be about dancing too - so maybe he's danced to somewhere else now.

Just asked, "Please show me where T is now" and got the same thing: 16UC

:eek:uch: Guess that's the Yijing's way of saying, "I mean it!"

So I guess I'm going to really have to get a real good understanding of hexagram 16!

Well I wonder if it's reflecting the situation - Tobias is out having fun no restraints, dancing around and leading you on a merry dance trying to find him.
I wonder if asking something more like - what is his exact location or what does it look like?

Holy Yijing Moley!!!

It's 2:45am here in New York. I cast 16UC twice in relation to my lost little Tobias. All of you guys provided me with fabulous advice... In fact, so fabulous, I FOUND HIM!!!!

16UC was everything you all said. I went back downstairs where the TV cabinet is. This is also where one of my stereo systems is located... And the clincher of this all, I asked my son to dust the shelves and his play station. When I went back to look for Toby, he was there... Amongst the feather duster!!

You were all correct in your location interpretation! Thank you again Rinda, Liss, Lisa and Pocossin! You brought my baby back xoxox

Yay! In a cabinet with feather-duster - about as close as possible to a nesting box in one's home! Yay Tom!
