Hi, I'm still figuring out what role the changing lines play in a hexagram. Does the hexagram we get remain primary and the changing lines add nuance? Do we study the lines or do they simply point to the morphed hexagram?

What about when we have more than one changing line? I asked a question regarding compatibility with someone who says we're missmatched and got

26.2.3.4.5.6>17

When there are that many chaning lines what does that indicate? Do we just go to the transformed hexagram? Is the answer simpler and straight-forward if there are no changing lines?

Would greatly appreciate some input to the issue of changing lines. Maybe there is a tutorial on this someone can point me to aswell and any comment on this particular reading welcome too.

Hilary addressed this in her recent Blog post here http://onlineclarity.co.uk/answers/

Also if you look through her Blog section, there's a tab above, there will likely be more entries on this . Also you may find a tutorial via taking her free course...click the 'Learn' tab above I think.

One basic way to get to an understanding with many moving lines is to make a sentence out of the 2 hexagrams you received. You got 26>17 Great accumulation of Following....? Hard to see with that combination , other times it's easier.

Yes I agree with so many lines moving the primary hexagram is virtually tipping over into the second one.

You get a feel on how to use lines over time and it's quite personal, so there isn't one 'rule' so to speak.

26.2.3.4.5.6>17 well my impression is this isn't a question of being mismatched.....the whole answer looks a picture of irresistible following. Lots of stored up feelings, holding back......tips over to devotion actually

you may not be old enough to remember this but if I had to attach a song to 26>17 it would be this

I could be wrong....it's just an impression.....heh but who is s/he kidding about a mismatch

Oh and not wishing to confuse you but look at the pattern the changing lines make. if all change lines are yang here there's hex 44, if all change lines were yin then you'd have 24. So 44 as what initiates the situation and 24 the way through the situation. Well it looks remarkably like infatuation...but that's just the change pattern not the answer...so the pattern is just a factor. Ignore that for now if it confuses you.

I have always thought that hex 26 implies a large quantity of uncomfortable and discordant feelings, and so that may be why she feels you are mismatched. That could very well be true, despite the attraction between the two of you right now.

I've had readings with sometimes all changing lines, usually for situations where there are large amounts of activity going on at once.

In any case, in addition to reading the lines in various translations I meditate on the trigrams according to their descriptions in the Shuo Kua. Doing this is often a lot better than the written material.

In Huang's translation, he gives advice for people who have trouble with multiple lines. "If there are five moving lines, consult only the other, nonmoving line"

Huang's translation is good to have around. It's less about "translation" and more about historical/cultural background to each hexagram and line, including allegories to the lives of King Wen and the Duke of Zhou. It's also written in easy-to-understand language.
