The 'maps', one for each pair, show the crossline patterns, nuclear hexagrams that changes resolve to, and more. All in glorious technicolour, and available now!

P.S. The man who did all the hard work on these suggested I make a quiet announcement without mentioning his name. Well, I've done that now, so

You're Welcome Soshin

As for Hilary she is not only the most exacting editor - Who BTW did a lot of work hammering me into shape and getting these maps sorted out and packaging them so nicely (plus writing a lot of the key!)

She also has an evil sense of humour which I like.

There Hilary - Got my own back

Kevin, these charts are stunningly beautiful! I am searching for a color laser printer to do them justice.

This work represents a line of inquiry which is unfamiliar to me. Obviously it summarizes a huge amount of structural analysis, but I'm still not sure what to make of it. Is there a context I should know about as I study these?

Do the charts have something to do with Karcher's "Total I Ching"? For some reason, this book has taken forever to be published in the US, and I saw my first copy in a bookstore only last week. Or are they the fruit of some other investigation?

Right now, all I can say is they remind me of exotic butterflies. Can you help me learn their secrets?

Glad you like them? thanks.

No, there is nothing new in these maps? Well nothing newer than late Han which dreadfully modern

.

I have carefully avoided Stephen?s concepts in these maps as I wanted them to be universal and not to represent his approach alone. Though there is much in his work which I like a lot.

So they represent basic patterns.

The idea Stephen had in the Total I Ching was to first present the hexagrams in their King Wen pairs as per the eighth wing and then to write the number of the hexagram that line would make if it changed in the position where the line was. So hexagram 4 has lines changing to other hexagrams as follows:

Line 6 to Hx 7
Line 5 to Hx 59
Line 4 to Hx 18

Threshold (between inner and outer worlds)

Line 3 to Hx 18
Line 2 to Hx 23
Line 1 to Hx 41

Underneath each hexagram number is its Nuclear Hexagram.

If you take any nuclear hexagram and then the nuclear hexagram of that you will get Hexagrams 1; 2; 63; or 64? in either one or two steps. So I have coloured the hexagram numbers to show which of the four that hexagram ends up at.

There are four different types of colouring pattern used for the sequence of pairs? this reflects the four different types of patterns the line changes make. You will find notes on this in white text under each pair.

Hopefully they allow an easy way of exploring many different relationships between hexagrams (their text) and various qualities they each might have.

If you read the ?key? carefully and the little white notes in each pair there are many pointers as to what they might show.

Because they have changed considerably from the ones I posted before I am attaching one here to show folk what they are now like.

I am more than happy to answer any questions about what they may or may not indicate? but there are things there which I do not yet understand properly ? like the ?Square Games? or Fan Yao discussed elsewhere by others in this site.

As for the US version of the Total I Ching? I have seen a little of the new text? there are many, many, improvements and changes. However I see that Stephen?s thinking has moved toward the Fan Yao idea of ?Cross line Omen?s? in the last thread on this board so I do not know quite what stage of his thinking will be in his new book? But I suspect it will be his latest thoughts. Apparently it will be published in December of this year.

All the best

Thank YOU, Kevin! Everything you wrote above is very helpful. All I have to do now is think about it a little. It's probably obvious, but I'm a verbal kind of guy. Give me an old text, no matter how obscure or garbled, and I'm on familiar ground. But there is this other dimension of the Yi based on structural affinities and relationships that, frankly, I do not understand and have neglected. Time to stretch.

Somebody predicted if I rejoined Clarity's Friends, I might learn something. Imagine! Maybe she was right.

Thanks again, Kevin, for your valuable diagrams. I imagine I may have a question or two for you before long.
