Is there a special significance to "3 years" and "10 years"? I think Wilhelm has said 10 years represents a complete cycle. Is there a special meaning - other than the literal one - to 3 years? I'm looking at 29.6.

Thank you,
Rosada

"three years" -- the time required for negative influences to dissipate
"ten years" -- a period that is completed by greater maturity

Yes. 7. They won't give away the secret. You were given the answer. You'll just have to... ahem... figure out the question.

This thread needs to be resuscitated :) I have just cast line 53.5 about a health issue and would be very interested in understanding if the three years mentioned in it point at a specific time line. I've gone through the memorizing the I Ching thread for 53, and also looked at other sources, without however understanding what sort of span this indicates. Anyone have any conclusive experience with the Yi's time frames?

Mostly - eep, this is one I should include in my glossary, but I don't know the answer either - or nothing better than '3 is a long time, and 10 is a complete cycle'. '3' in general seems to be a way of saying 'several' or 'again and again' - think of 7.2 or 6.6 or 49.3.

Here are the examples we have to work with:
3 years: 13.3, 29.6, 47.1, 53.5, 63.3/64.4 (what Tom said fits well with all of those!)
10 years: 3.2, 24.6, 27.3.

The ten year ones: an enormously long time that feels like forever. And maybe there is a sense that you have got yourself into a cycle at its beginning and now must see it through? Nothing to be done until you have travelled through? In 24 and 27 this is a big disaster from which it will take an unavoidably long time to recover; in 3 it's just a serious, long-term commitment. In all cases, probably longer than you would like.

What often makes sense to me is what I had read here about 3 years (by Brad?) being the time mourning rituals lasted . . Another way I have to see it is like a movement in 3 gestures: beginning, climax, dissipation. It might be any amount of time but it's usually characterized by this pattern.

10 years I often see as a whole era, or perhaps generation. It's a different kind of movement in that, like a decade, its prime trait is the same yet it might include many smaller movements evolving within it and lacks the succinct, tightly packed shape of the 3 years count

another 2 cents

I asked the I Ching, "what is the meaning of 3 years?" and got 17.4 - 3.
17.4 talks about having a following you don't want to encourage. I think this fits with Tom's observation that 3 has to do with letting negative influences dissipate but it gave me the further insight that it is often we who have created the negative by putting out an idea or intention we don't wish to continue. Like you tell your phone number and then when you change it it takes awhile before people stop trying to reach you on the old one.So I now think of three years as meaning it may take awhile to clear up a wrong impression.

I asked what is meant by 10 years and received 8.1 - 3.
This also appears to me to confirm Tom's idea of something taking a long time to reach maturity. In hex 8 the first line says to form a union you first have to create yourself, so I see that as pointing to ten years as meaning you have to start from scratch. I think this fits when you read the hexagrams where ten appears and plug in the idea that its saying you must start - sometimes all over again - at the very beginning.

For your reference

If ten is regarded as one complete unit, five will be in the middle and ten at the end; then three means not long but not short either, while seven is comparatively long but before the end.

From the viewpoint of paraphrasing the text, every time mentioned in the text has its specific meaning, which is conducted according to the significance of the hexagram concerned, its text and the context from a holistic view, etc.

Jian of 53 signifies ‘to progress gradually and sequentially’ and is exampled as a female getting married, step by step, according to the formal procedure, wherein line 2 is the female engaged to the masculine line 5.
53.5: the female hasn’t been pregnant for three years; at last nothing can defeat (her), signifying line 2 has undergone the interference at positions 3 and 4; it finally gets married with line 5 (after moving forward along the timeline by 3 steps).

Tong Ren of 13 is signified as ‘to build fellowship’, wherein the feminine line 2 is the one that the masculine lines intend to make friend with, but it is firmly in correlation with the masculine line 5.
13.3 withholds (from action) for three years, signifying it has to wait till it reaches position 5 (by moving 3 steps ahead) where the vast army wins (the battle) and manages to join forces.

習xi of 習xi坎Kan, hexagram 29, signifies to review what has been learnt. 29.6 is put into the (dark) jail and (release is) not (possibly) to be obtained within three years, signifying it must take the lesson of what it has experienced in 29, and then it can see the sun at midday at 30.2 (three steps from 29.6).

In my opinion, the time mentioned in the text is not only a subject of when but also how, i.e. the right position and the right action.

Also for your reference, 10 is signified as ‘the difficulty of initiation will be finally overcame’ at 3.2, while 7 is taken for one cycle of a hexagram at 24.

Tuck
