What does "going on meets the rain" mean? (from 38.6)

Any experience of this line and its meaning?

Wilhelm: As one goes, rain falls; then good fortune comes.
Hatcher: In going, greet the rain / After this, all is well

So encountering rain is a positive event as one would expect for an agricultural people. The constituent trigrams of 38 are ☱ ☲ ☵ ☲ , which may be read as lakes limited, water limited. Line 6 is the end of such limitation, so things are not as bad as they seem and have been.

Pocossin,

I understand how the first two trigrams you list are "constituent trigrams" of 38, but not the last two.

"Constituent trigrams" is a new phrase for me. What exactly are they?

The constituent trigrams of a hexagram are the lower trigram (lines 1,2,3), the lower nuclear trigram (lines 2,3,4), the upper nuclear trigram (lines 3,4,5), and the upper trigram (lines 4,5,6). I am one of the minority who believe that such visual features of the hexagrams explain the origin of the appended text.

Whenever I come across 'rain' in Yi (I also remember it on 50.3, not sure about others) I always think of hexagram 40 with its release of tension, relief, forgiving, letting go - internal, or external, or, oftentimes, both ;)

The rain is salvation in 50.3 as well - getting that fire out is the only thing that will save that tasty pheasant.

hey Brad,

ah so the pheasant is still salvageable, you say? I always thought that it had burnt away, but at least one could get a hold of those scorching handles again . . that's an interesting take though, thanks! :bows:

Only if it rains. But lesson learned.
Gotta get a craftsman instead of an artist to design the next cauldron.

Interesting. I am working on designing a new cauldron today. Just came online to clarity for a break.

And Rodaki, I like your Campbell quote. It helps me to forgive the inner devils who have recently been troubling me. Perhaps "meeting the rain" will cool off some of that hot devil energy.
