Definitely get the sence of group concsiousness rising here.
I seem to have several friends going through positive transformations lately. The desired job coming through, money being made available, etc. and it's causing me to realize how much easier it is to experience good fortune when your friends are going through a good time too. Like, if I've just fallen I love but my best friend is still alone and or worse in a bad relationship, it's hard for me to fully experience my joy. So perhaps line one is the teacher backing up line two to support him in lightening up so we can all be happy. As teacher role models being happy, line two becomes more bold in experiencing life?

My understanding

I see this hexagram as understood through the meaning of the trigrams as a joyous response to servitude. Going to work and enjoying it through developing a good work ethic. Being inspired to nurture and help others by your own cheerfulness. This sort of dynamic would get you recognised by your superiors at work and with any luck inspire them to approach you to suggest a promotion/pay rise. Am I being too simplistic here?

yes.

The PAIR of 19,41 covers issues of the use of negative feedback, getting closer to. The low approaches the high, the high defers to that approach (allows it). The high does not approach the low as such. In the binary ordering of lake-based hexagrams we have:

19,41,60,61,54,38,58,10

We can use the same forms of interpretation here as we can with the full binary sequence such that 10 is an exaggeration of 19 (a complement rather than opposite in that a complement reflects a relabelling of an expression, thus 10 is a high energy expression of 19 where the casual approach is now on a rigid path, demanding intense concentration on actions as one is being watched as one moves along that path. IOW our approach has become formal

19 - with self-reflection comes absolute trust in another/others
10 - with self-reflection comes absolute trust in oneself (singlemindedness)
)

IF we focus on the 19,41 pair, In 41 this focus is on distilliation, concentration, and as such has an alchemical focus on purification that, if it fails, elicits the putrid (literal 'decrease')

If we review the spectrum of 19 we find that, for example, the infrastructure of 19 is described by analogy to 04 and so a general aire of socialisation and issues of the manner in approaching a 'teacher' and so the 'high'.

The opposite of 19 is 33 and IT covers issues of competitive enticement, one is being drawn in rather than approaching on one's own accord. (the PAIR of 31,33 covers enticement overall, 31 being cooperative. This pair is the opposite of the 19,41 pair)

etc etc etc (As in LOTS more information on the hexagram - it spectrum alone is described by analogies to all 64 hexagrams)

o Nine in the second place means:
Joint approach.
Good fortune.
Everything furthers.

When the stimulus to approach comes from a high place, and when a man has the inner strength and consistency that need no admonition, good fortune will ensue. Nor need the future cause any concern. He is well aware that everything earthly is transitory, and that a descent follows upon every rise, but need not be confused by this universal law of fate, Everything serves to further. Therefore he will travel the paths of life swiftly, honestly, and valiantly.

IC+ 19.2

Line 2
"Fate is always an influence but all opposition here is weak and even beneficial. Keep going."

One aspect of 19 is that it manifests being drawn into darkness; the observed deferring of the high to the low is a trick; the tiger WILL bite but in its own time. As such there is a negative 'fate' element present but currently things seem to be fine and we can ignore the distraction of such thoughts (24 covers the returning from distractions to the 'correct' path - thoughts on fate, and so distractions, may cause us to slow down or reconsider our approach)

19 is such an important - and positive, I think! - hexagram I want to review what we're doing so far.

19.1

Cooperating with others will put you in a stronger position. Be determined to do what you feel is right.
-Dening

And all things whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive ..(Matthew 21:22)
-Murphy

If you support higher goals, you can be assured of support from higher forces and friends on your wave length. Seek them out.
-Leichtman
---

19.2
The balance is about to swing in your favour. The efforts you have made are beginning to show results. Go ahead with whatever you have in mind. You will get the support you need.
- Dening

Your close attunement with your higher self on this matter will magnify your efforts and impel you toward success. Don't change your plans.
-Leichtman

God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, knowledge, and joy... (Eccleslastes)

Rosada,

I admire the systematic yet flexible way you are approaching this whole process of examining/memorizing the hexagrams, and I especially admire that you have not let yourself get knocked off track! I follow along and often think I've got the jist of things under my belt, only to come up with a hexagram that I need to clarify. I go back to these discussions and more often than not get a renewed picture. Thank you so much for doing this.

Me too, what Rinda says...
I also wonder, have you memorized the hexagrams up to now? Has it been helpful in that way?

Me 5.

It is always very interesting to look at the opposite hexagram. For 19 this is 33. So I agree with mcgarr, about opening up to what is around you.
Also being open to a person, not only surroundings. To a fate, to possibilities. Letting go of reserve.

There is another meaning of the character lin: 'mourning'. That always intrigues me. It could be simple, the character is a person who looks down, so mourning is standing around the bed or coffin or grave, looking down on the deceased, and the figure in the picture really looks as if that is what he is doing.
View attachment 161 (standing figure at right, at left a big eye and below that - probably -three people, subjects)
But I think it has also to do with the way of 'nearing', being open to someone without asking any reason from the other for that. Then it is my own quality to be open, and not a reaction to something the other does.

Yea team!

Thank you for the picture, LiSe. If you have them for the other lines, I for one would love to see them.

I must admit I have not kept up with memorizing a line a day. The few hexagrams where I tried to use each line to create a cohesive story (particularly with hexagram 4) have stuck in my mind but for the most part I am just becoming more familiar with the hexagram's meaning. I am much more aware now of the meanings of the line positions, like how tricky the third position is, and the feeling of relief when you get your toe across the border from earth to heaven in line four. As Rinda says, I'm finding a big reward is as our study continues more and more frequently the questions one asks result in a hexagram we have already analyzed. I then can check the hexagram index and read my own advice. It's been like my higher self talking directly to me! Perhaps others have tried this. If you haven't, I sure encourage people to post their own daily experiences with the lines on this thread because even if your interpretation doesn't jibe with the traditional meaning, you may find you've posted the insight you personally need later on.

To quickly find past Memorization threads, go to the Hexagram Index, click the hexagram you want and then ALL the lines.

Six in the third place means:
Comfortable approach.
Nothing that would further.
If one is induced to grieve over it,
One becomes free of blame.

Things are going well for a man: he achieves power and influence. But in this lies the danger he may relax, and confident of his position, allow the easygoing, careless mood to show itself in his dealings with other people, This woud inevitably be harmful. But there is possibility of a change of mood. If he regrets his mistaken attitude and feels the responcibility of an influential position he frees himself from faults.

It is not a picture of a line, but of the hexagram name. As it has been written long ago, when it still looked like a picture.

Thanks adding the pictures to the other hexagrams, LiSe, they are an aid to understanding and to memorizing.

I think of line 3 here as the "Do as I say, not as I do!" line. It seems to discribe that tricky third day of a New Year's Resolution and one is starting to waffle. Or to be more personal, yesterday I was reading a book written to help with sugar addiction - while eating a chocolate scone.

That does sound like Neptune above Venus. :)
A love or a beloved (Venus) disappears into dreamland or another realm that is not physical (Neptune).
Or love becomes more impersonal, so there is a loss (sacrifice?) of personal love.
Perhaps it can also represent the opposite, a dream or ideal love/lover that never materialises.
But I think it has also to do with the way of 'nearing', being open to someone without asking any reason from the other for that
That fits too. Unconditional love/openness.

Six in the fourth place:
Complete approach.
No blame.

When the three lower lines indicate rise to power and influence, the three upper lines show the attitude of persons in higher position towards those of lower rank for whom they procure influence. Here is shown the open-minded approach of a person of high rank to a man of ability whom he draws into his own circle, regardless of class prejudice. This is very favorable.

Here we have the most intimate mutual approach of the upper and the lower trigram. The place is appropriate - a yielding line in a yielding place. The line is in the relationship of correspondence to the nine at the beginning.

You have advanced to a strong position of influence but have remained modest, co-operative, and helpful to your subordinates. Maintaining your modest attitude while using your influence to help subordinate serves you well, and no blame will attach to your efforts.

Sixth in the fifth place means:
Wise approach.
This is right for a great prince.
Good fortune.

A prince, or anyone in a leading position, must have the wisdom to attracted to himself people of ability who are expert in directing affairs. His wisdom consists both in selecting the right people and in allowing those chosen to have a free hand without interference from him. For only through such self-restraint will he find the experts needed to satisfy all of his requirements.

The wisdom lies in the fact that the weak line in the central place of the ruler knows and appreciates the strong, efficient man in the second place, with whom it has a relationship of correspondence. The bond uniting the two is their common central course.

Now what should we be doing, thinking, talking about to activate the Sage coming up in 19.6?
Since this thread is dedicated to Hilary's dad, Bruce's dad and Chris' mom, perhaps they have some thought or story to share?

Actually now that I think about it, it would be kinda neat if anyone who has a story to tell about their favorite teacher or sage would post on 19.6.

Thank you, sparhawk!

When I get 19.6, I'm generally less than enthusiastic about approaching whatever it is I'm asked or called to do. But I do it out of the kindness of my heart.

Fan Yao of 41.6 is the result. "Not diminishing, increasing it. Without fault. Determination, auspicious. Harvest: proceeding probing. Acquiring servants, without home." Acquiring servants because you do for others ("To rule truly is to serve" ~ Wilhelm 42). Without a home because you had to leave your comfort zone to do it.

I'm beginning tothink 19 is far more about patronage than teaching. I always get 17 for teacher/sage related stuff. I'm not keen on receiving this hexagram, and i can't exactly say why. Seems theres no substance to it somehow, which ties in with Martins astrology stuff. On reflection I think I agree with Bruce that it can be about doing the right thing out of kindness - but theres an element of patronage in it.

Hmm am I the only one with an irrational grudge against certain hexagrams, lol

Well, Trojan, you may remember when I saw 19 looming awhile back I posted my uneasyness about navigating this hexagram. I was afraid all hell would break loose. Turns out the clarity board has been in fine shape, the crisis materialized in my own backyard:
I have been visiting my neighbor every morning to be a nanny to her two sons whom I adore. Originally I thought they were my fairytale fantasy come true. Charming little cottage, chickens and goats and a vegetable garden and the two beautiful little boys. Only thing that seemed slightly amiss was the unending clutter, the goats in the house, the diapers piled up in the sink. But I just figured I had different standards and set about tidying up the place. Thought I could be a great role model, right? Superior man without limits in his tolerance and protection of the people? Supreme success? Not quite...the more I cleaned the house, praised the boys and loved my friend the mother, the more her story has come out. Turns out the big secret is the usual one. The father is an alcoholic. Lately it's been getting worse and yesterday came the big blow up. Seems that since I've been with the children, my girlfriend has been able to devote her energies to running her website business. In less than a month she has enough clients to become self supporting and thus to question whether she needs to live with a crazy person. Anyway, she confronted the husband and of course, being an alcoholic the first thing he did was to deny he had a problem. She took him out to the barn and showed him the dead pig the other pigs had killed for food because the husband had just been going out to the barn to drink, but hadn't fed the animals. Then she got out the shotgun and killed the five remaining pigs. The husband left, but she called me this morning to say he's back and they are talking. We shall see. Meanwhile, yeah, there is something weird about this hexagram. I'm now going to think of it as..
19. No Good Deed Goes Unpunished.

Six at the top means:
Greathearted approach.
Good fortune no blame.

A sage who has put the world behind him and who in spirit has already withdrawn from life may, under certain circumstance, decide to return once more to the here and now and to approach other men. this means great good fortune for the men whom he teaches and helps. And for him this greathearted humbling of himself is blameless.

No, you're not. I vote to strike hex 9 from the Yi, line 6 particularly.

Since we are at it, unless I get all those young sisters in 54, I want it out of the sequence... I promise to treat them with love and respect. :D Hmmm, perhaps I should move to Utah...
