Do you think it's possible that hexagram 12 Stagnation is related to mercury retrograde in some way?

Yes, regressive forces are uppermost.

In your case

Mercury RX is a great time for writers to go back to their work and edit. You can find more mistakes during that time, and you might also come up with ideas to spice up your writing, make it stronger. It's also a good period to clean out files, closets, return to unfinished projects and reviewing them, spend more time mentally re-viewing things that have happened in the past, get in touch with old friends, and schedule class reunions.

Also reminds me of Surah 114.4

4 مِن شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ
4 From the mischief of the Whisperer (of Evil), who withdraws (after his whisper),-

This "withdraws" is retrograde.

Thanks Pocossin! What a beautiful insight: "regressive forces are uppermost"! The heavens are literally stalled in a way, when Mercury is Retrograde. Equally so in hexagram 12.

I better get my red pen out and start editing! :D x

Do you think it would be a bit foolhardy to equate some of the hexagrams with planetary/astrological influences since they're entirely different disciplines?

No, I don't. The Chinese themselves make associations between cosmic features and the Yi.

I associate the trigram Xun and the fifth line of the hexagram with Mercury, and have cosmic associations for all the hexagrams, but I usually don't uses them in readings because I wouldn't be understood and because I find the Yi's associations rich aplenty. Hexagram 12, for example, I take to be the Stem yin wood, the time in fall and winter when plants lose vitality and die.
