Messages and phone calls

Dear all,

Which lines would you consider as referring to or predicting messages and phone calls? Besides hex 58 uc, that I would interpret as talking.

I would really appreciate your experience. Or if there is already a thread about this, please let me know…

Thank you.

Well, I’m asking because I sometimes try to frame questions in Yis own language. I remember there was a thread about meetings, “meeting the lord” etc. So I was wondering if there are lines about receiving messages. If anyone knows I would be grateful.

Thank you.

Hexagrams featuring birds might be, as birds are considered messengers. 30, for instance, see LiSe https://www.yijing.nl/hex/hex_30.html

But this is a far cry in my opinion from saying hexagram 30 or 58 is saying you should expect a phone call. Maybe, or maybe it's one of the other things those could mean. It also depends on what you're asking, but that's probably obvious. You won't over-simplify, I assume.

43 might be another one - making a declaration. Not sure I've actually seen it that way, though.

The line about the cangue (21.6) might be another, a warning about failing to hear. It can also mean carrying a burden as a punishment, maybe unnecessarily.

Thank you.

I think Ginnie wrote somewhere that line 38.2, meeting a master in the lane, could refer to receiving a phone call.

Hi Gnichi
In my experience, every line or every consultation conveys a message. Yi is not that fussy about whether you frame the question in it's language or not. With every enquiry you make all you have to do is pick up the receiver and listen.

If there are specific questions framed, such as "How will X contact me ?" then maybe you will see the connection to phone calls or other methods of messaging that will be appropriate to your answer at the time of asking. Just because someone else potentially interpreted 38.2, say, as getting a phone call there is no reason to expect this line to mean the same for you should you get it in a consultation.

For me each reading is never to be treated as prescriptive. Setting out with the idea that a line or a hexagram means a certain thing can be really limiting towards the message that is being conveyed by Yi. You, from the start, are cutting out possibilities of what the communication may actually be looking to say. E.g. Hex 58 meaning just 'talking' limits wider implications of stimulation, persuasion, joy, pleasure, self-expression, exchange, being seen, being heard etc.

Take Care

Thank you for taking the time to reply so thoughtfully. I tend to agree that consulting the I Ching is a personal experience.
