I'm sorry if this was discussed already, but can I ask what's the most times anyone's gotten the same hexagram in a row? 4-5 times seems like a lot to me...

4 to 5 times is a lot! May I ask what method you were using....was it a computer generated response?

Using coins! And not even the same exact coins. I mean it seems statistically impossible.

Is it an error?

Hi
just a couple of things to consider, was it asked the same question every time? if so then it may be trying to tell you something. I have moved over from coins to marbles and the answers seem more appropriate to the question asked ( good or bad). Hilary uses the marble method, and it has the same statistical odds as the yarrow sticks - without the mess and time. Just remember to be calm, without any distractions and in a good frame of mind when you ask the questions.

If you intend to use marbles make sure they are all the same size. If you are stuck I do have some spare ones if you can't find any.

It is alot. If you were asking different questions each time then its likley there is an overriding factor the Yi is making you aware of above and beyond the question.

Thanks for the answers. In this case I was asking about the same situation, just each day's progressions about it, or even sometimes checking in more than once in a day. I got 50 as an unchanging hexagram, or as the second hexagram, 4-5 times in a row.

Aaack! I got 50 again today as a second hexagram.

I don’t know exactly the lesson I’m supposed to learn (obviously), but I have to say, especially in the area of career, I find it very difficult to just let things run their course. It seems irresponsible to me not to take care of particulars. And it runs counter to all the things I was taught: “God helps those who help themselves.” “If you want something done right, do it yourself.” Etc. etc. It’s not a lack of trust I struggle with (I think), it’s more that I think I have to do *some* kind of effort to put some grist in the mill so to speak. I mean what do you do, sit back and wait for job offers to come to you unbidden? This (out-of-the-blue offers) has actually happened before to me when doing readings a lot about career, but isn’t it selfish and presumptuous to think it would happen again? Sometimes I feel like I don’t know where the boundary is with “wu wei.”

:stir: <-- me (confused) with my cauldron

Theres no need to suppose there is any 'lesson i need to learn'. These repeated 50s may just be pointing out how things are - ie cooking, perhaps the topic of your question is undergoing a transformative process - as in cooking that is. I can't see that 50 particularly means 'do nothing' but rather watch the pot - ie your situation, theres alot of different ingredients in there coming together, you can't rush but you can give it a stir now and then

The IMAGE for 50. The Caldron advises:

Thus the superior man consolidates his fate by making his position correct.

What does this mean? Consider the sequence, consider that 49. Revolution told us,

On your own day you are believed.
Supreme success,
Furthering through perseverance.
Remorse disappears.

The superior man
Sets the calendar in order
And makes the seasons clear.

This sounds to me like the superior man has figured out a lot of things by now. Maybe the experience of building The Well together with his neighbors (48. The superior man encourages the people at their work, and exhorts them to help one another.) has caused him to recognize what his true talents are, what his place is in the divine scheme of things. So now that one has seen who they really are and what they can accomplish one dares to look to the future. 49. sounds like a good astrologer who can project what is likely to happen in the future, thus the setting the calendaar in order. Now having seen what the future trends are, what is likely, what is possible, 50 now encourages one to "consolidate his fate by making his position correct." Thus if one can see that with their talents and opportunities it seems they are fated for a certain thing - a certain job - they ought not just sit back and do nothing, but should make sure it will really happen, "consolidate their fate", by "making their position correct", that is, get the education that would qualifiy them for such a position or just apply for the job, anyway, don't just wait to be discovered.
