Good morning! In November We are relocating for 6 months. I’m conflicted. It’s a great opportunity to broaden my skills. But, My friends, and life coaches are here. I know no one in the new place. I asked the IChing to give me an image of my new environment. Received CONDUCT with lines 3 and 4 leading to 9 RESTRAINT. It made me gasp because I’ll be treading on the tail of the tiger, and line 3 indicates I’m going to be inadequate in some way which could end in disaster. Line 4 however says have courage; it will be okay if I proceed with caution. RESTRAINT seems to imply I will be restrained from expanding my skill. Does anyone see a different interpretation... perhaps a more positive one? :eek:

Thank you for offering your thoughts on the cast.

I more or less agree with your interpretation except I do not think 9 here means restraint from expanding your skill. Remember the relating hexagram is not 'the future' but more the entire context of the question that surrounds the answer in the primary. It's interesting you have 9 and 10 together although I don't have many thoughts on the sequence.

If we see 9 here as where you are coming from then this is something you await with care, a situation to have patience about, looking after small things each and every day like the small farmer's daily work of tending to his crops and cattle.

I think perhaps this describes your attitude to the change. You can't quite see yet what may come but you are making preparations anyway.

10.3.4 that takes you to the 9 ?

You asked for a picture, an image of your new environment which for me is somewhat vague in meaning. Not sure if you mean quite an objective picture of the environment or a picture of you within that environment ? I'm taking it as a picture of you within it as that is what we care about more than a description of the place.

Anyway you're treading a tiger's tail so what's the tiger here ? I guess it's the relocation itself. But it's only for 6 months it isn't permanent and what you are doing is all part of a larger whole. You are the farmer in hexagram 9 who is tending his work but must go step on the tiger's tail on order to proceed !

If you tread carefully you won't get bitten and in line 4 you are terribly careful and you have success. In line 3 you presume on your strengths too much and GNASH he gets his teeth into you

:eek::eek::eek:

Very often with 2 change lines I think there is a choice. Are you going to be like the person in line 3 or in line 4 ?

The change patterns here are 62 yang and 61 yin so this idea of great care and circumspection is reflected in the very pattern the change lines make.

In 61/62 pair there's a contrast between feeling as a small bird in a big sky in 62 and fully occupying all the space in your inner world in 61.

I think it will be okay but you do need to take care you don't bite off more than you can chew (line 3) and one way you do this perhaps is by making sure you take your inner world with you (61 yin pattern and 9) What I mean by 'taking your inner world with you' is that as a way of coping with strange environments people need time where they keep very much their own purpose in mind, recreate their homes, recreate their habits by which I mean take your habits with you, take familiar things with you, carry on very much as you might at home. So if for example you go for a run at 10am at home do the same there. If you write a journal each day also do that when you are there.

If you take care of yourself with attention to these kinds of things I think you will cope better.

I also find 10.4 is generally somewhat humorous along the lines of :eek: 'I just made it'.

So I don't think it's a bad cast but you do need to practise self care to a greater degree whilst you are away. Might you plan ahead for example and arrange calls with your life coaches at the same time that you would normally see them at home ? I think doing this kind of thing as well as the smaller domestic things like making your bedroom feel like home, might save you from really feeling over whelmed at times (10.3).

I think different people would be able to see different things in this cast. One thing to think carefully about is in what area might you run the risk of taking on too much, biting off more than you can chew ? I'm seeing the risk lying in your coping capacity is that where you would see it ?

Thank you Trojina for your insight and taking time to respond. I had completely overlooked the 10 -> 9 sequential relationship. As you said, lines 3 and 4 do seem like either/or choices. And emotionally they feel like my roller coaster reactions... one minute :) Yes! I can do this (line 4) the next :eek: Oh No! What am I doing? (Line 3) Your counsel is spot on, I do have morning rituals that are grounding and will bring them with me. AND It may be possible to have teleconferences with my life coaches ... that’s very creative advice. I’ll look into that. Thank you.
