My wife and I are planning to move our growing family to Santa Fe, NM, most likely next summer. This is something we've been mulling and planning since last December, when we took a road trip with our son (who turned 4 while we were there) and fell in love with the place. We live in Los Angeles, are expecting our second child in February, and in spite of our solidly middle class jobs in education, we cannot afford to buy a home here anymore. So we've set our sights on SF, not only because it's more affordable and because we just love it there but also because I have formed a sort of connection with a Zendo that is located there, whose guiding teacher is someone I would like to work with more closely in my meditation practice. So that's the background.

The rub is, though my wife can most likely find a job with relative ease, I will probably have a harder time. I'm preparing materials and getting my ducks in a row to apply for a couple of different teaching positions out there (I have oodles of experience and advanced degrees and can teach both at the HS and college level), but there is no guarantee that these jobs will even become available, let alone hire me to fill them. So we are looking into the possibility of my taking a year off of FT work to focus on taking care of the new baby while doing gig work like tutoring and/or academic counseling (also not guaranteed to yield up much income). We have enough saved that we can realistically buy a house and still have some decent savings to offset the financial hardship that would ensue, but it is still a major risk.

With all of this in mind, I asked Yi: "Give me an image of moving to Santa Fe next summer." I received 51uc. Before I go on, let me add that I did a reading a few days earlier on my birthday ("What can I do to make my next year on Earth a happy one?") and received 17uc, which contains the trigram for Thunder below the trigram for Lake, which I took to mean "go with the flow, don't force anything" (an interpretation I landed on after diving deep into the comments on the Exploring Divination page for 17uc), which feels right to me. Get my ducks in a row, trust in the unfolding nature of things. So I read 51uc as an extension of 17uc, or vice versa: there are a lot of obvious changes and disruptions on the horizon (a new baby, moving to a new city, potentially being "funemployed" and/or starting a new job), but all I can do now is, in a sense, prepare and wait for the right time to act.

But is there also the possibility that 51uc is a warning away from taking this risk -- is it saying, stay back lest ye invite catastrophe? Or might it simply be a reflection of my inner turbulence with respect to the upcoming changes and disruptions (which is what I gathered from the Exploring Divination thread for this hex)? My intuition tells me its closer to the latter than the former, and also that I should keep doing what I'm doing (getting my job app materials ready, contacting supporters, gathering intel, etc.) until clearer opportunities/information present themselves. After all, the Thunder is currently resting in the Lake, right?

Thanks in advance for your help! I appreciate all of you.

If 17 meant for you "don't force anything", then you shouldn't be taking drastic steps to relocate.
51 shows a natural shock, coming from an outer source. So if moving to Santa Fe is '51', I'd be wary.

Santa Fe. One of my favorite places! Hex. 51 - called by different people Thunder, The Arousing, Taking Action, and Quake:

Your plea is heard. Tremors come - “shock shock.” Laughter ... “ha-ha.”
The quake will alarm hundreds of villages, but not a ladle of sacrificial wine is spilled.

(based on trans. by S. Field)

Trigram (three-line figure) Zhen, Thunder, is associated with new beginnings, and Spring (the beginning of the Chinese New Year). As with all things new, they can be both shocking to us and joyful ... and here I think the Yi says to expect both - but that things will ultimately work out (your plea heard), and perhaps that your move - your new beginning - has a spiritual component (ladle of sacrificial wine).

You need to be willing to take some risks, and this move will certainly feel shocking at times (maybe uncomfortably so!). And this transition may feel like it's dragging on way longer than you'd like - so keep your eye on the prize - a new start, laughter and a ladle of wine!

PS - you probably know this, but there are a few near-by colleges: 2-3 junior colleges, the Institute of American Indian Arts, and of course Univ. of NM in Albuquerque - I've flown into the Sunport there enough times I've learned to spell it! (I Googled colleges near Santa Fe and found quite a few). And if you haven't already seen it, make sure to visit the Valles (rhymes with Baez I think) Caldera National Preserve outside of Las Alamos. If you've ever watched Longmire, it's where they filmed his house scenes.

I hope that's of some use to you.
Best, D

Thank you for your thoughtful reply, D, and for the pointers about colleges and sites in the area! I'm preparing some materials for St. John's, which is right in my wheelhouse, but I'll look into the others you mentioned, too. 🙏

Your take resonates with me quite a bit -- the embedded joy and spiritual growth and laughter in the shake up of a move to Santa Fe is what my heart and intuition are emphasizing, though I am not dismissing or downplaying the gravity of the risks and likely turbulence that would accrue to the move, either. It simply feels right, in spite of the shocks that will follow.

I think also that the move is so far off, and we are so early in the planning stage that the static nature of both readings seems to reflect precisely this prematurity for action. Other than writing cover letters, looking at the housing market, and connecting with people who can help us in whatever way, there is little else to actually do. (I guess that's kind of a lot haha.) This also comports with a reading about sending an email to a specific school in Santa Fe back in January (when we were first looking into moving), which yielded 13.2.4>9, implying to my mind that it was best to refrain from contacting them until I had my soil tilled, as it were: do more research, prepare materials, get my ducks in a row, which obviously resonates in some respects with my most recent readings.

I am glad it did. Feel free to message me via Clarify, if you want more ideas about thinks to do, and places to go and see in and around SF and NM (though I can't help you much more with the job search I'm afraid). D.

PS - Google Maps says the drive from LA to SF is about 12-14 hours, so maybe some road trips there - even for enjoyment and getting to know the area (with a stopover at the Grand Canyon?) - might be actual possibilities? Just sayin'.

Thanks, D! Very kind of you. We took a road trip last December and broke up the drive with a stay in Flagstaff, though next time we'll take our time and see the GC.
