Hello...much in keeping with my life these days, I got a hexagram with multiple, seemingly contradictory changing lines. It's Hex. 64 with changes at 3,4,5 and 6, resulting in Hex. 48.

I asked about a very difficult relationship situation so the complexity doesn't surprise me per se, I'm just confused at how to process these changes.

Any help is much appreciated.

The more active lines I draw in a hexagram, the less emphasis I put on each active line, and the more emphasis I put on the relating hexagram. So I'd read your results this way: the relationship you're enquiring about is in a 'not yet' situation - it's not time to move forward with it, it's not time to do something about it. Ironically, by not acting, you access some real depth now, either of insight or love.

Or try a transitional hexagram. In this case, it would be 64.3, 50.4, 18.5, 57.6>48. I learned about transitional hexagrams here on this site and find them an elegant and clear depiction of the pathway of the changes. You can easily go through the steps on LiSe Heyboer's wonderful site I Ching, Book of the Moon. Here's a link: http://www.anton-heyboer.org/i_ching/

All the best,

010101 [64]
001111 [ changing line at 3,4,5,6]
---------- XOR
011010 [48]

Here is my opinions on your reading:

(1) Yi advises you to follow the rules and norms of the social establishment [48].
In this light, the best option you have at this point of time is 001111[33] - retreat.

(2) IF you are trying to make a move to approach thing NOW, Yi is proposing you to pull back for a while. Wait until the right sign for a MOVE. NOW is NOT the time to act.

OK yes XORing any bit with 0 leaves that bit unchanged, XORing it with 1 changes it to it's opposite.

Why do you equate a changing line with 1 and an unchanging line with 0 ?

Why would you then create a "hexagram" out of this equation, XOR it with the original hexagram and come to any reasonable conclusion about doing that ?

It's very difficult to get a good sense of exactly what your message is without knowing what the question is. Often people try to interpret an answer generally when it wasn't received in response to a general, vague statement or question. The hexagram is a real answer, and so it's important to connect it with the real question. That does not mean that your answer actually was a direct answer, but it usually is a direct answer if this is the first time you've asked the question.

Anyway, focusing on the hexagrams instead of the lines because there are so many is a useful way to look at it, I agree with Dobro. In that case your present situation is refelcted in 64. It is not yet time to begin the new cycle. I don't know if 48 is an aspect of your question or if it reflects where you are heading in your present path toward the future, because I don't know what your question is.

64.3 (50) Your plans for change aren't ready to be carried out. There is work that must be completed first. Focus on finishing what you've started before moving to the next step.

50.4 (18) Your first task is to repair inner foundations that were spoiled by neglect and not living up to your responsibility. It is time to dedicate yourself completely to inner renewal and making yourself worthy.

18.5 (57) When you address what has been spoiled completely, then you find that your mind is changed, and positive ways of addressing problems are successful. Old ways of thinking that have caused pitfalls in the past are addressed with integrity, and finally solved through honest admission of fault. Success and praise for this effort.

57.6 (48) Here you are warned that the consequences of straying mentally from the source and center of your emotional world is loss. You are reminded that if the lessons are not learned, then you will lose something real and tangible. 57 is also about the mind, and taking care of what your intentions are.

Connecting this to your reading on 23>24 for your relationship- I have access to my notes today and can tell you this. The first line of 23 that began the process of disintegration (from the past break up) is associated with Feb. 1, 2006-March 10, 2006, and the final breakup with Aug. 8, 2006- Sept. 15, 2006.

If those dates in the past mean something to you, then focus on them, but if they don't then don't worry about it.

Thank you all for looking at this. Autumn, your comments in particular go to the heart of the situation. I'm amazed at how you can center on particular dates (serious novice here, remember); they don't mean anything in particular to me -- but I can make semi-informed speculations about what they could mean to the "estranged" person in this scenario -- whose estrangement came about more as a result of the practical context of our relationship rather than any discord between us. (I'm sure you can read between the lines, folks.)

A thought -- is it possible in this same way to know when the time to act in the future will come?

Thank you again, it is truly fascinating and deeply, deeply helpful.

Okay. I consulted again this morning on the same general question ("Please comment on my current situation", basically). Again, multiple changes. This time 48 with changes at 2,3,4,5 and 6, ending in 35.

It all rings true, of course. I will step through the stages when I have another break in my workday. It's blowing my mind -- I have never gotten this many changes in so short a period.

Remember, the intentions and questions are so important. The oracle doesn't talk to a third person offering a reading, it talks to you. You are by far the best interpreter. So, if doesn't ring true for you- then that means your question was not in line with my interpretation method.

I learned the dates method from a more seasoned interpreter on this board who has access to knowledge sources that I don't have access to. He is the only current person I am aware of on this board who uses them. They have always been highly accurate for me, so I trust the formula I was taught. However, they won't work if you aren't focused on asking for a diagnosis of the situation- and that's because (I think, anyway) you have to allow yourself to open up the question to whatever the oracle wants to say.

So, they should be timeframes that really impact you, if they don't, then this method didn't work for you.

You are just a lesson in interpretation methods, aren't you? :) When five lines change, focus on the fan yao of the stable line. 5.1 (48).

The rain has begun, and it will be falling for some time. Wait for it to stop on its own.
It has a purpose. It is filling the well.

And what a nice image 35 makes in the background. The sun rising over the hill.

autumn, more than happy to be your practice dummy. Does your comment about focusing on the fan yao of the stable line mean that transitional hexagrams don't really do the trick?

Thank you so much...I'll be familiarizing myself with fan yao -- and going umbrella shopping.

Autumn:

It would be great to learn how to use the formula for the dates. Would you be kind enough to explain or is there a link to the instructions?

Thanks,
