After getting my annual physical checkup, the doctor said that I have high blood pressure due to being overweight. I started dieting, and eventually moderate exercise 30 minutes 5 days a week when the weather gets warmer. The doctor prescribed some medication but I didn't take it. I asked, "What health changes can I expect in the next few months?" 51.4 Shock to 24 Returning. Maybe the next doctor visit in April, I see that my hypertension gets worse before coming back to normal.

I'd say the shock here, the jolt to your system was the news about your blood pressure. You acted on the advice but line 4 shows someone almost so stunned they get stuck. Instead of the shock reviving you perhaps you are danger of it freaking you out to the point where you don't feel you can act or you over react in a fear based way.

So don't allow the health news to throw you off balance just keep on keeping on, being sensible. You don't say what medication the Dr gave you that you decided not to take so I hope it's nothing important.

Trojina, the medication the doctor prescribed me were hypertension medication. My father told me not to take them as taking them will get me hooked for life.

Fanofenka, I'm going to step outside of a Yi response and just say, if your blood pressure is a only a bit elevated, then maybe, just maybe you might want to see what diet and exercise will do over a few months. But ... if it is even moderately elevated, you are just a stroke waiting to happen, and should take the darn medication! AND I feel that in this case, you should NOT rely on the Yi for medical advice!

A few years ago my chiropractor took my blood pressure (after it hadn't been done for many years) and wanted me to go to my doctor immediately, he was that concerned. What was interesting is that I was feeling fine, even a bit euphoric as a side affect of my high blood pressure, which made it seem even more remote that something bad would happen. But I am very glad that it's now under control.

I think too, that you should discuss with your doctor both what you might expect from diet and exercise and this notion that once you start taking blood pressure medication, you'll be hooked for life. I have never heard that, but I'm not an expert.

Best, David.

I agree with Freedda - even though I completely understand not wanting to end up drug-reliant and I would be tempted to do exactly the same. But if you are at risk of stroke, do for goodness sakes' take the medication.

I'm posting this because I'm concerned about 51.4. On the one hand, Trojina may very well be right - she usually is ;) - that this is referring to the shock you've already had, and this paradoxically making it harder to get moving. (The fact that you mention exercising eventually, when the weather's warmer matches that interpretation!) On the other hand, you did ask quite specifically about changes in the next few months, and for me 51.4 brings to mind worrying associations with blood clots.

David is right: Yi is not your best source of medical advice, and my speculation about what Yi might be referring to definitely isn't. I would suggest you ask the dr about not taking the pills while you see what difference you can make with changes to diet and exercise, and see what they say. They might be fine with the idea, in which case you would know you just need to get yourself moving.
