For awhile now I've come to the realization that my life pretty much seems to be going nowhere. Nothing seems to interest me anymore and I basically lack direction in life. So I decided to consult the I ching hoping it might give me insight into my predicament. My question was " How should I go about understanding my lack of direction in life?" The answer I got from the I ching was 49. Revolution with line 6 changing into 13. Fellowship with men. I'm a bit new to the I ching. I've done some research into the meaning of the hexagrams but i'm still baffled by the answer the I ching gave me. I still have trouble seeing how "revolution" and " fellowship with men" have to do with my lack of direction in life. I hope by coming to this forum that maybe some of you could help me understand the meanings of the hexagrams I received as an answer. Thanks in advance to all who will respond.

I'm kinda cofused by your question, holyman. At first I thought the I Ching was simply suggesting you revolutionize - change - (49) your friendships and the people you hang out with (13). But then re-reading your question, "How should I go about understanding my lack of direction?" I realize you weren't asking what to do about the situation to change it, but rather you were asking how to go about understanding it. In that case I think 49.6 is about taking care of details, perhaps suggesting you make a detailed analysis of the characteristics of your situation. Note any jobs that you have started that you need to bring to completion. It may be that until old obligations are fulfilled you aren't given the energy or insight as to where to go next.

Hello, Holyman...

I'll start with 13...Planting; Harvesting; Building...Are any of these something you
liked to do in the past or would like to do in the future? A great question to ask
yourself at a fork-in-the-road time in your life is: What did I love doing when I was
a kid? We quickly forget once we're "all grown up" how to just have fun and joy each
day in our lives. We just have to keep reminding ourselves to just be happy.
And 49 might be suggesting to simply let go of feeling like you lack direction or
purpose. That, in itself, may just be "the revolution" you need right now. So, give
it a shot! All The Best... We're Always Here For You!!

My sense is you have made changes in your life on some level yet you still perhaps pay lip service to the old ways of doing things - perhaps the way your community, friends colleagues expect you to behave ? This might give a sense of lack of direction as your outer life is a little out of synch with your inner changes. Your old life maybe no longer satisfies yet in some ways you still expect to go along in the same way.

I see this reading perhaps as you need to really shed your skin don't try to carry on like you were before. Karcher says don't simply put on another mask, to move with the changes.

Just another perspective :)

Yes, I love what all have said so far.

Even though the feeling you have is one of NON-movement, your reading suggests that you are undergoing a period of consolidating new energies. Like Trojan implies, the transformation inside has taken place, and the old no longer works for you. It can feel a bit like being in "limbo" until the changes consolidate and begin to produce tangible manifestations. Relationship dynamics can be one of the first places you start to notice the newness.

I have a friend whose husband recently broke down and actually started crying. After years of being a steady, but uncommunicative and "laid-back" partner, he suddenly felt he couldnt go without "the intimacy he needs to feel in relationship". which shocked my friend because she had (sadly and for a long time) assumed he didnt require much closeness. Apparently, he had been undergoing a silent transformation and his life and relationship "suddenly" felt so empty and barren. They are in the process of re-working their relationship.
Inner change needs to find its new way to interact and communicate, and life may feel stale until you act on the changes.
All the best to you!

Hex 49.6 you should examine your own approach and attitude to life, because it is down to you to find the solution to your problem, it would appear that you must dig down deep to find out what is wrong. Once you have got to grips with the problem then the changes that you need will take place but in the beginning you must be satisfied with small and obtainable goals which will stabilize your life. then the building can commence.

Hex 13 once you have found your answer then it will be time for you to get out there and join in with others in the spirit of cooperation and to be free from self interest, a time to open up and trust others, so that they will trust you in return. So be determined , communicate and you will succeed in finding a path in life.

the base trigram of fire is associated with guidance and its doubling, the hexagram of fire, 30, covers guidance doubled and so direction setting, an ideology.
Hex 13 covers guidance in the form of associating with like minded but in a playful, competitive, form. In the set of hexagrams that form the fire octet, 13 is 'opposite' to 36 where the focus is on hiding one's light since there are no 'like minded' around!

Hex 49 covers guidance in the form of revelation, seeing behind a mask/skin/facade. In the set of hexagrams forming the fire octet, 49 is 'opposite' 22 where the focus is on hiding behind a facade.

The fire octet is in order :

36, 22, 63, 37, 55, 30, 49, 13.

Emotionally, the trigram of fire is associated with issues of acceptance - being 'one of the gang' etc (and so extended into an ideology for it is an ideology that can give direction).

13 is included in 49.6 in this way: there are two different people imaged in the line - one changes superficially, the other changes significantly. It's a fellowship of two people in this case. Two people, but they're both aspects of yourself. 49.6 is about two forces at work simultaneously - a sort of inner conflict, I guess, if you like dramatic representations. One part of you wants to change and might actually be working toward it; the other part just gives lip service to change because deep down, it likes things the way they are.

In the last couple of years, I've come to believe that 49.6 contains the idea of Fellowship in one other way: if you want to throw your weight behind the person in you that's sincere about changing, then find yourself a group of people with a guide or leader who knows something about love and who therefore can be trusted. This often isn't easy to find, but if you really yearn for it, you'll find it. It's almost impossible to change on your own.

welcome holyman. hexagram and line images are very rich, good luck with your i ching studies. there are a lot of words and images to peel through till you meet the image that clicks. sometimes it's just a line.

regarding your lack of direction in life, I also wonder that you feel, or, are just blending in, with the general crowd. Understanding your lack of direction may mean that direction, or change, has involved some kind of survival skill on your part. 'Dont stand out too much'. 'blend in'. 'camoflauge'.

maybe you could examine what really means life to you.

Holyman,

You didn’t state your age and that would figure prominently into my answer. Makes a big difference if you are 21 or 59 and putting this question to the oracle. If you were age 29 or 58 your situation would be understandable somewhat since these are the Saturn Return years and are critical points in ones life. So I am replying somewhat in the dark, not knowing your age.

Hexagram 49 is one of making bold and sweeping changes. The character for this hexagram meant an animal’s pelt which is changed in the course of the year by molting. Seems it is time for some ‘molting’ of your own and you have picked up on this by your sense of lack which prompted you to consult the oracle. Seems to me the oracle is telling you it is time to turn things around and perhaps with a goal of some sort of work in the social order (hexagram 13). Yet the top line changing counsels to remaining persevering (I use the Wilhelm Bayne’s translation) In other words I think we need to proceed with baby steps. Be satisfied with the attainable. Maybe some sort of time line or search for opportunities to focus upon. Maybe just the firm resolve to commit to a revolution in ones, thus far, directionless life. No question that change is needed. You just need to be circumspect about going about it.

Best regards,

KgW

Excellent thread, imo. KgW, I like what you say about age cycles, in regard to this particular question. Let me throw just another horseshoe at the stake.

13 can be thought of outside of just human affairs. It is relatedness to everything. I once asked the Yi, why it cares to give answers, and received 13 – relatedness. Even seemingly alone on a desert island, there is big 13 with the sky, sand, sea, vegetation, pigs and fishes.. all of it.

If 13 is seen as the landscape, then you are going through a shift in the way you relate to virtually everything. It is your world view which is molting. Though you probably don’t yet notice the change in you and your world view, it has been gradually changing. Molting takes awhile, but one day soon you may look in the mirror and see someone new.

Man, you guys are good! I just turned thirty, and a couple of people around says it's "normal" what i'm going through. That's all nice but it ain't any fun. But I found some food for thought in your replies and I much appreciated it. I know understand the revolution hexagram a bit better, although i'm still trying to see how the other one ties in to all this.

Holyman,

The Saturn Return refers to when the planet Saturn returns to the placement it occupied in your birth chart. It's revolution around the chart is approximately 29-1/2 years. The effects in a person's life usually have a window of about two years either side of the actual year of the return. Kinda of like seeing the effects of Spring before the actual date. This is due basically to the planet going retrograde. Right now I am going through the second Saturn Return and have different issues than one who is going through it at 29/30. You might ask the oracle how to best relate to this critical period in your life. Normally the first Saturn return revolves around career issues and relationship/marriage issues. Many will change jobs/spouses at this time. It was a horror for me. Worse than turning forty!

Best regards and keep us posted.

KgW
