Hi, all:
H39 has always annoyed me.
I am asking about whether or not it is advantageous for me to continue effort with a certain project, or if I ought to limit my contributions and diminish my role as best I can.
I received 39.4 > 31.

I have always been puzzled about all this "the southwest furthers, the northeast does not further; going leads to trouble, so he remains stationary", etc.

I take it to mean that being modest and minimalist rather than aggressive and extravagant will be best. So yes, stay in, but reduce and limit a lot of the details.

any other insights would be welcome as always.:bows:

From Legge:

The present is embodied in Hexagram 39 - Chien (Obstruction): Advantage will be found in the southwest, and the contrary in the northeast. It will be advantageous to meet with the great man. With firmness and correctness, there will be good fortune.

The fourth line, divided, shows its subject advancing, but only to greater difficulties. He remains stationary, and unites with the subject of the line above.

The Emotional I Ching says that in hex 39, the obstruction is from within. Bypass, but not forgo action altogether. But of line 4 he says, "Concentration is preferred over movement. Again, I suppose limiting to quality over quantity....

*** extremely odd, too, that the one site (my browser is screwed up so cannot glean a name from it) calls Hexagram 39 "Cold Feet", which is what I have now regarding this project!!!
:rofl::rofl:

One of the names I have to understand 39 is 'dead end', which gives a very clear image of what it presents: once there you need to go back and find a different way out. With line 4 I'd ask myself whether I blocked out the influence that came from a different place, cause that might prove important. Biggest trouble with 39 is one's inner stuck attitude that needs re-wiring - look at 31.4, the fan yao for a different aspect: there one sticks only to what one already knows/understands, and blocks the way to anything other

Hey Foxx777.

I've often found these two hex lend themselves well to a fairly simplistic interpretation.

So you have obstacles (39) and intuition (31).

What's would be the most intuitive thing to do to overcome obstacles?

Line 39.4=get help

It seems indeed a situation where there are various difficulties to overcome, but if you intuitively feel the project could work (31) then you can stick with it, provided you don't try and do it on your own but ask for assistance (39.4, possibly even from a 'male' subject, if we're prepared to take the line's advice literally, as it 'rides' on another masculine line).

I agree the fan yao can give you a great deal of insight here as well.

I see 31.4 as an auspicious situation where one worries too much about possible obstacles that are primarily fear -based and most likely could be overcome (but not without hard work).

Also my personal experience of this line has been the sort of rational conflict which causes one to mistrust something or someone, the mind going back and forth trying to figure out pros and cons which only serves to confuse you more. I think listening to your intuition rather than 'thought' could be what's required.

i dont think you'd have got this sort of result if the iching's advice was to get out of it altogether, so dont give up entirely.
