Hello All

Here's a new book I just discovered (and bought): The Laws of Change - I Ching and the Philosophy of Life (2002) by Jack Balkin. Balkin, a professor of constitutional law at Yale, has written a lucid, highly accessible (i.e., un-legalistic), practical interpretation combining the traditional text with down-to-earth counsel. The author's purpose is "to explain the ethical teachings...not simply (in terms of) right and wrong but basic issues about how one should live and give purpose to one's life." I think he succeeds. His line-by-line interpretations are reminiscent of, in some cases nearly identical to, those of Sara Dening - to whom he gives high credit for many insights.

And Clarity gets a mention in footnote 14 on page 67!!

There's an excellent Bibliographical Essay at the end, summarizing (in only a sentence or two, in most cases) the available literature - he's read 'em all, it seems.

I've only skimmed it so far and have asked only one question using this text as a source, but am impressed with its consistency with other respected interpretations and with the depth of the author's research. This has already won a place at the top tier of my must-consult bookpile.

Yes, it's available on Amazon.com, but do yourself and free enterprise a favor and pay a visit to your local independent bookseller - on any shore of any sea. (Mine is The Tattered Cover, the world's best bookstore!) Treat yourself to a cup of designer coffee, find an easy chair, and take a test read. Then pull out the plastic and take The Laws of Change home. You'll be glad you did.

(And no, I have no connection whatsoever with the author or publisher.)

Jill
