Balakrishnan Iyer, may his business flourish, has given us a new online I Ching reading. I'm not usually enthusiastic about Flash programs, but I think this one is lovely. Please try it out - and tell us what you think of it.

Thanks!

Wow!! This is really, really nice. Balakrishnan Iyer did a fantastic job with the design, and of course Hilary is as always an inimitable wordsmith. I love the bowl-of-marbles concept! I spent about 20 minutes just playing with it. Navigation was intuitive and fun. Who cares about the readings, when the animation is so slick! Don't miss it -- guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Very impressed,
Lindsay

Cool, and perfect timing too.

yesterday I was asked to take on extra responsibility at work. Not sure how this would affect my current work load - and more importantly the direction my career is flowing in. This morning in my inbox is a message telling me of this new online flash - or perhaps more imortantly reminding me that the I Ching can help. Anyway, I got 2 - the Receptive. A timely reminder that if i try and dictate too much life will get clogged, but if i follow whats happening it will flow ok, and the last line suggests there will be good benefits resulting.

I would like some help on the significance/meaning of freinds in the north, east, south, west. Can anyone shed some light in the significance please?

cheers

Binz

Hello Binz,

Thank you for posting - I'm glad to hear about the timing

About the compass directions - I think you'll get a better response on that in the general divination section. So I've started off a page on the subject there: Compass Directions

Lindsay (and everyone), you might be amused to hear about my first divination with this program online. 9 changing to 42. Well, I knew I had a customer I ought to be getting back to, but what could that third line be about? Then I clicked the 'help with your reading' button and found a broken link. One frantic email to Balakrishnan and he put the cart back together again.

Beautiful, fun, great, exactly what I needed after an exhausting (but nice) day. I can hardly keep my eyes open, and then this program tells me the sun is shining over the earth, and I will meet with people (35 changing to 31). My question? About Clarity.

Did I mention my test drive of the Flash I Ching?

When I first uploaded it, the link from the reading to the help page was broken. My first reading on the newly-uploaded program included Hexagram 9, line 3.

Memo to self: react calmly and with consideration if I find any broken spokes. hee hee. The one issue I've had so far was that when I inadvertantly backed up one page too far (from the bowl back to the cover page), it seemed to erase my reading - when I went forward again, it gave me a new bowl, not my already completed reading.

Otherwise, it's great. When you have the image right there in front of you of the relative probabilities of the lines, the actual appearance of each particular line acquires that emphatic "rightness" that coming to the last stalk or the landing of the third coin brings. Something the old program didn't have.

Hi Guys!!
New here. I find the Flash wonderfully peaceful and insightful. Easy to use. Very powerful!
I think I will use it on a day to day basis for daily discoveries and matters at hand.

Hello Lynxie, pleased to meet you! I'll forward your comments to Balakrishnan (the nice, seriously inspired man who actually wrote the software).

I think he has a version in the pipeline that allows you to 'cache' a few readings at once so you don't lose the current one if you click back too far. Just keep watching this space...

...Even better, please could you tell me (and through me, Balakrishnan) what you think of this cache idea?

Basically the program would store three readings at once. There'd be three extra buttons added to access each of the stored readings - but they'd be lost once you quit the program. (Unless he uses cookies, in which case they could be stored for future visits.) The first reading would also be overwritten if you did a fourth one.

So, to cache or not to cache? Please help out by telling us what you would prefer!

The only sort of cache I'd like to see is one that would provide a little bit of hedge against inadvertant-click errors. Saving the most recent three readings during the life of the session would be enough for me.

I haven't actually lost anything since I learned the limitations of the program, so it seems to me that the primary user to have in mind when making improvements should be the "new user." (A clear little note of features/limits would be nice at the end of the Instructions page.)

As far as cookies, they don't seem necessary to me, since I will write down the results right away, and my ongoing relationship with the reading is through my written notes. But, thinking of the new user again, I can see someone wanting to go back and look at the actual results screen at a later date, especially with a first reading that is also an important reading that they are struggling with. Another reason for cookies might be that the user wants to go off and look at other online commentaries, and somehow in their web-journey they close the window/session.

I really enjoy the graphics of the program, the murky light, the fading and return of the bowl. Thanks for all the hard work and care!

I tried the online oracle. I clicked the same marble six times to see what happens. I got yins and yangs and one changing line. It works, in other words.

I love the way "get help with your reading" directs you here when you click on it lol.
