Hi
I thought my first question here might also solve an immediate problem... so I cast for an appropriate name for this forum, but maybe it posed more of a question of me... I'm hoping it didn't just lead me well past modesty and straight into hubris... I hope it is OK to adopt two trigrams for my name here or hopefully maybe let them adopt me, so am directed to learn more about hexagram 14 with no changing lines... Da you...

I have much to learn because I went ahead and fell right in :bows:

I look forward to the sharing and learning

best wishes
graham now humbly aka Li Chien... Ooops.

If it is OK I am going to work through this question over some posts as having only worked with the yi for about 18 months and my learning has been largely self taught. My background is in astrology and so some of the practices I have learnt in horary and event interpretation inform the way I approach this.

As a newbie I would deeply appreciate any feedback about how I am interpreting the hex.

So here it goes... Initial thoughts...

Is the answer a fit for the question and are the significators valid for the querent.

I assume the question will be answered in a way the querent may understand it and so given my astrological background that will be part of the framework that will also inform my interpretation of it.

Originally I was going to use A Son of Tao as my username as it relates to my approach in using traditional wisdom to teach landscape design from both an Eastern as well as a contemporary perspective and also in teaching sustainability (change management) and I have always liked the way son and sun sound the same.

My focus this year with my students has been about looking at hex 1 and hex 2 and exploring how creation and manifestation is the basic connective tissue of their process as landscape designers. We have also been looking at traditional Chinese and Japanese landscape design and so have explored Taoism, Confucianism, Shintoism and Buddhism to understand the underlying concepts informing Eastern processes.

The clinging strikes me as a personal kind of fire, that it needs something to burn on and that heaven for me is a light that shines eternally of itself.

Also that as the Heaven ascends it will purify the fire and the descending fire will be charged anew by it's contact with Heaven.

The fire is more representative of personal journeys and is aiming to manifest. The experience of the universal on the way towards manifestation is to also give a reflection of the need at times to be individual and also know self beyond the limits of an ego.

That in some ways the fire is more like heliocentric person centred astrology and that heaven is more closely aligned to fixed star traditions and the impersonal.

The fire is like the day and the one sun, heaven is like the evening sky and the many suns. The one sun must be temporarily extinguished so that we can at times view the many... but as night follows day we must then come back into ego to experience ourselves as this is a function of manifestation.

For an astrologer who has spent as much time with traditional fixed star approaches as he has with person centred astrology this hex 14 seems like a strong fit. The fact that it has no changing lines suggests an ongoing dialogue with the relationship between the elements within the hexagram as being a fundamental symbol of this path.

As far as great possession goes the native is as much possessed by the way as he in any way in possession of it... that the fire is his enthusiasm and that contact with heaven is the spark that renews that enthusiasm.

The native also has a yod that dominates his chart which is sometimes referred to as the finger of g.d or heaven and the focus point is a conjunction Sun Uranus on the ascendant, i am interpreting li as relating to the Sun and Heaven as Uranus ( as the archetypal universal sky god) and also that the lower character in da you is a hand which connects with the finger. The use of hand and finger as fate and direction are indicative of his pathway.

So why li chien and not da you.

I went with my instincts on this. I have worked with Feng Shui sporadically for 14 years and have a better understanding of the trigrams than I do of the individual lines that come together to form the hexagrams so I use the language I am most comfortable with, I hope to change this.

Because my understanding is young I have to start with the big blocks but also since creation explodes things I am now needing to go to the more fundamental approach of exploring the 64 hexagrams to get a better understanding of how change works. Hex 14 seems not far removed from the initiation of chaos of creation, just one move from hex 1 by having a dragon in the heavens leads us to a fire shining brightly in heaven and the great possession. This is the chaos of a birth in Heaven, the nature of Uranus and the Fool from the major arcana.

The casting of this hex at the start of a new more focused journey into one of the great disciplines for understanding the framework of everything seems a good fit, an auspicious start and like any quest an omen full of potentials and pitfalls... That this forum would prove a great asset to my learning, that the question that possesses me can also be my greatest possession is something I need to understand and the yi is letting me know this. And more than anything teach me how much I have to learn. If I can learn the sequence of the action of fire moving through heaven I can initiate a new phase and renew and transform my journey. This seems a most helpful gift and will become a great possession.

I was going to do a line about enough about me, so what about da you... I apologize for the comedy in advance and hope the great possession that is the collective light of the tribe will throw some more understanding on how best to interpret this hexagram as an omen for my time ahead within the Tao.

Best wishes for the season
Graham

Have you thrown the coins at all to ask Yi the question? I mean, the hex 14 did not come from Yi, it came from your own rich experiences in related disciplines and thought processes. Wouldn't it be interesting to know what Yi thinks of your new name?

Hi Ginnie,

Many thanks for responding :) yes, I cast the coins on the site here and that was the hexagram that I received when I put the question to the Yi, I hope I'm doing it right... The question I asked was what would be an appropriate username for me for the forum.

I then left it for a day while I thought about the hex 14 no moving lines answer and got it down to either da you or li chien, the latter seemed most right when i came back to create my account and my new name.

I checked back at my log of answers for the last year and a half and the only times I have cast hex 14 (11 times) I have only had it without moving lines once.

Also I have been wondering if the no moving lines adds a quality of fate so that my capacity to work with it is limited or if it acts a bit like the asteroid Chiron in astrology that it is something that is an inherent issue that cannot be modified but only experienced and learnt from.

Last night I cast the Yi for the first time since asking this question here (for a totally unrelated topic) and again received an answer hex14 (changing to 56) and am taking that one as Yi sending a bit of additional confirmation... Either that or I'm on a roll and should be heading for Las Vegas.

Btw the notes that I looked at first on hex 14 by Carol K Anthony start with "A fire in Heaven shines far - the inner freedom that comes from clarity, detachment and inner strength" so if the question was about a username for Clarity then ill add that to the yes vote. Life is a funny thing:rolleyes:

Also from people's experience with the Yi does the experience of a hexagram tend to also play out in archetypal myths. I know when you resonate with certain fixed stars and planets you often find your life story caught up in the underlying myth... Say if you have strong Virgo Pluto it is easy to find yourself living out the story of the abduction of Persephone into the underworld by Hades and your experience of that myth then tends to act out in the stages of a life cycle within the story... so in your adolescence you experience the early phase like Persephone as the innocent maiden and as you work through the myth grow towards becoming the fertile, whole and mature earthy womanhood that is Persephone as Queen of the Underworld. in the Icarus Daedulus myth as an adolescent you might play out life as risk taking Daedulus and then later mature becoming Icarus and more secure in your own abilities and boundaries.

So with a hexagram can lines from 1 to 6 form up as chapters of a myth to be experienced throughout life in your experience of that hexagram... could a myth like Icarus and Daedulus play out in hex 14... The hex 14 answer would make sense as the Icarus myth is one that tends to play out in my life though Im steering ckear of flying too close to the Sun these days.

When a myth is present in your life it appears regularly in your experience acting more like an underlying type rather than just a transiting experience.

Hope it's OK to throw these laterals out there to you. As usual as a newb I have way more questions than answers and I'm sure its like listening to some kid learning to play drums for those who have travelled a long way down this path already :)

Wow yes I have Pluto bang on my ascendent in Virgo and have been thinking of how that myth plays out.

I had never really linked it to readings until I began doing the mastermind group in Reading Circle and some recurrent readings/experiences reminded me of that myth although on the whole I know very little of mythology and tend to keep ideas about Yi within Yi terms...so to speak

I think you may get more in depth responses if you posted these kinds of thoughts in the Exploring Divination section. All the more reflective stuff about how we use Yi tends to get more discussed there while this section tends to be just for people wanting immediate help with questions.

Nothing wrong with having it here if you like but I imagine ideas about Yi and myth would probably get more input in Exploring Divination. I know there's a few people here who know alot about myth. Rodaki for example.

Hi Trojan,

I also have the same... Pluto in Vi within 3 degrees of asc... Makes relationships a challenge :) and they never see you coming either.

Thanks for your thoughts and the guidance on the other sections, am going to have to explore some more, but for now pre Christmas = chaos.

I am conscious of not going too far out of the square while on my training wheels, but I've already picked up some fantastic ideas and think this is a great space to learn in.

I have Pluto on my Moon in Virgo. Also, in the synastry chart with my husband, his Pluto is also on my Moon in Virgo. Having two Plutos on my Moon -- if that's a good way of expressing it -- means that the Persephone myth really resonates with me. Thanks for mentioning it. That's one thing I really like about this forum. It's open in that way to many insights and revelations ...

Hi Ginnie, much Depth and Intensity... but even more there can be a feeling we have been abducted in some way by the relationship... And that rich need for total fidelity to the other and to ourselves... The marriage of Persephone and Hades is one of the great marriages of true equality because Hades recognizes that he can't rule the underworld without the Queen as whole partner as the underworld has traditionally always been a dominion of the feminine (see Inanna) ... Now I'd better get back to the Yi as I am way too easily (and happily) drawn into my astro comfort zone :)
