Hi All,

Hot on the heels of our shiny new look come some changes to subscriptions. If you joined recently, or if you recently visited the members' area and happened on 'Subscriptions Central', you'll already know about 'Friends' Notes'. This is (or rather will be) a twice-monthly short-ish email from me with
  • ICC links/ news
  • links to blog posts
  • any other I Ching news I come across
This replaces (and expands on) the 'Answers' newsletter, which has been a collection of blog links for a while now. But unlike 'Answers', it's only for members.

How you get it

First, you won't start receiving this by default. You can sign up for it on the subscriptions page, or alternatively you can wait and watch your inbox for news. I'll be sending out one email to everyone - 'Answers' subscribers and Friends together - to explain the changeover. And shortly after that, all Friends (at least all who'd joined by today, when I exported the list  ) will get an email with a confirmation link to click if you'd like to get 'Notes'.

Not-very-important technical details:

In the course of all this, I'm changing over from running the lists from Clarity's server to running them from Aweber, which is a big autoresponder company that's actually some good at getting email delivered nowadays. (I'm not.) This won't make much difference to you, except you'll see links beginning with www.aweber.com instead of onlineClarity. Aweber are super-strict about importing subscribers, which is why you either need to sign up yourself, or else click the confirmation link. I can't send you any emails from there until Aweber knows you've given me permission.

Duplication...

...may happen somewhat. If you have several accounts here, you'll get an email to each of them about this. And unless Aweber does something very sophisticated, you may still receive that confirmation email even if you've already subscribed. Apologies in advance for any email that becomes a nuisance. This is a one-off thing; you won't get duplicates of the actual newsletter (unless you're so keen you ask for them, of course).

Summing up

I've written far too much. What else is new?

There's nothing you really need to do about this at this stage. Keep half an eye on your inbox, and presently (probably Wednesday or Thursday) you'll see the official missive with the subject line, "Please verify your subscription to clarityfriends". That's the one with the confirmation link to click if you'd like the Notes.

Any questions?

Hi Hilary,

I was wondering whether there was a way to change the email address that my subscriptions go to? Or do I just delete my subscription from 1 and re-subcribe under the other?

Whatever you like, really. Since you're a member here, you'll get a 'Please verify your subscription...' email (probably/hopefully) tomorrow. You could click the link in that to sign up with the same address it comes to, and then hit the 'change subscriber options' link on the first email to change it over. Or you could ignore the email, go to 'subscriptions central' and sign up there under a new address.

None of this will affect the email address your forum subscriptions go to. You'd need to edit that in your user profile here.

Explanatory email goes out late tonight (I forgot to send it last night, which after spending half the day preparing is just very weird); the 'please verify...' email tomorrow or Thurs.

I'm sorry the 'please verify...' email didn't arrive today as promised. I submitted the list to Aweber, and the email should have been sent straight away. But they say some of the email addresses are undeliverable (though how they know that when they refuse to send emails to any of them, I don't know...), and so none of them can be imported. (And no, they don't tell me which addresses they object to.)

I've sent a support ticket, and live in hope that we'll still get this done within the next day or so. Sorry for the delay.

Update...

Assuming you'd like to receive Friends' Notes, of course...

If you received a 'Please verify subscription...' email
- then please open it and click the 'confirm' link

If you didn't
- sorry, that would be because you've been a member for longer, and Aweber rejected the older list. Grmph. However, you can still sign up via the subscriptions page.

If you're not sure whether to bother...
...
there are prizes! Yes, the authentic one-and-only I Ching sweepstakes, or something. One copy of the correspondence course complete with correspondence, and ten £20 coupons.

And all this extraordinary excitement is only for people who subscribe to the new newsletter by October 1st. This means you get embarrassingly good odds of winning: as I write this, there are all of 285 subscribers. So much less tacky than the Lottery, too.
